I remember seeing that miniseries when it was a 1981 rerun on PBS. I happened to be in 7th-grade Old World History back then and we were coincidentally studying Claudius and other Roman Emperors at the time. The show was marvelous and really pounded home the fact that he became Emperor because his neurological ticks and physical disabilities made Senators and Patricians believe he would be an easy person to control, but instead, they all found out the hard way that in reality Claudius was a shrewd, clever and ruthless leader by having them all killed before they could act.

What I liked about that series was the way Claudius was portrayed, not as a dim-witted fool but as an intelligent man who was treated like a fool because of his handicaps.

When they made the original Spartacus, they had lots of records of the emperor turning his thumb to indicate life or death, but none said which direction was which. That line “a people should know when they are defeated,” is packed with irony, since those “Germanic barbarians” would later go on to defeat Rome in two of the most crushing military victories in the entire history of warfare, wiping out a combined total of eight Roman legions almost to the last man. In fact, the twenty or so Roman survivors of the battle at Teutoberg were intentionally spared by the Germans, just so there would be someone who could travel back to Rome and tell what happened.

Fathers focus so much on what they'll create and leave behind (and obviously to their sons and daughters) that they forget that once they're gone, their son will SOMEHOW have to take over and hold onto what they've inherited. How on Earth do they expect them to do that if they failed them as a father?

"Bread and circuses" (or bread and games; from Latin: panem et circenses) is a metonymic phrase referring to superficial appeasement. It is attributed to Juvenal (Satires, Satire X), a Roman poet active in the late first and early second century CE, and is used commonly in cultural, particularly political, contexts. In a political context, the phrase means to generate public approval, not by excellence in public service or public policy, but by diversion, distraction, or by satisfying the most immediate or base requirements of a populace, by offering a palliative: for example food (bread) or entertainment (circuses). Juvenal originally used it to decry the "selfishness" of common people and their neglect of wider concerns. The phrase implies a population's erosion or ignorance of civic duty as a priority. This phrase originates from Rome in Satire X of the Roman satirical poet Juvenal (c. 100 CE). In context, the Latin panem et circenses (bread and circuses) identifies the only remaining interest of a Roman populace that no longer cares for its historical birthright of political involvement. Here Juvenal displays his contempt for the declining heroism of contemporary Romans, using a range of different themes, including lust for power and desire for old age to illustrate his argument.
@davestang5454Ай бұрын
It can be more accurately termed "Give the people a full belly and entertainment to distract them from the reality of their daily lives and you win their loyalty". This was not unique to Roman emperors. It has been a tactic employed by rulers throughout history.

Yes, I have been to Rome. At the time people thought this was Russell Crewe’s movie, and in a way it is. The essence of the stoic, upstanding, honourable man. The personification of the masculine ideal, as Biss observes. But at heart he is a boring character. Even messiahs have flaws. In fact this is Joaquin Phoenix’s movie. A weak villain is an interesting villain, and a weak, vain man in a position of ultimate power is a very scary thing indeed, as we have seen (edit: written before Biss said _exactly_ this). I don’t doubt that this movie resonates with women too, and I’d be interested to know why. But I know why this movie strikes a chord with men: they aspire to be Maximus, and they recognise themselves in Commodus. Great film, and a very good, perceptive reaction.

So glad you were entertained. I used to watch this movie every week. That HanZimmer soundtrack is epic. This is based on real stuff. Marcus and Commodus were Caesars. Commodus was a gladiator trained guy. Rumor has a gladiator was his real father. He ruled in Rome while Daddy was out of town. His guards one day tired of him and removed him from office. This is a better version of 1964 FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE. There were lots of gladiator and Hercules type movies around then. Most really cheesy. Keep the faith, babe.
@victore6242 Жыл бұрын
The story of Commodus begins with his father, the Emperor General Marcus Aurelius. Considered one of the Five Good Emperors, he oversaw a period of military domination and domestic peace that made him popular among the Roman people. He was considered a Philosopher King, famous for his stoic wisdom and writings. So in 161 AD, when Marcus Aurelius sired two sons, Commodus and Titus, they had big shoes to fill. This was the first time in almost one hundred years that an emperor had a biological son legitimate for the throne. Even as a young child, Commodus displayed a penchant for cruelty that would carry into his rule later on. One story goes that the young prince once cast a servant into a furnace for drawing a bath that was too cold. It displayed the love of violence that would compel him to compete as a gladiator in the Colosseum when he went on to rule Rome. When his younger brother died, it was clear that young Commodus would be the next to rule the Empire. Despite violence abroad, Rome flourished under the reign of his father. The Roman people were happy to have the son of an enlightened leader as their new Emperor. Little did they know what was in store. In 180 AD, Marcus Aurelius died, and at eighteen years of age Commodus was made Emperor of Rome. Despite the hopes of the citizenry, it soon became clear that the young king was little like his father. Commodus loathed the daily work of administration, and delegated nearly all of his responsibilities to his inferiors. Corruption abounded, as many took advantage of powerful positions with no oversight. Rather than tending to his official duties, Commodus opted to spend his time satisfying his violent and debaucherous whims. He executed people indiscriminately, personally making human sacrifices, faking an attempt on his own life to justify further executions, and even ordered that Rome be burned to the ground. Thankfully this order was ignored. He had a penchant for spectacle, and loved the crowd. Styling himself after the Greek hero Hercules, he fought as a gladiator in the Colosseum, though it was never a fair fight. It was forbidden for the Emperor to come to any real harm in the Colosseum, so he invariably won every bout. In all, Commodus participated in 735 contests as a gladiator, according to the Historia Augusta. With official matters left unattended, and an Emperor dishonoring his title, the Senate conspired to have the Emperor assassinated. They gave the task to the Emperor’s training partner, who carried out the gruesome deed. Declared an enemy to the people of Rome, Commodus’ body was dragged through the city streets and cast into the Tiber river. His name was largely erased from Roman buildings, except for a public bath built in his honor. Today, Commodus is known as the Emperor who fought in the Colosseum, but his legacy is much larger than that. His rule ended years of stability and relative peace in the Empire, and it was almost entirely his own doing. What followed his death was civil war and partisan in-fighting, bringing the Era of the Five Good Emperors to an end.
@phueal Жыл бұрын
Excellent summary. You mention Commodus dishonouring his title; it's worth noting that being a gladiator was considered extremely shameful, they were slaves whose bodies and very lives were being used against their will for the entertainment of the mob, and not something that a free man would ever choose to do. The analogy which the podcast "Totalus Rankium" used for Commodus was like if the US President today chose to ignore his work and instead spent all his time as a porn star.

