Somebody else already commented this, but I'll second it: Yes, we'd love to see another video in this style, but I'd love to see Eldar or another faction that has more rounded edges. Space marines and Tau tend to have a lot of hard edges and angles which lend themselves to this style, so seeing it on more rounded, less aggressive surfaces would be fantastic

Eldar or Tyranid, too many Space Marines etc all over the place Would be even more fun if it was "beyond box art" by using their techniques but maybe using a more interesting color scheme, free hand a bit or effects. An Ulthwe warlock with a robe that looks like it reflect deep space with galaxies etc or a Wraithguard with with effects on the head and stones looking like hidden souls :)

As a graphic designer who works in print, I feel like I can shed some light on the 'whole colours don't match the box art' thing.... 2 Main reasons the printed art doesn't match the paints they said they used: 1- The graphic designer who edited the photo of the mini bumped up the saturation and contrast when preparing the photo to be placed into the print material (making the photo more vibrant and engaging, but reducing the accuracy of the colours) 2- Printing full colour (CMYK) is notoriously bad for high variance in printed material, the same art printed on two different process printers can vary greatly in the final result. Brands normally get around this by using pantone swatches, but you cant print a photo with pantones.

The main reason the box art doesn't match the paints the box art recommends using is because it is just that; a recommendation to get close to the box art result. The box art is painted by the 'Eavy Metal team and they use a lot more (and different) colours and techniques than is practical for the casual hobbyist. And GW has compromised by simplifying the recipes and recommending colours that get you close enough. You can check out Infernalbrush who used to work as an 'Eavy Metal painter to both see the process and what paints are actually used.

I recently started using my magnifying table lamp to paint an entire drukhari army. It ended up looking so much better by the end. Whether old or not, if you can't tell you're painting over something or missing a spot, it'll add up. But definitely take breaks often. Focusing like that for too long can really drain you fast.

How about tyranids. Round shapes calling for volumetric highlights and the all biological, but different textures should be a breath of fresh air amongst all the homogeneous inorganic materials and machine-cut edges of the 41. millenium :D

Paint an older GW mini with a sculpt you particularly love. I really like the old school eldrad mini for example. Either that or feature something stupid big from an STL patreon. Make your own box art for a mini that may never get it's own.

Hey Jon- Here's a video I'd love to see you do: Choose any mini you want to paint. As you paint, keep a swatch on your palette of each shade you mix and use. When you're done I'd love to see your palette with all of those swatches. It would help me get a better grasp of how much each new highlight color differs from the previous color/layer. For wicking paint off. I have paper pallet with some texture paste in the top corner. This is great for wicking paint off as it doesnt soak out moisture like a paper towel.

I feel like 'Eavy Metal absolutely does follow their "all over wash" technique. They just ONLY use glazes beyond that step and build like 120 layers of milk thin paint up to the box art saturation. Generally instead of Agrax or Nuln they'll use a black glaze too for their washes.

Despite not having flat, planar surfaces in abundance, Eldar have plenty of edges and gaps for panel lining and edge highlights, though these are usually also curvilinear, and not straight-edge, nor completely organic shapes either. They're sort of in the visual middle-ground from Tau-Marines-Eldar-Tyranids.

I know it's difficult to judge because you're filming at the same time, but I think it would be interesting to know how long this process took you. Often we see amazing models on line with absolutely no context, and it can give false expectations.

This is such an under rated comment. When trying a new technique it is great to understand if something took a while. Eg NMM sometimes looks like it takes a few strokes. But have a tangible number can help focus people. Not so much as a goal but as hard indication of someone's scale of time.

Hey, when painting skin, one technique I used that pushed my faces up to 11 was adding warm and cool tones. add a little bit of red to your base skin, and wash it over the ears, nose and cheeks. Do the same with purple and hit the eyesockets. Really makes them feel alive

While I do enjoy these 'Eavy Metal paint videos I feel as if everyone has done them. That's not so say I wouldn't enjoy another video, but I feel as if some of your other videos are more unique and interesting to watch. I would love to see you paint another dry brush model using the techniques and tips you got from Byron from Artist Opus. Also, your 3 paint roulette video was probably my favorite one yet. Your creativity and talent really comes through on those types of paints versus "following" the box art. Regardless, I'll watch any video you put out as you have become my favorite KZbin minipainter.

Great video and tips for edge highlighting. I also agree with others in doing an Eldar unit like a Jetbike with more smoother curves (no airbrush) to help showcase different blending techniques like wet blending, glazing etc.

I’m glad to see that other people actually use washes as glazes, I’ve been doing this ever since, awhile. Using browns and sepias are good for making things warm, but I actually use Athonian Camoshade for lots of other stuff. And since they are super thin they are pretty forgiving.

Consider using a shorter rigger/scripter brush for edge highlighting Jon. They're pretty much uniform width the whole length of the bristles and you don't have to worry about only using the tip of a pointed round.

