Thank you for opening up this discussion. I am very senstive around alcohol. I am 51 years old female and I had cut down on my drinking a year before the pandemic and since the pandemic have not had any alcohol and dont miss it at all. I drank heavily in my 20s and cut down in my 30's and then started up again in my 40's. Thinking I am only young once and went out like I was young again. It took a toll on my body not to mention my liver. My dad was an alcoholic and not to go into a long drama about growing up, I am very sensitive. Now I am feeling good, do not miss the next day hangovers and recovery period one bit. I definitely will not be drinking like that again and if I do decide to have a drink, it will be one or 1/2 glass of wine. I thought I would dread being in my 50's and feared getting old when I was young hence why I went drinking to enjoy my youth only to discover now that I didnt enjoy because I couldnt remember what happened the night before! Now, without alcohol I am clear, healthier, and, in touch with my feelings and very grateful for every moment. Life is beautiful without it :)

Chelsea, you are a star ⭐️, well done on your 100 days sober. It can be overwhelming when you’re out and not drinking. The number of repeated stories you hear, the spitting on your face from people up in your face while chatting and the smell of some people’s breath can knock you around. It took me a long time to feel comfortable not drinking with friends at meals or at bars. I changed the way I related to some people, lost some friends and gained others. I also became bored after three hours max and I’ve now learned to not be part of bill splitting for alcohol…no way am I subsidising anyone else’s costs. I also expect your personal goal of achieving the half marathon helped keep you on track as well. You are still young and now experiencing things more mindfully. Thanks for sharing this very personal story with us. Keep living your life as authentically as you are ❤

Im a child of the 60 and 70's. Ive been sober this time coming up on 15 years. Best decision I ever made. I am a member of AA but not everybody has to join AA. You found out a lot of things that are very constructive and to live a good and better life. One thing for sure, if anyone is coming off of alcohol make sure you have hard candy with you or snicker bars! That whole craving sweets thing is for real! It is a physical thing your body goes through. I'm so glad you realized what alcohol was doing to you! I love your videos girl! Peace and Happiness to you! 🤗💜✌

I completely agree with your commentary about balance. Very well said. By today's medical definitions most of us are functioning alcoholics, but I think it's something we are a) socialized to believe is culturally acceptable and b) using as a coping mechanism for depression/anxiety/stress/life/etc. Kudos to you for being so honest in your video and normalizing what most people are grappling with.

I loved this video and it's great you're taking time to examine how alcohol fits in your life!! I stopped drinking two years ago despite never being a big drinker- I am naturally not a drinker, didn't drink til my mid 20s- but ended up spending a few years complying to social pressure at parties. I have pretty negative feelings about alcohol and drunk people due to some tough childhood experiences, so for me it's way easier and more pleasant to just opt out, and I feel WAY better about myself now. I would so encourage anyone who ends up with that specific type of self loathing after a night out to quit and find better things to keep you awake at 4 am :D

I’m in my 30’s and I’ve never drank before. It’s a personal decision I made and have stuck to it, so I don’t really have anything to compare it to but when I see my friends and go out it’s just to catch up and have connections and have fun. I don’t understand drinking really, it never made sense to me… my friends would always end up regretting it and feeling horrible and spending a lot of money 🤷🏻‍♀️

Me too! Well.. actually I’ve had a few of drinks in my 20s but honestly I haven’t had alcohol in like 10 yrs. Honestly I was never into it and I hate the taste. It could be the fruitiest drink and I’d still taste the alcohol. Plus it’s expensive. I don’t like being not in control of my actions either. Sometimes people make you feel like you’re boring because you don’t drink but honestly I’ve just never cared for it! I see it’s appeal to people though. It’s probably a good thing I never liked it though because my family has a huge problem with alcoholism 😬

Hey! So I just found your channel recently. I gave up alcohol almost 3 years ago voluntarily and I live in NYC. I have to say: life is so much better. I still go out and have fun with my friends - I just don't ever forget what happened or forget what I said and have to worry that I said something stupid. No bad hookups or monitoring if I'm "drinking moderately." Life is so much easier. It's really just a scapegoat to say that you can't give up drinking because you're young and live in NYC! Dooo itttt!

I’ve been sober for almost 2 years now. I realized that I started needing a drink with any extreme emotion, so I stepped away. My skin flourished! My mental health, my gut health. Also, I have an auto immune disorder and sobriety made such a huge difference! It can be difficult but eventually you get used to just ordering water or a soda on nights out and people stop being surprised by it.

As I wrote in your last sobriety video, I quit drinking entirely for 6 years. It really changed my life positively in numerous ways. I've gone back to drinking 12 beers on the weekends, but NO hard liquor. If you're able to regulate your consumption to a minimum, alcohol can be a nice, occasional release from normalcy.

