Not totally true. If you get to the "anti-hardlock" the first time through when many of the wigglers are dead from the star, it is an anti-softlock. Just ask @defybydefault .

It's levels like these that make me realise how good Carl is at level design. Hear me out, that star at the second checkpoint is to show the player that stars make them invulnerable to the hardlock, showing them that if they get the star they're safe. They can't avoid that, it's part of the teaching, and stops confusion about "do I need to go back for the star?" at the end - they immediately know what the solution is and why (and kick themselves when they see they just need to wait!). Fantastic!

I didn't realize the timing on the second set of stars until I watched the compilation either. Not just when they show up, but how they're perfectly timed so that when you go for the first set and get bounced, you immediately go for the second set which sets you up for another bounce, etc.

He introduces concepts like the wiggler hardlock right at the start in a simple two-step: First with springs to get the player to definitely lock, second with the skull barrier to teach the player it's not just springs as well as show the wigglers moving horizontally across the level, and then those come together for the gauntlet testing the players' skills. And as you said, the star checkpoint teaches players the star is safety so they know to go for it later, and the wind traps make the player learn how to play with the wind etc etc. Good game design. Evil, but good.

@@Dilbet disagree. This level is purposely full of very fast and easy tricks so that even after a hardlock you don't take much time to get back. There are also a lot of regular trolls that are just funny, keeping players engaged despite the bullshit. This level HAD to be good, or else. Sure, they probably pushed through the first hardlocks because "it's carl's level", but there is a lot of actually good level design to be found here

Fun fact, after seeing some streamers play this level, I started toying around with this in the level editor, and one time when the game hardlocked, my Joy-cons got borked after I closed the game, and they were permanently inputting the button press and joystick directions they were held when the hardlock occurred. I had to go into settings and hit "update controllers" to fix it.

My personal highlights of this are bedcliff eating an onion which still had the skin on, the dude who waited down the timer for the whole of the checkpoint softlock, only to stumble right back into it, DGR and the repeated pizzalocks, someone completing the 5 golden swings and still getting softlocked, just the absolute sheer look of betrayal at 34:06, mr CP0 with the fuck you carl screen, and you somehow trolling geek after the level had ended.
