Just glue rubber to the vise you already own. The wood vise will get weak, that's why the are made of steel!

A complete waste of time in my opinion. Your suggestion is literally on point. Time is money. He could have bought a vise (he already owns) for the time spent building this. Like you said rubber pads. I would use an old conveyor belt.

If the aim is to not mark your wood, you can just put some little wood shims on the metal vise between the metal cheeks and your project. No need to build a whole new vise.