New Subscriber! I loooove your channel, and I admire your moving to NYC in the way that you did, with no/little money, etc. I am 46 years old and have done that myself (but not to NYC) more than once here in Canada. On the topic of drinking vs. sobriety, I personally chose to stop drinking a few years ago as I have terrible inflammation linked to diagnosed health issues that I have had for over 25 yrs. Suffice to say it was not a difficult decision, and I feel much better as a result. Financially I just cannot justify going out for drinks at my age, I'd rather save the money or buy something I need. No judgement on others, as I had my wild party days dancing on the speakers, back in the early 1990s !!!! I really enjoy your videos...looking forward to more!

Congratulations Chelsea on completing your challenge. I love all your videos. My thoughts on your challenge: most people who dont have a problem with alcohol ever find themselves challenging themselves to abstain from alcohol. This is something to think about. Normal drinkers never pose these sort of dry challenges to themselves or ask these type of questions. As you said, you may not be ready to fully quit now, but be aware that you asking, you be "sober curious " puts you outside of the realm of a normal drinker.

Congrats!!! I’m 32 days sober because although I didn’t think I had a problem with alcohol, alcohol really started effecting my sleep(hello peri menopause) and the day after not sleeping I was a miserable mess. I have found 2 non alcoholic beers that I like but no wine or drinks yet. I’m sure if I go out for a fancy night out with a signature cocktail, I’ll have it but it’s definitely a trade off.

Awesome vlog! I stopped drinking last July. I did that to stop smoking. I"ve never been a regular smoker but I always did when I drank. Anyway, I had a significant b-day so I had to lay it down and knew it'd be easier without alcohol. I figure I'll abstain from alcohol until I am sure I won't smoke. Stopping both hasn't been too difficult really but one without the other has no appeal. And that sugar thing IS A BEAST!

The last time I actually got drunk was a New Year’s party like 10 years ago. My two friends ended up driving me back to their place so I could sleep it off and I think I remember needing them to stop a couple of times along the way. After that I’ve never drunk to the point of getting drunk. Once I can feel myself getting a little tipsy is when I stop. I lived in Japan for 4 years, and they have a big drinking culture so it was difficult to keep myself to one or two drinks when I went out with coworkers, but now that I’m back in the States I normally only have a drink or two whenever I’m with friends, and that’s just because I’m an introvert and the alcohol helps me be more engaged in conversations.

I hit a certain age and could no longer process alcohol. (The same thing happened to my father). My experience is one of mourning. I was a wine guy, and that whole hobby is gone, now. I don't enjoy food as much, and find a lot of social situations -- most notably dinner parties and sporting events -- interminably dull without alcohol. I was never a big drinker, so maybe that's why I haven't noticed any improvements in my life. Instead, I'm astonished by how bereft I continue to feel.

Congratulations on reaching 100 days! That's really huge! And also a great takeaway as well--you can still enjoy the things you enjoy, but you have more of appreciation on what exactly you like about the experience. Enjoying with intention! I kind of did something similar with coffee several years ago. There was one point I was so exhausted all the time, I'd drink 6+ cups of crappy coffee a day with a TON of sugary creamer, just to stay awake (later learned that I have ADHD and coffee is actually a suppressant for me). It really wasn't healthy. I love coffee, though, so I made a deal with myself that I could have one *really good* cup of coffee a day, using expensive, fresh-ground beans, half and half, no sugar... and never looked back. I still enjoy a good cup of coffee in the morning without overdoing it. And I look forward to it every day! ☕

Slowly drink it and the effect is fine. I also think there are so many influences all around me. I just try to be careful. Now, it’s not so hard. Plus seeing others who continue to drink past one drink ~ is a show for me to be glad I’m not going to have regrets the next day. Plus, drunk friends are annoying 😩

Sober NYer here! Congratulations for your 100 days! Had started a one year no alcohol challenge, for a similar reason; I am a performer and I wanted to see what benefits I could get to cut on alcohol. My rules are to drink only a good quality champagne ( one glass only), for special occasions but never on a professional circumstances (only 4 champagne glasses so far since Jan 8th…). I really miss a glass of quality wine with good meals, or when at restaurant, but so far, really rewarding to appreciate my will power, and doesn’t change a bit of my social life. Still ordering drinks, as there are more and more options, including virgin [fill the blank]. I haven’t found non alcoholic wine that convinced me … but , from althetic brewing co. did!

