How would you use these mysterious, ethereal beings in your campaign? Have you ever employed something similar in any of your sessions? Rakshasa - they are mentioned a lot but actually none of them in truth, there is much opened and would be interesting to hear Ed on them as he fit them in many various areas over the realms. But what are rakshasas?
@theprofessorkeen19118 ай бұрын
Are they truly undead, or simply transformed. Either way, I would fear they would be targeted by many unsavory groups and monsters.
@johnwolf28298 ай бұрын
I honestly don't know how I could. Perhaps in a D&D//Lovecraftian crossover. As a group, I mean. Individually, they would be great for just about anything, most especially as a recurring nemesis for a Party of the usual suspects.
@pelinoregeryon65938 ай бұрын
Not really, the closest I ever got to a race like that (but never used in a game, just ideas on paper) was perhaps an ancient tribe of body hopping magic jar abusing elves who's original bodies were all long gone, often used simulacrum bodies, so all mages of course, their civilisation was long fallen but exploring it's ruins you might come across a surviving magic jar with one inside waiting for a new body, something to make the players worry about any gems they found, because I'm mean like that ;) .. [ponders] and not at all close to this at all really, something else entirely, just forget I said anything ;)

I remember the Maraloi being mentioned offhand in the Kara-Tur boxed set and the novel Horselords by David Cook back in the 90s. It's nice to learn some concrete facts about them. Eke Bayalun, the ambitious wife of the Tuigan conqueror Yamun Khahan, was a Maraloi-descended half-elf.

Yes, I did. Wasn't expecting this. Still great.

That's what I assumed when I first read about them in Kara-Tur sources in 2nd edition. Perhaps Mountain Folk are descended from humans who were possessed by Maraloi.

As someone who's been directing a campaign for more than 15 years focused on The Seldarine. Thank you so much Ed, everything on this video is something nice to know. Also this might be the first piece of new lore from Kara-Tur in maybe decades? Specially from Ama-Basin which is probably the Kara-Tur area with the least lore I think.

In my version of the Realms the Tuigan are locked in a brutal conflict with grey orks. While winning most of the fights grey half orcs are growing in numbers within the Tuigan tribes. Will the blood of Grumush run true as the Tuigan are bred into half orc tribes or will they find some way to maintain their culture and way of life. I also have many chromatic dragons battling over the steppes and demanding tribute and service from all those living in the area.

I really want to call the Maraloi "ghost elves", though I don't think that describes them completely. They also seem to have a very druidic nature (due to Tarsellis's influence), similar to wood elves. It's suprising they wield arcane magic, since druids gain magical powers either from a deity (divine source) or from nature itself (primal source).

Elminster: "The Maraloi are nearly immortal incorporeal spirit elves which can command elementals and possess the bodies of living hosts! Be wary young one." Student: "Master, that sounds terrifying. What can stop them if I ever anger one?" Elminster: (He picks up a simple iron spoon from the table and hands it to his ward with a wink.) "Just keep that in your pocket."

Quick question. The ancient elven spirits that cast meteor swarm into that ravine in ancient Cormanthor while Elminster was fighting in "Elminster in Myth Drannor". Were they just extremely powerful Balenorns or something else?
@VelvetSanity8 ай бұрын
In maraloi possession, who controls the body? Do the body's owner and the maraloi fight for or share control, or is the maraloi always in control? Are there any Eilistraeen communities in that region? For that matter, we know what the Promenade and Dancing Haven look like, and that communities of worshippers tend to form around temples,but both are in unusual locations (particularly the Promenade) for Eilistraeen temples. What does the typical Eilistraeen community and/or home actually look like? (construction materials will obviously vary by local availability, but beyond that and the typical worship site being in a clearing in the woods, we don't have a lot of info on that topic)
@Filbi5 ай бұрын
Eilistraee isn't well known in the Eastern Realms because there aren't many elves there besides the Maraloi, who don't seem to really be elves at all anymore. The people of the Ama Basin mostly worship nature spirits (Druids and Warlocks rather than Clerics, I think) and maybe occasionally the gods of Shou Lung.

Mr. Greenwood, I do believe this is the first time you mentioned about the "Snow Elves". Are they truly a sub variant of the elven race? (like drow) or are they normal elves that live in a colder environs?
@Bhaalspawn8 ай бұрын
I can't remember ever seeing anything on them either.
@Filbi5 ай бұрын
Snow Elves and their god Tarsellis first appeared in Dragon Magazine #155 by David S. Reimer in 1990, and were mentioned again in another article in #236 by Pierce Watters in 1996. They're rumored to live in the Spine of the World mountains south of Icewind Dale and the High Ice glacier north of the Anauroch Desert; they're better documented in the World of Greyhawk, where they're related to the Valley Elves. If I recall correctly they're not too different from regular High Elves but have a unique culture adapted to their environment.

This is really cool! Didn't know the Maraloi in Kara-Tur were a part of Ed's design. Are the Spirit Folk in the Unapproachable East also the same concept (i.e. spirit elves)?
@Filbi5 ай бұрын
Spirit Folk first appeared in the Oriental Adventures book in 1st edition, by Gary Gygax with David Cook and Francois Marcela-Froideval, and I assume they were created by one of them. I think Unapproachable East was the first time they were mentioned in Faerun, and that was by Richard Baker, Matt Forbeck, and Sean K. Reynolds.