Great looking model. I say try dark angels... When you talk about that one high light which GW put on to make it pop. That neon green layer they door can be hit or miss I been paint Dark Angt since 2016 and still have not mastered that edge highlight

Thickness of the Moot Green lines is key. Since the color really pops the edge highlight should be reaaaaally thin.

After seeing some of the box art models in the flesh I would say the key Is to have a very skilled photography and editing department that do some great work with lighting, photoshop touch ups and additional blending. . I learned that a lot of people feel bad that they can't paint to a standard to match a product in a picture where as their painting is actually as good if not better but they just don't have the camera equipment and photography or photoshop skills.

I have a 20 year old white dwarf with the heavy metal painting guide for tau. It involved multiple layers of a brown basecoat, with each coat with more of tau second colour added in. Finally the main colour, vomit brown was added after multiple bases of the other colours. These paints had a very low pigment and needed all the help they could et from the brown paint to have any chance of covering over a black primer.

I've recently had a breakthrough with edge highlights that have improved my results no end. I've found that I get best results by using a different consistency paint and a different stroke for each pass. For the first fairly thick highlights I use a layer consistency paint, that's not too much brighter than the base. I paint with the tip of the brush (in the usual way of painting elsewhere), parallel and UP to the edge rather than the side of the brush on the very corner of the edge. Otherwise I have to risk using the side of the belly to get a thicker highlight and risk potentially making a mess. The layer consistency and wider highlight allows to create a first highlight that's not too stark in contrast and leaves space for the next one or two highlights. For the second highlight I use a much thicker consistency paint (basically a base coat consistency) and I wick/unload as much of the paint as I can without it drying on the bristles. Then with a super light touch I use the side of the tip along the actual edge in the traditionalists fashion. It's almost like a targeted edge drybrush and it means you can create SUPER crisp highlights that once again aren't too stark. I find if I try to do the same but with a layer consistency like the first, I either don't leave a uniform stroke, or the highlight just looks like paint rather than actual light. Funny how people can have so many different styles for the same technique and all get great results. Love your videos mate!

Well done for doing this! I have recently been trying to paint box art accurate skaven stormfiends and honestly nearly lost my sanity trying to replicate the blue. I now have over 12 different citadel blue paints (at least) and I still wont believe they've been using kantor blue. I have noticed however they do 100% do some post editing and up the contrast for the website pictures at least!

My favorite style I've seen Tau painted in is Comic Book style, the art style of Borderlands. It just fits so well and it's funny to watch people paint Tau in the Claptrap or the Atlas/Hyperion Corporation color scheme

One thing I think is a big fallacy with how GW teaches people to paint and in their 'eavy metal style: The high contrast edge highlight. While a good edge highlight does help, you need a very smooth, subtle blend into it, or it just looks like a bad cartoony paintjob. I do something like a feathering/stippled wet-drybrushing or whatever to get a much more subtle fine highlight. Imagine trying to drybrush with the sharpest brush you have with the smallest, gentlest motions and not really dry paint. Just thing paint mostly wiped off the brush, but kept moist. The video does a great job explaining this. I went to a GW paint class and watched many videos by miniature artists on youtube, but from my own painting background I knew it produced bad results. Thanks for finally showing people the right way to blend and highlight models, Ninjon. I had to figure it out on my own, but it's good to see you summarize it so well and share it with the world. Now if I can just find a miniature painter to properly explain primer paint to the world. Or maybe I just need to learn to youtube myself.

I was the commenter who explained the difference between the "back of the box/website" recipes and the 'Eavy Metal recipes for miniatures back when you did the Death Guard video, and how the back of the box recipe is 99% of the time a highly simplified version of the actual recipe used by the Eavy Metal Team. Here's the 'Eavy Metal Recipe for Tau. Also, I'm pretty sure Max Falej painted Darkstrider, he's an incredible painter and don't be surprised if your result still doesn't look like his in terms of blending. Man's insane lol. Armour Basecoat: Tau Light Ochre Shade: Skrag Brown Highlight 1: Ungor Flesh Highlight 2: Ushabti Bone Final Highlight: Pure White Sept Markings Basecoat: Ulthuan Grey Layer: White Scar Fatigues Basecoat: Rhinox Hide Shade: Abbadon Black (watered down) Highlight: Rhinox Hide + Ushabti Bone 50/50 Final Highlight: Ushabti Bone Dark Red Accent Colour Basecoat: Khorne Red + Abaddon Black 50/50 Highlight: Basecoat mix + Ushabti Bone 80/20 Final Highlight Basecoat Mix + Ushabti Bone 60/40 Tau Skin ( I honestly think Max made some alterations to this recipe just because new Tau haven't been painted in a while and it's a character so why not?) Biggest change to my painting and my ability to learn was buying magnification glasses. You can better see errors, the way the paint flows and acts etc. Skin looks wicked dude.

I really liked how the lenses on the drones came out, they really look like they have transparent glass lenses.

If one can't afford them smexy zoomy glasses, plain reading glasses El-Cheapo big pack works as well. Just poke them infront of your own Grandma style and it works really well. I have a set of those enlarging ones as well but at times plonking down a 2nd set of glasses is easier. 🙂
