Paul's knowledge and mechanical abilities applied over a life time are priceless. Things get dumped because people lack the skills and patience to dive into a repair and it's just easier to buy a new one. I have an old weed whacker in my shed, a nice gas one that Paul could no doubt have running in no time. I just look at it and walk away. Sigh...

New carburetors are cheap on Amazon. It’s just two nuts holding it on, a throttle cable, and a couple of fuel lines. Try to start it like Paul did, spray a bunch of brake cleaner near the intake, if she fires slap a new carb on. Give it try

Around here if it hits the dirt it is property of the dump. On the only occasion that I was able to accompany my Father-in-law to the local dump I spotted a particular bicycle in the bed of a truck waiting in line next to us to enter the dump. I followed the truck with my eyes until we both were in the dump and asked them if I could have the bicycle before it touched the dirt. They agreed and I took it from their truck to ours. The dump watch man gave me the stink eye and I thought it was hilarious. I still have that bicycle, a first gen. GT Mach One.

Next time you replace fuel lines come about an inch or so from the end of the line and cut a long bevel in it, take some oil of some sort and lube the line, stick the bevel end through the hole reach in with pliers and zip it on through. It's a lot easier and quicker than "gouging holes" 👍🏻

I run a piece of mechanics wire backward thru the tank and out the filler neck. Then trim the hose on an angle, put the filter clunk, on the back end, push the hose up the wire and pull the wire up until the hose peaks thru the hole; grab wire and hose and pull them through.

Haven't seen one of those dumps or tips as we call them in Australia for many years where you just back up and dump everything. I'm California, we have a sorting area for residential and small loads, commercial or bulky items go up to the tipping area. Still gets sorted out by material up there, just bigger piles and more spread out. Metal, glass, plastic, cardboard, concrete, drywall, woods with paint, unpainted, and redwood are the categories I'm remembering off hand. The only thing I've ever actually dumped into the non-usable tipping pile was a 25 year old couch. Dump is a trip though. Have definitely found some good stuff while there.

Last week I got myself a DR Trimmer/Mower that someone set out on the curb for the trash man to pick up! As a kid growing up in the Midwest I used to love watching the DR infomercials. I had to push mow (no self-propelled) over an acre and the DR Trimmer/Mower looked like it would make that job fun. I spent about three hours working on this one, fixing a broken throttle, seized pulleys, and corroded carb, and now it runs like a champ. I even got my younger brother to mow my yard with it by telling him how awesome the DR Trimmer/Mower is. Sometimes childhood dreams do come true!

I know people throw away perfectly good stuff. For example the other day I was at work drove past four commercial size battery somebody had abandoned on a rual Highway. I said to myself those are $13 a piece as course so I stop and picked up all four. When I got home I discovered that two of them had a crack in the casing the other two had 11.9 volts charge them both up. Let them rest and they both have 12.6 V three weeks later. So I got $300 worth of Good batteries and 2 cores at 13 bucks a piece

Those black and orange pallets belong to the Post Office-grab them and drop them off at your local office if you get the chance. We appreciate keeping equipment in circulation!

I do believe the song you were singing @8:58 while you were fixing the weedwhacker is "It's Too Late" by Carole King. Great tune from the early 70's.

In 2016 when I was hard up finding a job taking care of my Dad through cancer treatments, I made a ton of money in my '84 Dodge D150 picking up old lawn and garden equipment left out for trash.

Pro tip . When installing fuel lines cut hose end at a long angle and you will have a tail to grab with pliers . Works every time.

Paul always always!!! wear safety glasses when using a weed eater. I did about the same thing you did, just trying it out for a minute, and wham into my eye with a rock. I “always” used safety glasses when weed-eating but just testing a minute I was going to be fine. I was just about to go to an overnight job when I did it, boss was not happy, out of work for a week, and hundreds of dollars out my pocket. Keep safe wear eye protection. Really like the channel

Pro tip: when welding on a camping trailer, always have a hose at hand. If you start a fire, you have 30 seconds to put it out before it is beyond control.

Got a free roadside snow blower last fall. Reconnected the wire to the safety shut off and it fired right up, looks like it's never been used. It's amazing what people will throw out.

I'm still using my parents old craftsman weed wacker that's at least 30-40 years old. Had a clogged fuel hose from old gas, new hose new fuel filter, spark plug and it's been running great the past 5 years.

When I and my siblings were youngsters, we never had a "new" bicycle. My father would bring home old bikes from the dump and rebuild them like "new" for our birthday or whatever. Dad's bikes were always shiny and new looking when he was finished working on them so it didn't matter to us kids.

Randell is a good man. Deserves a Fab Rat weed wacker, although I’m surprised Paul didn’t turn it into a weed crawler.
