If you are unsure about the scale of transformation, scale the floor plan so that interior doors are between 32 to 36 inches wide

I have used this for my kitchen when installing LED "can" lights. A transparent circle of yellow to show the area that will be lighted so I can figure out the spacing between lights. I used Excel which made it easy to create a grid and snap shapes to the correct dimensions.

I haven't done it with a computer, but I did do this back in the early 1970's using graph paper and colored pencils or markers. Worked much the same way.

There is a "free" software (test version) called room arranger and its so awesome you can recreate everything and then even see how it would look in 3d. It was extreeemely helpful setting up the furniture layout when we moved into a slighty smaller appartment

It's actually a web version of Gimp (which is also free) and you can install it on Linux, Windows or Mac.

Pro mover back again. My customers occasionally come prepared with a floor plan and while it does usually help, only a fraction survive contact with move day! The plan usually falls apart rapidly and I often find myself giving interior design advice based on how many rooms I've set up for people over the years!
