I have seen seen things that would make your heart race...like a whole family "disappear" right before my eyes. But that was mostly between 2011 to 2014. It has actually gotten better. Now the convoys leave people alone. If you don't bother them, they don't bother you. I have a home and a small doggy rescue in one of the colonies and enjoy the peace and quiet we have now. Downtown Laredo has definitely seen better days, I remember when I was a kid back in the 90’s it was full of shops selling Knick knacks mainly owned by Chinese and perfume shops usually owned by Indians, restaurants, banks. Then the outlet mall happened and then the pandemic really was the last nail in the coffin for downtown Laredo. On the other hand, downtown Nuevo Laredo shops are booming then you cross to the Texas side and you mainly see shuttered businesses, it’s very sad. Nowadays it’s mostly just government offices and a few sketchy bars and of course the outlets right next to the bridge.

I am a white American citizen who lives in Juarez. It's true you don't need a passport or anything to cross into Mexico. Truth be known, you don't really need anything crossing back into the US. I had lost my ID & was extremely worried about getting back into the US. I was shocked that by the time I was explaining my issue with Customs Enforcement they already had my life story on their computer screen with a simple picture of my face. I've been living in Juarez 10 months now & I have yet to anyone who wasn't just overly nice to me. It's not something I would recommend to everyone but if you're seeking a little adventure in your life then come try it out. Don't get me wrong, it's a dangerous place which is obvious when you see truck loads of Mexican soldiers driving around armed to the teeth everywhere but what place isn't dangerous anymore.

As a Laredoan you say its not bad and such because your just there for a brief moment during the day. Well yeah its not bad all the time there and also depends where you are in Nuevo Laredo too. Stay longer, wait till nightfall. Go alittle deeper than just the entrance, go with a woman, go with a car or better clothes/accessories. You can honestly say this about alot of places that are actually dangerous too, your safe for a time and place but the citizens of Nuevo Laredo and Laredo and so on all know better. We know where to go, when, and what to do and streets to take. Of course some of the people from there will tell you its fine lol. Find the real ones who won't lie and they'll give you the warnings and their personal accounts. There is no real law there due to the military and cops and citizens being in the backpocket of the criminals. Some of my family hasn't ever come back alive and never will. So yeah there is no exaggeration on what people say about going down there...Your at least in the safer zone as your just in the entrance but go further and you'll know you messed up. This is why tourists need to understand better from the locals on both sides of the border and those who visit, if we say its bad, its bad. Didn't use to be so bad before though which is sad. Glad you had a safe time and got to experience abit of it. Downtown laredo is empty because the city doesn't want to do anything and was just a place to buy knockoff stuff. Stores shutdown alot and paying for parking meters and this heat. Downtown just died.

AS the other guy said its definitely dangerous, not the same. It was abit dangerous before but now its actually alot worse. There is a reason the alert for tourism is red. Take it from the other commentor who is from there and from another local from Laredo who's from here and been over there try to avoid going to Nuevo Laredo if possible. Familes, indivduals, tourists have gone but don't come back. You don't need to be another unlucky person just going and not returning just for a "fun time" Its Mexico, they won't find you nor try to. I'm from Nuevo Laredo, and i have heard all those opinions about the insecurity and all that stuff, but it is not that bad as a lot of people think, i have ran across trucks with cartel members a lot of times and they don't mess with you or the people unless you do something wrong, and also (ironically) it is less likely to see robberies, kidnappings or other things since if the cartel finds out, they literally kill the people who dares to do such thing because they don't allow those kind of things in their territory, so you're ok as long as you don't do something bad or something they don't like. I have lived in this city since i was born and i haven't got a bad experience refering to the insecurity other than just hearing the gun fights in the distance

Mexico isn’t even bad, don’t get me wrong there is places that you should avoid! and I recommend traveling on plane. When you travel on a charter bus, sometimes and this isn’t always because I’ve never experienced it myself, but I know people who have. There is random “narco checkpoints” that narcos will board your bus or stop your car and ask you questions about where you’re going and who you’re visiting and take your cellphones, money, or anything valuable. From stories from family and friends, it’s a fast paced thing if you don’t fight back and god forbid that you dont because that will be worst for you. Always stay on tourist parts and never go out alone to unfamiliar areas you don’t know. Have a guide with you if you’re not familiar or have family there. Mexico is not a place bad and it has very beautiful places, it’s just sad how its government and narcos have affected it.
@josedelnegro465 ай бұрын
A bus is not an independent means of transportation. Getting on a plane only means getting in a taxi or ride share once the plane lands. Never carry more than the clothes on your back. If you do store it at the terminal. Then walk out of the airport. I use a mountain bike. I take it out of the box. Put it back together. Then I ride out of the airport. I make sure that the spotters know I am a local no matter what they read on the manifest. Remember, the plane, the train, the bus has a list of passengers. The bad guys get a copy of that list. The target people. They do not commit random robberies. They do not want an undercover cop to draw down on them and call for back up. So putting your name and point of embarcations and debarcation on a manifest along with paying for the ticket on a banking device is a gift to the thieves who pay for inside information. Always be able to get 10 miles from an airport in the world without having to ride share or call a taxi. Carry a mountain bike with you on every bus, plane, automobile, and train. Make sure if you do not know where you are going to put your Google Maps into, per se Nuevo Laredo, in French or German. The hawks listen to every move you make on the street. What are Hawks? They are guys that are paid to watch intersections, side walks, terminals etc. They also watch stores, restaurants, and shopping centers.. You can tell them by the walkie talkies they carry. If they give you an order no matter how young they are follow it. That is why I am never on foot. They also, will try to direct car traffic. If you have to take a ride share or a taxi never have them drop you off at your destination. You want to get out. Go into another location and look for hawks. Lastly, crossing any international gateway in or out of the US has an online video feed. The bad guys watch those feeds also. Mountain bike! Do not walk. Do not drive. Do not take a taxi. Do not use ride share services. Public transportation, the city bus is fine. But make sure to have a mountain bike with you.

