Just this week I saw some battletech pictures posted on Facebook from a game club in Israel and they were using your terrain!

Turns out there was a glitch in the system which is why the release wasn’t approved on Wargame Vault. The issue has now been resolved by their friendly staff and the hills are live on the site! www.wargamevault.com/product/437294/Papercraft-3D-Hex-Hills I’m deleting the Dropbox folder as it was just a temporary workaround. The files are free on Wargame Vault. Leave a comment or review there if you feel like it, and thanks for the response and ideas thus far!

I love the thought of these, and I'm likely to get a bunch printed up on some card stock from my local printshop. Yeah it'll double the price of em, but I think it'll be worth it for the newbie intro games I'll inevitably run. A few quick thoughts. First off was gluing a nickel or penny on the bottom of em to give a little weight. I love your idea of photocopying the map to use as a template, but I have a better one for you. Either trace that shape after you cut it out and use that for the bottom or simply make 2 copies. Then use the copy (or second copy) to put on top of the finished product. That way you have the hex number, and artwork from the map visible on the tops of your terrain that you've custom made for the map. A few graphic design considerations if you want to improve future releases: You worry about wasting space on paper. This is fair, especially for people printing at the office or using a service like I intend to. But at some point the extra terrain hexes could also be considered a waste of ink for those who print it at home. Maybe include versions with and without. For the concerns about different size of papers, I don't know what software you're using but generate files to fit a 210mm x 279.4mm canvas (or 8.27 inches x 11 inches if your software handles fractions of inches better than fractions of millimeters). This is the smallest dimension from both A4 and Letter. When set to print at 100% the image should fit perfectly on either sheet of paper with only the smallest of white margins on your end. Great work here, these are very clever. I look forward to conscripting some friends after I make a staples run so we can craft a couple dozen of each of these heights

Thank you very much for your insightful comment! Lots of stuff I never considered there. When I get around to updating them with new textures, I’ll certainly mention your suggestions. I’m no graphic designer - these were simply bodged together on Canva. It’s why I’m hesitant to release the templates themselves for people to mod… Many would be horrified to see how they actually work, lol

A blank template would be amazing, we could all add our own textures!
@almostgoodvariant Жыл бұрын
This is a great idea. I’ll give it some thought at some point - it’s not quite as simple as just putting the templates out there due to how I made them and because of the measurements having to work when printed out.

That’s the next texture I have planned. I tried making green hills earlier but just grass or something didn’t look right vertically. Probably will try like a dark/grey rock on the sides and a grassy top.

thick paper, this is a better option than 3d printing for me.
@ManuelPombeiro Жыл бұрын
You may improve your template idea by doing a second copy of the template, cut each hex separately and glue them on top of the respective hex/hill. That way you have on top of each hill exactly the terrain that is on the map.

Those are excellent! I look forward to printing these out. With a large family (read expensive) a big draw for me getting into BT with my kids is the cost of entry. While tgere is some fantastic 3d terrain availed I can't justify dropping $200US on plastic terrain. This will be perfect for my family to play on, & I am really thankful the algorithm fed me this.

check out the new version he just made! the forest hills are GREAT! also if you're really on a budget he made blank ones that will really save you on your ink... just buy some pencil crayons and draw on it. or if you got paint left over from painting all your mini's. im sure once dried will get it a little bit extra stability! might wanna paint them after tho. honestly tho its paper so feel free to use your little brothers finger paints.
@TheNerubin Жыл бұрын
Cool idea. While i am currently thinking about 3d printing Hills like that, the ones i have so far still take quite a while to print and then they still need painting. Maybe i will create a set of your hills with weights at the bottom to stabilize them and some styrophome block inside to give it some strength. Maybe an idea for the future: woods also have hight, normaly level 2 i think and smoke columns and fires also could benefit from a 3d representation. These all would be more difficult as they only offer partial cover and so they would be best if they dont cover the entire volume.

They are lovely and easy to build, good work. Definitely I would not use the same texture on vertical walls in order to avoid "color noise". I would use a darker ground texture and so it will be easier to see the top and more appealing
@almostgoodvariant Жыл бұрын
I did actually originally have different ground textures but got frustrated as I couldn’t make them look like they fit the wall textures using my limited editing skills. Then I just went with the same texture everywhere, kinda forgetting why I wanted a separate ground texture in the first place. In any case, you have a great point there and I will definitely give this some more thought in future updates! Thanks!

@@almostgoodvariant WOW! that forest terrain one is SICK looking! Well now i might just have to waste the ink :P But yeah the blank ones are great! you can draw/paint on them if you really want. someone wants to have it match their terrain, in our hobby? they'll take the time. Also i found using the single tile as a template to cut out a cardboard hex to glue to the bottom before closing the top really made it durable. for how little they weight the extra bottom weight helps its stability as well as make the bottom perfectly flat. i was thinking of using insulating foam in a can to fill it up before closing it. i'll show you the results when i try it.
