The more I use Linux (fedora currently), the more I realize why Windows 11 is so bad... it's by design. What do I mean by that? Well, watch the video. I think I hone in on the reasons Microsoft does what they do. A lot of it has to do with their mainstream status and need to be "safe for everyone" even if they aren't technical. But, there are more reasons.
We'll also talk about how Microsoft makes money, because that plays a major role in what a company does. I compare this with the Linux community and how things are not always driven by money.
Watch the video for all the ranting and details.

The most frustrating things to me about Windows are: 1) It takes more clicks to do something than before 2) Mouse travel distance is much greater for common tasks (look at the travel distance to sleep the PC in Win10 vs. 11 from the Start menu) and 3) They move at a snail's pace. We should have ALL settings in the "new" settings menu by now and we don't.

that's why tiled window managers are so nice and efficient. when i use my pc with hyprland, my normie friends think i'm a computer genius hacking NASA. xD but in reality i just opened and closed a few windows, copy/pasted something and switched 2 windows to another workspace. Now everytime i go to my windows partition (once a week or so), i feel like everything takes forever because i have to tediously move my mouse from north to south and alt+tab 4 times to get it right. xD

i hate how windows removes stuff like moving your taskbar to the sides/top and the only way to do that is to modify the registry. autohide doesn't even really work because it shows your taskbar when there is a notification instead of just showing it to you without the taskbar.

but actually, after watching all the way through..... I do have a few random thoughts of my own. imagine if Microsoft "pulled an Apple" and said: hey, the Windows platform is free for anyone with "compatible hardware".. they would fall back to only making their money through other services (which are by no means insignificant), and quite likely some "products to enhance the Windows experience". but if the base OS itself was free, well.. that would be a whole bright and shiny new world right there. or if we don't go that far down the rabbithole, perhaps just make that lower "OEM price" the standard for a base version of Windows, and sell the "Enterprise" and "Server" functionality separately...? they have the networking prowess to pull off any kind of deployments they choose to... including giving system admins the tools to do that themselves, within scoped networks. so it's not *impossible*, but even that would be a whole new world. anyways, putting the pipe dreams aside, I'll boot back into Windows again next time I feel like playing games... Windows 10 Pro with a local account is still just the best modern day option for gaming.. including with the use of emulators and "compatibility fixes" for the older games. but otherwise, I myself have fully moved over to Linux now.
@egarcia1360
@egarcia1360 Ай бұрын
@@AndreGreeff the thing is, as far as the typical end consumer is concerned, Windows is already effectively free, as it comes pre-installed on almost every computer sold by every major retailer. For the comparatively few people building their own PCs, I doubt the cost of a license key will be the deciding factor in what OS they install; most people will unfortunately just go with Windows because it's what they know, with the more frugal segment finding the abundant OEM keys discussed in the video or just cracking it. That said, it would be really interesting if the cost of the OS were more transparent, with users able to choose between paying for Windows or just getting a Linux distro for free (on more than just a few relatively niche devices; Framework and that one Dell laptop come to mind but nothing else atm). I imagine we'd see quite a spike in usage then, but as it stands, most people aren't directly confronted with the reality where it counts-their wallets-so change will continue to be slow for a while.

I really wish there was more of this "sucks by design" discussion instead of the "this sucks, I hate this, that's bad, that's ugly, etc." type of discussion. I like the design language behind the new settings app in windows 11. I don't like that it only includes 10% of what you used to be able to control. Problem with Microsoft store is that 1) you can't install free stuff without an account. There's really no point in trying to track your "purchases", or in this get your "gets", if everything is free. Especially when free software is rampant because each app wants you to download it for free, but unlock the full version with money by signing in to an account for the software. Now, if installing from the MS store required a login even for free stuff, then it shouldn't convert my local windows account into an online Microsoft account. I just wanted to install something from MS store, and Microsoft equates that to an invitation not to log my purchases but to scrape data involving everything I do on my computer. The reason I'm okay with Apple IDs being a nice tool to enhance your experience on Mac OS is that iTunes still uses its own account, every app still asks permission to use the Apple ID instead of assuming permission and offering no way to revoke, and it's still possible to happily use Mac OS without an Apple ID.

