I quit smoking after 20+ years when I got diagnosed with cancer, and realized that smoking on my way to chemo was just insane. I started when I was 11, and never thought I could quit. It's been 16 years. Yay 🥳

It will be 20 years January 1, 2022. I was 2-3 packs a day in the end. I considered it "An Act of Grace" that allowed me to quit. And that's exactly how it felt.

Could not be more timely! I just yesterday did something I never do either, I asked my higher powers to help me quit smoking. This feels like a personal message. Thank you so much for your bravery in sharing this, I am inspired on multiple levels ☺️

happy you found a way to overcome this addiction. .growing up as a city kid in the 1960s it wasn't unusual for a 9 year old to pick up this habit. Soon a two pack a day addiction for 27 years was taking a toll on my health. A diagnosis of cancer didn't phase me as a young father. getting released from hospital stays from radiation sickness couldn't get me to stop. I would tell family i would stop smoking 20 minutes after being cremated. I smoked my last cigarette on June 8th 1998 when my then 6 year old son confronted me and expressed his fear that i would die and leave him without a dad. I still consider myself a smoker. Ive just gone a long time between cigarettes. What works for me regarding addiction is to take one day at a time. I will never be able to say I've quit . I just make the decision that i am continuing to be in the process of quitting. It has worked every day since june 8th, 1998

I quit smoking cold turkey after fifteen years when I decided to have a family. (I loved smoking. I still miss it.) My addiction is poor eating and binge eating. I remember the moment I made eating my slow suicide -- "I don't even care if I die," I thought, twenty-one years ago when a major family loss happened and I started self-soothing with awful food choices. I believe in prayer and I believe healing is there for me, if I can accept it. I am so very tired. Thank you for sharing your story. xoxo

They say that's the hardest addiction to overcome. Good for you, however you found help. Now you're healthy, free and "not bound," you're in control, rather than controlled by some habit.

Need prayers from those who pray. I picked up cigarettes again this year during a super hard life change. I tried to hide it as well, which realizing that I felt ashamed, I knew I HAD to stop. It definitely helps re-regulate, but it's not worth it in the long run.

The problem is, my family used religion to abuse and traumatize me. Having a therapist suggest prayer to address any problem is SUPER triggering.

As hard as I tried... nothing I could do could have stopped me from smoking. 37 years. Then one day while trying to convince my mother that I am an adult who is separate from her, it hit me.

I had a miracle like you with giving up smoking. I literally felt the weight lift off my shoulders and walked out never wanting another cigarette again. And I was a solid smoker like yourself. Thank God for this miracle!!!

Thanks for sharing your story. I resonate so deeply with this. I've smoked (on and off) for 15 years now. It's so embarrassing and shameful, I hate the way it smells, how it stops me breathing properly, and the cost. But I understand now that it's been a way to try and regulate my emotions. I haven't smoked for 2 weeks and I'm hoping it'll be permanent this time.

Alan Carr's book on quitting smoking really worked for my family. I was extremely skeptical that reading a book could make a difference but it did. 👍

I resonate with so many aspects of your story Anna. I used to smoke for exactly the same reasons as you. Also I quit (heavy) smoking in a day 11 years ago because I had a spiritual awakening that probably saved my life. Thank you for being always so open and honest. You are modelling how to release those hidden pockets of shame and guilt that are so heavy and disempowering in the healing process.
