When Katsumoto asks the fate of the 300 at Thermopylae and Algren says they died to the last, Katsumoto's grin is one of my favorite moments.

To die in an otherwise victorious battle that changes the course of history is perhaps the second greatest type of victory a warrior like Katsumoto can ask for. The greatest would be to die in a hopeless battle and still win the war because your sacrifice was that powerful. Katsumoto's death in this battle was infinitely more powerful than his survival would have been. If they had won and captured or even killed Omura, the humiliation for the Japanese government would have been immeasurable. Without Omura there to be a political bastard, the young Emperor could be tricked into signing even more deeply unfavorable treaties. Had he lost and retreated, the last war cry of the samurai would have been silenced by Katsumoto's echoing shame. Had he been captured, it would have been confounded by the various humiliations Omura would inflict upon Katsumoto before killing him. But by dying in this battle, by going out on HIS terms, nobody else's, charging into a hopeless battle with weapon in hand and a battle cry in his throat, his message was infinitely louder than his defeat could have been. He just needed Algren to carry that message to the Emperor. The Spartans at Thermopylae had a similar situation. They made the Persians pay so dearly that they bought the rest of Greece enough time to muster up their armies. Also, the battle at Thermopylae actually had a few thousand Greeks, up to 4,000. After they were outflanked by the goat path, Leonidas commanded all non-Spartan forces to retreat and vowed to protect their retreat. 1000-1500 other Greeks stayed behind along with the 300 Spartans, and they were, to a man, slaughtered. Total losses put the Greeks at around 2,000, including the first few days of battle, and 20,000 Persians. Now, 20,000 is only 2% of 1,000,000, but modern estimates actually put the Persian force at up to 300,000, so that 20,000 is suddenly nearly a tenth of your force wiped out for what was barely a dent into the combined Greek military. 10 Persians for every dead Greek. So imagine their terror when they rocked up to Plataea and saw ~100,000 Greeks staring back at them.

I think the self stabbing (seppuku), which is not only stabbing, it's also moving the blade from left to right to slice up the belly, is to simulate the worst possible death you can have on the battlefield. It's done to show, that the samurai can endure the pain and suffering, and was not fleeing from the enemy to avoid such a death. Chopping his head off is done as act of mercy, to show he has suffered enough to prove his point.

Well, it only has a 66% at Rotten Tomatoes, 55% at Metacritic, and a 7/10 at IMDb. It had a production budget of $140M, yet only grossed $110M in the US and Canada. So yeah, it’s criminally underrated, IMO.

I think the nature of progressive politics is that of destructive youth minded revolution and rebellion, I have never witnessed preservation ever enter a progressives mind. The idea that Conservative society never progressed is non sense because the influence of trade and conflict with other nations in the history of ethnic nations added specific cultural influences in art and technology to them over time. I am not convinced that loud Cultural Revolutionary political personalities like those that caused the French Revolution or the American Cultural Revolution can be convinced to spare destroying anything because they don't like to listen to their elders who they seem to think they are so much more intuitively smarter than. The concept of all inclusivity of everything from art work to one's own gender identity these days will not allow for impressive new creations of structured "conservative" style art/music/architecture to be formed like conservative historic societies made. Progressive upstarts and activists think real human society started with their ideology and pop art, but the human race under countless civilizations and empires built up structured mature rich styles of art and architecture of their societies that can be identified thousands of years later for their form and the influences from the select other cultures who influenced their style even through conflicts. If progress was meant to be for the better then it would by nature be a much more conservative limited/controlled mature thoughtful act rather than spawned most often from destructive revolution and aggressive emotional mob activist politics which seems to catch the imaginations of individuals especially young people better than anything Conservative does. Personally I find progressive politics to be immature youth popular but lacking in thoughtful mature personal argument substance rather than what talking point arguments has been given to them by ideological mentors. If woke people came to this village they would be all over them for not using non binary pronouns or any number of other sins.