"MICA" effect on windows 11 is feels so heavy and laggy, since as we know that most of Windows 11 UI/UX are just a new whole layer on top of the another layer of Windows 10 UI/UX. No wonder also plenty of user that I found on alot of forum complaints about this overall UI/UX feels heavy, lagyy, and irritating to use. May some of minorities doesn't have this problem but believe me that majority of people does have this problem. You can get rid of that slushy feeling in the UI, but it basically requires getting rid of all the OS security options. You need to disable most of the exploit protections, control flow guard, memory encryption/randomization, etc. Also need to disable virtualization based security (VBS) and then completely disable Defender and real-time protection via group policy. Microsoft knows it's audience are casuals and normies, people who don't know not to click on absolutely everything, so the OS has been tailored and built around protecting those people, as a result, if you don't go in and gut all those security features, you're going to have a huge software layer between you and your hardware that creates a lot of slush.

There used to be a design paradigm that was much more common in the Windows 9x days for programs. That design paradigm basically offered a default group of settings. Within the program's settings menu or interface, you were given a set of common settings that were most likely to be changed. However, beyond that, there was also an advanced settings menu or interface with options for power users. I genuinely miss that design paradigm because it offered flexibility to cater to more advanced users while keeping regular users relatively "safe" from themselves. Nowadays, the design paradigm is simplicity to the point of near uselessness for programs and Windows itself.

The whole UI and menu systems are basically a nerd thing. Normies don't care and Windows knows it. As far as making money, of course that's the goal. No non tech cares about open source. I've used Windows since version 3.1. Their design language has gotten worse over the years. It all started with the 8 version, when they introduce those god damn tiles. I also want my operating system to not get in the way of my workflow so that's why I use macOS and Linux for work and Windows for games only. It's extremely sad that they make this operating worse with each update. Funny story: a while ago I was editing a video on Premiere Windows version and I left my computer to make myself some tea. When I returned, it was in updating - restart mode. If I didn't have autosave on, I would've lost 3hrs of work.

Have to use a severely locked down windows 11 PC at work and it's so fugly and irritating, there's zero ability to customize anything to be more functional due to restrictions, so I can't turn off the widgets popup when hovered over even though everything that would go there is blocked for security reasons, so it randomly opens and closes while I'm trying to complete tasks at work no matter what app I'm using, just to say widgets are blocked in a black pop-up window that takes over 80 percent of my monitor for 2-3 seconds. And yet I also cannot customize the taskbar to look like a goddamn taskbar instead of some bs iPhone navigation bar. I despise it. That's before getting into everything that only partially works as it's supposed to in win 11 esp for apps in chrome for win 11, especially when combined with the excessive lockdown of all settings. It's enough to make an adult weep and that's before considering any of the annoying bs and stress of the job and dealing with frustrated people and all the corporate red tape that prevents you from doing your job, especially when not everyone has win 11 yet so those who don't have it don't believe you when certain things don't work properly and it's just a complete mess.