@@The_Menace_To_Societyy Your question maybe can one do less than I suggest and be okay? Yes one can take a taxi. One can go to the Taxi stop at an airport and yell "Taxi". To every argument there is a counter argument.

As with ANY city or location in the US there are good spots, and not so good spots. Same with people. I think everyone understands that. I think the difference comes, when bad or inconvenient stuff happens to you, or your loved ones; that will kind of skew your opinion negativly a little. That could happen anywhere, in any country. Machacado plain, or con huevo is delicious, but you need good teeth. The best dishes I like are Arracherra (fajita meat), and the Alambres which are like beef shish-kebab on little wood skewers. Use a fresh hot tortilla to pull off the meat from the skewer on to your tortilla, add some salsita, chopped onion, or cilantro if you like. Boom! What a great taco. Served along with quesadillas de queso blanco de cabra on the side. You'll notice that real Mexican food is not drowned in "Que-so Sauce". That, and a little of the green "salsita casera" made with chile piquin de monte, and some fresh guacamole are fantastic. Have a "Coka" and a smile.

I have lived here all my life. I spent 6-7 years in my grandparents house in nuevo Laredo and lived in Laredo for 18. I never walk across. Why? I don't need to. Texas is my home and it's genuinely better here. I don't care much for street food or tacos. Many places in Nuevo Laredo are dangerous, yes, especially at night. Even being near the border is bad for you at night. There's a lot of gang activity here. There were times in the past when I couldn't even visit my grandma, the only time I ever visit this town, because there were frequent gang shootings and it was too dangerous to cross. Children get kidnapped a lot in Mexico, nuevo Laredo being no exception. Heck even Laredo has many of these problems. Many of the houses are run down and just ugly. You see this in downtown Laredo as well. The town of Laredo is literally separated between the White Hispanic side of Laredo and the brown Hispanic side of Laredo. Not segregated in any sense, but Northern Laredo was simply built by White people, like me. A lot of the run down houses, gang activity, and low education buildings are in brown or east/south Laredo. Laredo and Nuevo Laredo are nice towns with great people, but there are a lot of problems here, some of the worst we get from our Mexican neighbor as their problems spill into our town, other problems are just unique to us.

That looked like Guardia Nacional right by the pedestrian bridge. Keeping any hoodlums and thugs off of your back in the barrier zone, as long as you don't venture into the interior. No pickpockets or purse snatchers right within view of the bridge or the crossing.

Dude, I can say the same about Houston, Dallas, or Chicago or any populous US city. Large population centers are always gonna have both good n' bad folks, & locations. Its what individual people do, or do not do that makes a location. And BTW, how do you know? I've lived in large cities, and the border cities for a number of years. Ain't no difference one from another. It all depends on how you look at, and treat people.

@@stevenserna910 I went to Nuevo Laredo one time to walk around and check out the stores. I was standing outside the store waiting for it to open and some guy with a radio came up to me and asked me what I was doing around the plaza. I told him that I was just shopping around but he told me not to leave that they needed to check something with me first. I speak Spanish so I heard the guy on the radio say to let me go, that I am just a tourist shopping around. I decided that if I was going to be tracked I better head back to Laredo Texas instead. when I was close to the bridge I decided to get some food at one of those street carts before crossing, and another guy came up to me and asked me what I was really doing around the plaza. i told him the same thing i told the other guy. he left and i fking left as soon as i finished my food lol

I say this on ever travel viedo: Makes sure you have an independent means of transportation. Taxis are not independent means of transportation. DeDe and other ride shares are not independent means of transport. Mountain bikes are independent means of transportation. Do not eat food that has been sitting on a hot plate Do not eat food that is prepaired on a cart. Do not eat beet, pork, chicken, and seafood at restaurants that you do not understand the public health licence of. Do not drive a car into México until you understand the traffic patterns and rules. Méxicans do not stop at stop signs. Failue to yeiled to someone behind you, even if you are going the speed limit can lead to deadly road rage. If you are on the Mexican side of the border in a remote location do not go within 200 feet of the border. It is illegal to cross unless one crosses at a check point. You do not want either side to become confused as to your intentions. Why come to Nuevo Laredo? The language. If you want full immersion Spanish no place in the Americas is better. The populations on both sides are generally bilingual. The international airports on both sides have flights to any place in the world. The fee from the area's small airports to larger hubs is not excessive. Most often it is the same price as if you were to have embarked from a major hub. I personally do not see any reason to ever leave the United States. The US has everything. The only thing the US does not have is full linguistics immersion. Are there other places in Mexico that one can immerse one's self in Spanish? Sure. But the longer the travel time the lesser is the amount of immersion. One can reach Nuevo Laredo and any other major border town in 4 hours or less by air from any point in the continental US. The other advantage to Nuevo Laredo Tamaulipas Mexico is the US Consulate is in the geographic center of town. If you have problems go there. If you can't get there get to a bridge. If you cannot get to the bridge head across the river. Yes. You will get arrested but the bad guys chasing you will get arrested also. You want to learn Spanish you cannot do better than Nuevo Laredo Tamaulipas Mexico. Every type of Spanish will be heard there from all over the world.
