This is something different to usual channel content but wanted to show a behind the scenes look at elections. Cobbled it all together in limited time and hope it's, at least, watchable. Really enjoyed this! We often see counts through cameras of the journalists, but not through their eyes, and thats the different perspective you gave. Also, watching this, I have no idea who you may have voted for, which is a great sign and fundamental to a great journalistic communicator. This is the first of your videos i have seen, but looking forward to seeing more

Thank you! The important thing about reporting, especially on a local level, is to be balanced and neutral. Let the viewer/reader make up their own mind. I've always strived to do that in my work unless there's been a hedious incident that you can't be neutral on.

Just FYI the candidates are given the result and know the vote figures before they come onto stage, they are given them privately and have to either accept them or request a recount (only done when it’s a narrow result)

Good explanation. Tbf I should have done a bit of narration to explain that but my microphone wasn't working!! Was up against it for the edit so just did the text overlay. You can usually tell from afar if a candidate is kicking off about the result. We had that with Chris Loder and how the ballot papers were stacked.

I was a candidate in the election, and have been a candidate in many local elections before. Just an fyi, we are told who has won before we go on the stage. There is no shock finding out we have lost because we found out about 10 mins before. That is how the "shock" winner always has a speech ready to go etc

Its usually much longer than ten minutes. Often an hour or two.. just saying

We could tell who had won from afar. For instance, Lloyd's body language after being presented the provisional results and towards his supporters told me enough that he won. I ended up calling the result to ITN shortly after. How did you do in the election?

In my area I was with a couple of candidates before they went to the counts. They had been specifically told to stay away until near the end (I guess to avoid the media watching their faces for clues). One of them didn’t think he’d win but when he saw the Sky TV constituency prediction was saying he had a good chance he sat and wrote a speech in case he did.

Fascinating.... Just to contrast in Australia... When we count our votes it is done at each polling booth after the booth closes. We did not have a central polling location, except for the national tally room, which is usually based in Canberra... Yes - the former plantation in Barbados is expected to be bought by Barbados Government www.theguardian.com/world/2024/apr/20/tory-mp-from-slave-owning-family-set-to-gain-3m-from-sale-of-former-plantation
