You mentioned you were planning to replace the SSDs with mechanical drives, It would be cool if you made a guide on how to make it work with 3.5'' drives since all internet guides work with 2.5'' formats.
@SmartHomeCircle
@SmartHomeCircle 6 ай бұрын
There nothing much to do when replacing 2.5' to 3.5'. To make it work with 3.5' drives, you just need to use SATA extension cable. Here is an example cable on amazon. amzn.to/4fkokrq . Also you would need something like 12v 8A power supply as 3.5' drives take more energy.

@@johanneskingma at the time, I was more familiar with the old RAID setup which came with OMV before, which is now provided via multiple devices plugin. I was supposed to explore zfs, but somehow didn't get time to get to it. I might make a video about it , so stay tuned. 🙂

nice video and great idea bout the case ! just a tiny thing , you might want to make few lines for ventilation on the opposite side like the ones on the ssd mounts in size 5 of em should be fine just so the warm air can escape from the opposite side !
@SmartHomeCircle
@SmartHomeCircle 2 ай бұрын
@@venix20 yes. That can be done.. I dint do it to reduce the dust getting inside. However the panels are not tightly sealed.. so there is some space for air to leave..

What's the plan if the microSD card gets damaged? How would you restore the RAID 5 setup with a new microSD card and a fresh OMV installation? I'm planning to build a NAS using a Raspberry Pi 5, but I haven't done a lab test to ensure it can be restored in this scenario. Congrats for the video, very cool.
@SmartHomeCircle
@SmartHomeCircle 2 ай бұрын
@@williammantovani1913 thats a good point. I am currently relying on taking a copy of the entire nas data from the sata drives to an external hd via usb. But i see there are plugins to take configuration backups of omv. I will try and see how this backup and restore works. It's a good idea for a video also.. 🙂
@williammantovani1913
@williammantovani1913 2 ай бұрын
@@SmartHomeCircle I was thinking about creating a very precise copy of the SD card using a tool like dd or Win32DiskImager. The real challenge, however, is keeping this backup up to date. My biggest nightmare would be losing the RAID configuration, rebuilding it from scratch would be almost impossible. I’m excited to share this brainstorming session for a new video and can’t wait to see it.
@SmartHomeCircle
@SmartHomeCircle Ай бұрын
I have already figured this out. There is a plugin in OMV to take the microsd card as a backup which can be flashed again to the microSD Card. I will be making a video about the whole backup scenario soon.

So first thank you for this tutorial! I have a few issues I hope you can help with - Since adding the SATA HAT the cpu fan kicks on at start, but won't try and kick on again to cool the CPU even when it passes 50C. - Download files from it are 120 mb/s uploading to it is 80 mb/s. Drives are 500 mb/s after testing same way u did, using 2.5Gb USB to ethernet adapter. Help is appreciated :)

- I am not sure about the why the CPU fans dont kick off. Dont happen to me - Are you accessing the network with 2.5Gbit Router or USB on you computer? Both needs to use 2.5 Gbit connection.

not sure that fan will do much, you need to add some vents on the opposite panel to get so flow through, alt that will do is create a low pressure inside the box if it wasn't for leaky panels. likely the pi is running hotter that if there was no fan.
@SmartHomeCircle
@SmartHomeCircle 2 ай бұрын
The panels are not air tight. Also the fan runs at really slow speed just enough to pull little heat out. It's just enough ventilation.

You must have bought all of the remaining ribbon cables in the world!!! After waiting several weeks for this hat to be delivered, I opened the box and discovered that the ribbon cable was missing!!! Without the ribbon cable, this thing is a 50USD paper weight!!! I have contacted Radxa, but so far no reply. An extra cable is available for 2.50USD, but shipping will cost me and extra 12.50USD!!! So far, this thing is a big useless FLOP!

Sorry to hear that 😕. I think it's an in complete product that is delivered to you. I had seen some reviews on Arace, they didn't get the cable, so I had brought an extra one. But turns out it was already there in my package. I can only say, try reaching radxa directly using the contact page. I hope they solve your issue. You can check on AliExpress if they are selling it separately so that you don't have to pay the hefty shipping cost. I hope you get to enjoy the hat soon 🙂