the only thing I have against a series like that and many similar productions is that they concentrate on the early empire, with few productions ever touching accounts of most of the emperors. It's like covering American history only from 1776 to 1826.

Apollodorus of Damascus, under Emperor Trajan (about year 100 a.D.), build a bridge across the Danube, to unify the new conquered province of Dacia. Imagine how hard it was 2000 years ago to build a 1Km+ long/15m+ wide bridge across the longest European river... And, if they did this on the farthest province, just imagine what they did in Rome, in Costantinopole, in Alexandria... If you have a 5€ bill in your wallet, that aqueduct you can find outside of Nimes in France, it was build by Romans and still stands 2000 years later. I'm overwhelmed by the greatness of that civilization.

Dacia became ROMANIA so that's applicable to this reaction video.

I understand its easier for you being European and knowing Latin, having the roman heritage and all that, but its just so nice actually watching a reactor to this movie understanding whats going on.

If you Google, you can find a website that tells you if a movie has any post credits scenes without actually spoiling them.

Maggots were sometimes used to eat the rotten/infected flesh of open wounds before being treated and bandaged. You give us some trivia, so that's my contribution, lol.

43:34 He was originally supposed to be the one in the final scene buying the little figures in the arena. But before they finished shooting the whole movie, the actor passed away in a bar from a heart attack. Instead of recasting and reshooting the role, they made it where his character dies in the movie.. The actor had a very long career in to movie industry.

I love some of the accuracies of the film, like the story Commodus told about Claudius, concerning the buzzing bees, which really happened.

Oh really? ❤
@martinboyle9163 Жыл бұрын
@@BissFlix I stand corrected! Claudius was very clever and devious and had numerous people assassinated and he had spoiled many plots against his life, but my latest fact check shows that this particular story was invented solely for the film. Yet, it would have been along the lines of something Claudius would have said and done during his reign, so the story on the surface certainly seemed to be factual. Best to you-

ancient roman generals paid their armies from their own pockets. Soldiers' pay was made in three instalments of 75 denarii in January, May and September. Domitian changed the intervals to three monthly and thus increased pay to 300 denarii. Under Severus he raised pay once more to an estimated 450 denarii. Caracalla gave a substantial increase of 50% probably to 675 denarii.

One of the main reasons the Empire collapsed was reckless spending and inflation. Sounds very familiar in 2024.

I'm excited to see you react to Gladiator. It's one of my favorite movies. I hope you enjoy it.
@MrDMF567 Жыл бұрын
Something we see is the Emperor’s thumbs up or down when deciding if a gladiator lives or dies. In real life thumbs down represented the sheathing of a sword so that meant mercy. Since “thumbs up” is a positive sign nowadays, it was changed to not confuse the audience.

Your comments about killing Commodus is close to what happened several times. Claudius the nephew of Caligula was made emperor by the praetorian guard after Caligula was killed. His wife Valencia messalina tried to stage a coup but failed. Later he was poisoned and it was widely believed that his forth wife Agrippina had done it.

Actually the closed fist, or the thumbs down was the emperor sparing someone; the thumbs down meant the gladiator should lay down his sword and live. And the thumbs down was called infectus Pollex which is equivalent to the middle finger in our society.

41:48 Fun fact, the word "tyrant" originally didn't have a bad connotation, it was a morally neutral term. It basically meant an absolute ruler, like a king, who was not elected and didn't inherit the power, but took the power by force. This was not seen as inherently bad in ancient times. Tyrants could be good or bad, depending on how they treated the citizens and how good their policies were. Some extremely influential philosophers, like Plato and Aristotle, didn't like tyrants however, and gave it a negative definition in their writings.