Don't really agree with these takes, or at least not to an extent I'd label Windows 11 is bad. While old school me dislikes the inflexibility of like the Start Menu when I used to like to customize every little thing that Windows would let me back in the '98 days, looking at my modern usage of it, I pretty much only use the keyboard to open and use search to instant open whatever I need. I've not gone in there using my mouse cursor and browse through the different folders in years, so TBH I don't really care. I've no problem with the modern normie settings. They can be useful to handle simple things because they're not as cluttered so stuff is easier to find in them, but I'm also glad there's still the good old Control Panel for if I need to dig a little deeper. There's no jumping through hoops involved. I can access the Control Panel or other advanced settings just as quickly as I do the normie settings. Been using Windows for nearly 3 decades and never got a single ad. I don't know what people are doing or going to claim Windows uses its platform to bombard you with ads, because I'm not seeing it. But I also pretty much never use Windows Store. If I need a game, I use Steam. If I need software, I get it off their website. Looking at what Microsoft gets money from, I can safely say they're not making anything off me outside of the OEM key. Pirated Office, I don't use Xbox, or Azure, or LinkedIn, and I don't use their built-in search for online searches either, and my browser's adBlock is enabled 24/7 anytime. While I wouldn't be against more customisability (the idea of moving it to the pro version is pretty good TBH), I can't say I care enough either, as long as it gets the job done for me. Yeah, it kind of sucks the taskbar and the icons on them is like 20% bigger than I'd like it to be, but it's also not going to cause me to claim the new Windows is bad. It's like... whatever. Could be better, could be a lot worse too. Will probably be building a new PC in 3-4 years from now, so going to keep an eye out on developments. If Windows does decide to go to hell during that time, I'll probably consider Linux for my next build.

Congrats on being the stereotypical human in fantasy with high adaptability. I envy you. For those of us who aren't.. especially folks with autism (hi), well, it's a major major issue. I stayed on older OS versions until enough software just plain ceased working anymore. Same with browsers (and even moreso, since directwrite ruined font rendering). That was the only time I forced an upgrade, and then I had to find even more software/extensions to get things back to how they were, because god forbid a company leave working things alone. Dealing with change drives tons of anxiety through me to the point I can just breakdown, I can't stand it. Companies don't have people like me even as a fragment of an atom in their brain. I upgraded to W10 via the accessibility route, and it was LESS accessible than Vista/7. To this very day I still do things that were last possible in XP. To this very day I'm still negatively impacted by changes made in Vista (like dragging icons and it not grabbing the icon despite highlighting it). Change without options (especially if it HAD options) should never be how you design software. If it is, then don't release it to the public, because it's not designed for anyone but yourself. I'd call the people that do this terminal narcissists.

I feel like motherboard manufacturers have had this figured out from the start. I don't believe making different windows versions as you suggested is the way to go, as people will inevitably gravitate towards the "pro" or "ultimate" versions because they think it's better because it sounds better and costs more so it would still cause the problems you said here. Instead they could just have one single toggle that's hidden deep into some menus where you can flip it into "advanced" and then by default, the fully fledged advanced interfaces will always open when uyou try to go any deeper than the widgets in the Taskbar, there, it's fixed, everyone will be happy, no dumb user will mess up their own experience by accident.

no major issues mentioned though to be honest, new Settings design in Windows 11 is MUCH better than what's in Windows 10, and if you want Control Panel, then just pin it on taskbar or startmenu and use it, you don't need to use Windows Store at all, problems with Windows 11 I'm having recently (managing VMs mostly) are for ex. ping and remote desktop not working at all because printer sharing not enabled by default on private networks, or power management not working properly at all due to clash of old vs new settings, also downloading anything "unsigned" from github is by default being blocked now by Defender in all browsers, ripping out Defender is more and more tricky with every new update, install itself is also more and more tricky, Ventoy and Parallels bypass those luckily yet, but going fresh bypassing OOBE no longer works now, also Windows Update is still annoying and behaving unexpectedly, regardless on how I customize OpenShell menus of shutdown/reboot entries :D

I tried Linux several times and found myself facing constant problems. I even spent weeks going through the forums trying to find out how to fix those problems - but I kept uncovering more and more problems. It's the natural result of a fully open source platform. And while it's not ideal right now, I think Linux will begin gaining market share at a much faster rate than it has been. And once the market penetration exceeds 10% (which I think will definitely happen due to the issues users are having with OSX and Windows), third party support will skyrocket. It's already started happening. I didn't want all the choice that Linux offered, but I grew to appreciate it once I learned about the ecosystem. If you're even moderately tech savvy, I highly recommend giving it a shot.