I was more than skeptic when I saw Tom Cruise was going to star a movie called The Last Samurai. Having practiced martial arts for decades, I had a great respect for Bushi-do (Japanese way of the warrior), but I'm glad I watched the movie. It has become one of my favorites of all time. You don't have to apologize for your words and reactions. I think they are great. In my opinion, the problem is with YT. They want to control language, creators and content and have everybody under one cookie cutter format. I think it is absurd, but sadly there is no open competing platform where we could all move to, so they take advantage of it and we have to deal with their rules.

for those who dont know, Katsumoto's last line "they are all perfect" is also the last line in his poem that he was writing. Japanese poems, at least the most famous one - haiku, is a poem that goes on 3 lines with the first having 5 syllables, the second having 7 syllables, and the last line has 5 syllables. he does tell algren in the movie the first two lines in his poem and was struggling to find the last one

When Tom Cruise first arrives at the Samurai village, the "fever" he has is withdrawals from alcohol. He drank to stop remembering what he had done in the war. The samurai wouldn't let him continue being an alcoholic, so his body started being overwhelmed by withdrawls/remembering.

The film, even if it doesn't seem like it, is based on reality. The film depicts the Satsuma Uprising in 1877 led by Takamori Saigó. The battle at the end of the movie is the "Battle of Shiroyama". Captain Algren is also supposed to represent a real character. He is based on Jules Brunet, a French soldier who was hired to train Japanese soldiers. Brunet eventually fought alongside the Tokugawa Shogun. I also recommend the song Sabaton- Shiroyama.

There is great cinema productions coming from all over the world - Korea, India, and Scandanavia are just a few ... but what Hollywood put out in the 1990s and 2000s has such universal appeal and incredible story telling that a Romanian woman like Bisscute can get so immersed in this type of movie says a lot. 14:35 Seppuku is the ritual suicide of a defeated or shamed samurai. As a samurai cannot bear the shame of defeat, they take their life to retain their honor. A battlefield seppuku like in the movie uses whatever blade is available, and requires the samurai to plunge the blade into their left abdomen, and cut left-to-right, hopefully damaging internal organs or the abdominal aorta. There is a kaishakunin, usually someone very close to the samurai or, in this case, the highest ranking samurai on the field of battle, that performs the kaishaku, or ritual beheading of the samurai. Some rituals of seppuku also have the blade turned vertical after the horizontal cut then thrust upwards with hopes of hitting the heart or one of the major arteries, although the most brutal form of it is jumonji giri (literally "cross cut") where the samurai makes the left to right cut, then pulls the blade out, turns it vertically, and then plunges it back in, cutting up and across the original cut to make a cross that looks like the plus ( + ) sign. Jumonji giri was mostly reserved for the most heinous of crimes that could still be absolved through seppuku, or when the samurai had no kaishakunin to behead them. The kaishakunin was to strike when the samurai had finished their cut, or were in danger of showing pain or crying out in pain. The kaishaku in the movie is actually a pretty bad one, as the head came completely off. A properly done kaishaku will cut the spine, most of the neck, both arteries and the trachea, but leave the muscles and skin on the front of the neck intact so the head will flop down into the chest. A full beheading like the one in the movie was reserved for criminals that were to be executed and they had no honor to maintain

Answering the question about the long hair: The mage, the topknot hair style actually serves as a "cushion" to the helmet not keep scratching your head. So, there is a reason for the long hair, also the "bald" shaved upper part of the head.

this movie was inspired by the story of a French general named Jules Brunet, who embrassed the rebellion and fought as a samurai. The first and only French samurai of history. Brunet is buried now at the père lachaise cemetary in Paris.

Saigo Takamori is known as the Last Samurai of Japan. He lived from 1828 to 1877 and followed the path of the samurai, eventually leading reform in the Meiji govern- ment and dying for his cause. Hayashi is also regarded as the last Daimyo of Jouzai, who fought in the Boshin war until 1868 and lived until 1941. The Battle of Shiroyama in 1877 was fought between the Imperial Japanese Army and the last 500 remaining members of Saigo Takamori's contingent of samurai warriors.

It is interesting to see what parts of the movie get to the viewers. A lot of people cry when everyone is being shot at the end, but they gloss over reactions from the enemy soldiers who kowtow to show their deep and solemn respect. Your understanding of that moment really stands out. Kudos.

I'm sure you take movie choices from your Patreon polls, but for suggestions on what you might want to make for poll choices: Tom Cruise movies, I think the best are this one of course, A Few Good Men, Oblivion, Edge of Tomorrow, Top gun and Minority Report. Saw some other comments recommend Troy and Kingdom of Heaven for non-Cruise movies, but also being Period Pieces, and both of those are amazing movies as well.
