The spicy seafood soup looks interesting and unique, I definitely would love to try the soup when I visit Sri Lanka. This traditional soup from Jaffna was not featured in the Sri Lankan series of the food review channels that I watched previously and I only get to know about this soup from your travel vlog instead. Thanks for sharing this unique soup, I think I will have some problem handling with the soup and should opt for the mild version when I try it since Hachara too have some problem. 🤣

@@pointblank1402 For your info, the 2 food review channels that I watched previously were produced by foreign youtubers, one is from US while the other is from Canada. One of the channels actually featured Jaffna as part of the Sri Lanka tour but featured mainly the more common South Indian food and therefore did not review the spicy soup that Ken tried in this video. The other food review channel did not cover Northern Sri Lanka, focussing mainly on central Sri Lanka during the trip.

Oh wow, that was a great experience trying odiyal kool, a traditional spicy seafood soup. Good that your tolerance towards seafood is up the next level. As for spiciness, you have made the right choice, trying a very mild one as your stomach couldn't handle it. Cassava is a tuber, is also known as tapioca and l remember you tried the cassava chips in one of your videos. Oh man, the ice cream looked super yummy and there was indeed a big crowd in the shop. I was there in jaffna in april. Had the home made super spicy Odiyal kool. Rare stuff. Delicious. Our seafood shopping was almost over 10000Rs.😀

Jaffna has lots of types of Kool. The hottest food I've ever had in my life was crab Kool in Jaffna. I have an extremely high tolerance for chilies, but even so, it made me sweat, weep copiously, snot ran from my nose, I was panting and my mouth went numb. Yet at the same time, the endorphins kicked in and I felt light-headed and glowing. I did eat the entire bowl, although it took about half an hour to finish. About half an hour later... It was a unique experience.

It's actually average tasting. Since there are no good Ice cream over there places they are standing out. Also tremendous heat in north makes anything cold taste better

Ken, fabulous video. From the comments it's evident all your videos must be impressive. In addition to Jaffna kool there are many other culinary delights unique to Jaffna. Milk hoppers (coconut milk pancake), different types of Pittu etc. Some will argue that they are found elsewhere. But I can assure you non can beat the taste Jaffna offers. Wonder if it has anything to do with the water they use. I reckon you don't miss this opportunity to taste these signature Jaffna food items. I am sure you'll enjoy them. In future you may not find the real traditional and authentic versions. Enjoy your stay in Jaffna.

It's not a porridge. It's a sea food stew. Traditionally made in Jaffna. Palmyrah root is dried then powered and used as a base as well as the thickening agent

Nice vlog Ken. That dish looked awesome. I don't mind a bit of spice having eaten Level 5 Pad Kaprow cooked by my wife. All you have to do is make sure you've got a plentiful supply of milk handy and it neutralises the 'pain' as I like to call it :)

Odiyal kool has to be slightly spicy otherwise it will not taste nice. You do not have to eat a lot just a liitle will do but most important has to be slightly spicy.
