I normally prefer to pull a weld but it depends on the situation, sometimes you can get a flatter weld by doing the opposite, so sometimes I will push for that reason.
@MrHunterseeker2 жыл бұрын
2:26 I got state certified in my shop class back in high school with welding, got my certificates on MIG, STICK, TIG, and Torch Brazing. My instructor always said the reason you don't want to "push" or go "downhill" when welding is for penetration. If you push, you puddle up the filler metal, which is not good. He always said when welding with stick or MIG don't do anything fancy, other than when you do a vertical weld, then you have to do the backwards z motion. Always pull your welds. At 45 degrees, slowly pull , left to right. Unless you are vertical welding then keep your hand in one position, and move the stinger from left to right with your wrist, then right to left, then left to right, performing a slow backwards z motion, traveling from bottom to the top of the work piece. On vertical welds, you never pull the stick/stinger off the weld until you need to change rods or need a break. You continuously weld the backwards z motion until you burn your rod up. The most important things when welding, is penetration and tieing your welds together. When all else fails follow the blueprints. Farm welds can be 1 inch stitch welds unless you need something to be air/water tight.

Paul, In welding school we was taught to push the Mig weld and keep the gas out in front of the puddle for a better shield. And by pushing the weld it preheats the metal to give you better penetration. And never stop on a corner, always weld around a corner. This will give you a water/air tight corner, plus it helps eliminate any chance for a crack… If you are Mig welding a vertical surface you always want to run the weld up hill and keep the gas out in front of the puddle. Never run a down hill vertical Mig weld. You get very little penetration, and it will usually fail over time. if you are Tig welding you always want to let the gas blow on the weld after you stop for 3-5 seconds. This will also help prevent cracking at the end of the weld. I’m sure someone will tell me I’m wrong, but I passed many a welding test. I even taught welding for a while.

Old welder, here, pulling the wire generally puts less heat into the work, providing less penetration, pushing enables you to control heat and penetration, oscillation left to right ,and travel speed, make differences too. Play and experiment! Many people struggle with almost every other type of welding, but excel at the "squirt gun"!

I was thinking the same thing. I’ve heard horror stories about car batteries exploding due to welding nearby. I know this one was not grounded to the trailer at the time, but I’m thinking it only takes one time to cause severe damage. I've worked in manufacturing for 27 years. When I went through weld training they told us that you're supposed to push with a wire welder. Unless you are using flux core or hard facing wire. They also don't recommend weaving with a wire welder. Take it for what it's worth. It's just what I was taught at work.
@mattturner72382 жыл бұрын
I was taught by a Lincoln Electric instructor. As Earl and others also mentioned with gas shielding (MIG,TIG) you push, that's the gun tip and electrode angled towards what you are about to weld. The gas cloud should cover the area to be welded ahead of you. With stick and flux core wire "no gas" ( they leave slag to chip off) you pull or drag as others call it. Pulling is the gun and or electrode point towards what you have already welded. Also as others stated penetration and prep are key. Good bevels and good gaps give the best chance for full penetration strength. Remember the base metal should fail before the weld does. If lives depend on it you should be testing the your process ( A.K.A. certification or X-ray)

Professional welder here. Pushing is the best but often sideways is easier but just turn it going slightly pushing. Mostly i hold it fairly neutral but always a little in a pushing direction. Pulling is for electrodes or when you have to fill a gap, in that case lower the amps and up the wire a bit. The time it takes to have the gap filled it brings enough heat for a good burn but should keep it cold enough to stay ahead of gravity.

Wow Paul I guess you've never seen a battery blow up? I welded next to one 20 years ago and it knocked me 20 feet away and out cold, my cousin woke me up with my clothes melting from battery acid . The gas that battery puts out will open that thing up like it had a grenade inside it. I freaked out when you started welding on top of that battery.

I’m a pusher, puller, sideways, gun upside down (lol) welder. I do what I need to do for what I’m given. I generally, with mig, push. There are times you need to drag your puddle, perfect example is corners.

I worked with a boilermaker when I first used a mig welder. I was told to push .You can push in any direction ,just change the angle of the tip. Opposite of stick welding.

+1 For the Princess Bride clip. Nice save. 🤣

push pull side, etc. As long as you maintain a proper torch angle it doesn't matter. 22 years of welding I haven't had one break yet. Keep up the good work.

I've been a fab guy for a lot of years, I mostly push a mig with gas. Better gas coverage over the arc. That said, for penetration, doesn't matter. Do what is easiest. For Flux core or stick you should drag. Hope that helps!

Paul, your channel is my #1 go to KZbin listening whenever I'm working on something. I have heard every single one of your videos at least 3 times. Sadly I haven't seen everything I've heard but I'm more than happy to to hear it a couple two, three more times.

Nice work on the Loft with the lumber you and your Dad milled! The Tire Machine and Balancer looks pretty sweet and will come in very handy! Sorry for the loss of you Dad.

I learned my self too, push pull sideways and any hot meltie steel thing that fits the job as long as it holds and you know it’s never going to break.

If there is slag you drag. Always push solid wire. Keeps the shielding gas ahead of your puddle.

Paul when I weld and pick witch way I want to go with the magic waund!!! Like if I have a bigger gap to fill I will push so that I get a bigger puddle!! And if I want he weld to not build up to we’re I would have to do a bunch of grinding i will push away to help the bead lay much flatter!! All depends on what I’m welding!! Oh and I see that we also have the same drill press!! I definitely love mine!!
