Showing us what goes wrong is so incredibly valuable for horse people who don't know yet. And it's even MORE important to see how to calmly get your horse past the fear. The Suffolks are really impressive, gotta be honest.

Good old Bill! When they were pulling it sometimes looked like he was doing most of the pulling the wagon and Duke was just running to keep up. But when you were unhitching them from the wagon Duke was doing his share of breathing hard. Never, ever, expected Duke to be spooky!
@Brauelle4 ай бұрын
I love this video! At 1:04:05 Brenda is close up to Duke while pulling and it looks like Duke is high stepping, almost prancing, his head is straight and not moving while pulling the load. If you look at Bill's legs and body motion, it's just another day of pulling... But Duke looks like he is saying "Look at me, I'm pulling a load of logs!" Towards the end at 1:08:50, when Jim is driving them one handed, I love how Bill just turns right towards the trailer, he knows where he needs to go and that it's quitting time... Or time for some yummy snacks...

I used to have a North Swedish draft horse and he was as calm as can be 😇 One day we were out riding a trail that we have done at least 50 times before, when he suddenly jumped in fear 😱 ...the neighbor had changed his mailbox from a green one to a blue one 📫 and it was apparently very scary 😂

Jim, I love that story! I almost left one of my kids at the grocery store because she wanted something and I told her no, she threw a fit, we got in the car and was starting to drive off, she decided she wanted to go home and not stay at the store. she came running across the parking lot like a bear was chasing her, never threw at fit in a grocery store after that! Now they'd throw you in jail for child abuse!

Hi Jim & Brenda, Well done both of you, a great podcast that shows with experience comes solutions for most things that can go sideways during a working day. He's prepares the best he can and reacts to all situations and resolves the problems. Duke is easy going but he's no Deadhead. I agree with Jim he'll make a great pulling horse with lots work on the farm and the woods. Bill did great supporting Duke. Jim's correct he's got more control of a team of horses from the fore cart seat vs on the ground .

He'll sleep and think about his trip to the woods and how he got safely home, and each day he'll gain more confidence. Jim, tomorrow is another day, keep at him. Yes, usually the most troublesome end up the best horses, because they use their bright little brains trying to figure how to get out of it. Then later, that same brain is totally in tune with yours. Good work on "The Monster". It looked like the underlying training was holding. As you said, Duke was turning well and when you would tell him to stop, that worked even despite things. It can be said of Zippy that he doesn't mind water. Duke sailed through the wet spot as well. When you loaded into the trailer, Duke was outside. We think of load-into-a-trailer, and he was on the outside, listening to a whole bunch of clatter, not what is necessarily trained-for. Thank you for this video, it was interesting and it was soothing out in the woods.

Nice video. The horse loggers II used out in Montana are completely different. Steep country. No carts. Single horse. The logger would sharpen the butt end, use a choker, and ride on the log when he could. When I came up on a root or a rock, the horse knew how to stop, and while puttiing a little pulling pressure on, he'd rock back and forth and th elog would walk up over the obstruction. The logger hardly talked once they started out with the log. Very impressive, as are your methods.

I used to give sheepdog commands to my wife whenever she helped me in the paddock (she wasnt overly impressed lol)

Hi Brenda, I notice Bill's high step also. It is amazing how high his back legs can go. Poor Duke, sometimes learning can be so hard. You would think with all the farm machines at home and the noise they make he would be comfortable with another machine. He has had a busy day, riding in the trailer, hearing the chainsaw noises, and working next to the monster. I wonder if he thinks the monster and the noise of the chainsaw are one big monster. He was looking around at the excavator when you were using the chainsaw. Very interesting and the filming was great.

I enjoy your videos. I am reminded of an experience I had with draft horses. Many years ago now, I was on a trail crew in Yosemite National Park in California. At one point, two huge draft horses were used to drag two long I-beams up a long trail with many switchbacks. They possibly gained 6-700 feet in elevation. I recall the big horses pulling mightily to pull the I-beams, which were used to span a small creek that crossed the trail. The bridge abuttments were already built with dry stone masonry. The horses were tan, like your Belgians.