This is interesting. Couldn't be more distant to my reality though. I'm 22 years old and I've never drank before. No one in my family drinks (my grandpa was an alcoholic for decades before he stopped and it almost destroyed the family, so ever since then drinks are not allowed in our houses, and this was before I was born). I don't intend to consume alcohol in the future, can't see any benefits, only potential disasters... I struggle a lot with daily life as is, I really don't need anything else to complicate my health even more. There is no space to party or go out in my life, although part of me wanted that life style for a long time, I simply am not able to do it, if I was to try it, it would be very painful. I'm in my second semester in medical school, wich I worked hard for years to get in... I'm living alone for the first time too. If I wanted to go out, drink and party, the time should be now, but I can't. My health is really delicate, I'm sick all the time, and I had been depressed for half a decade prior to this. I still get frequent episodes from past traumas, and I know I can never let my guard down, or I'll fall into depression again real quick. I need at least 8h-9h of sleep each night to be able to survive the days (wich is very hard to do in medical school) and it's still very hard to get through them even sleeping well. I frequently get sick and it takes me days to recover each time. I'm always having to manage that with doing well in classes, being a doctor always has been my dream and I don't want to be a bad one, I want to be useful. I cannot afford to be hangover, can't imagine what it would do to my mind and body.. I had tried to go to parties before since I moved here, but the eminence of them triggered my trauma response and I couldn't go. It makes me a little sad, but if I think rationally, it would add nothing to my life.. I don't even have many friends that like to party, most of my dearests friends are introverts or too busy in their lifes to be able to go to these things. So I wouldn't really be missing anything. Anyway, its interesting to see another point of view. Also, congratulations on the editing, I find your videos so soothing and relaxing! 😊

I did Dry January somewhat successfully this year for the first time. I did have a drink on a few occasions but I'd say I didn't drink for 80% of the month, which I thought was a good start. I live in south america, which means it's now summertime and frankly january is the worst month to be sober because we're all at the beach on holidays, so I'm proud of myself for what I achieved. I also noticed that after january was over, I found myself being ok with not having a drink a lot more often than I used to. The pandemic and working from home really made my alcohol consumption increase significantly (pretty sure I'm not alone here), so in a way I feel like I'm "unlearning" this behavior.

I applaud you for going the 100 days - awesome! 🙌 I actually never drank until I reached my 30s. Never partied or went out drinking in my 20s, never really saw the need. However, once in my 30s I decided to be more social and try having drinks whenever I met up with people. It was an awakening for me, of sorts. I love having a drink here and there - but never to excess. I’ll have a drink on a Friday night, and sometimes two. But never three. I never get hungover the next day, because I mostly drink high-end whiskies neat. Also: my rule is to only have a drink when I’m happy about something. If I lost my job, or a family member died, or I broke up with someone - the last thing I feel like doing is having a drink. For me, having a drink is only to celebrate or unwind after a long week at the office.

There are way too many benefits for sobriety than not. Financial, physical and mental aspects seem to be the winners. If you can have one every now and then when you feel like it, and not because of the situation that you’re in, then you’ve conquered any need for alcohol. True freedom comes from making the choices that are right for you and for you alone, not because of someone/something else. I still have my vodka in the freezer and I still feel like a double every now and then. Not because I’ve had a bad day but because I actually want a drink. And it tastes so different now. It’s so enjoyable. You are doing great.

That said, I know we all love a glass or two to ‘switch off’ but it’s training the brain to just dump that habit.

it's wild how similar my experience is to yours. from the social anxiety flaring up to the sudden need for diet coke. i did 90 days in 2022 after frankly going on a bender in late 2021. a lot of post lockdown freedom and pent up stress i think. i enjoyed it but it was hard. every time i went to a party my false confidence was gone. didn't lose weight either and i wanted to! recently slipped back into drinking too much (ironically after a major accomplishment) and taking more of the approach after a 2 week hard reset to really just drink when i'm with friends and not make it about the alcohol and getting drunk. so far it's worked, but who knows. clearly i don't have the healthiest relationship with alcohol and i clearly use it as a crutch for anxiety and shyness.

Hi Chelsea it’s a Friday night in Massachusetts and I hopped into bed to scroll through YT for a few minutes until I felt sleepy. Uhhhhh it’s been one hour and 49 minutes of ChelCall binging ! Christ on a bike you are someone I enjoy hanging out with! At the end of every video I have comments but never post them cuz, why ? Not like it would matter but then you said you enjoy reading comments so, to give back to you some of the joy I feel from spending time with you I will spend some time giving you some of me. Lol. Sounds creepy. No it’s just the nature of internet interactions. Ok bye ✌️

My drinking ebbs and flows. There are weeks where I have a glass of wine every night and there are weeks where I do not drink anything. It really just depends on my mood. Although if I go to this one restaurant near me, I almost always get a margarita cause their margarita is delicious.

Wow umm, are we twins? I had an almost identical situation to you--had a bad night of drinking, went temporarily sober (only 40 days), and came to many of the same conclusions you did. Also I'm a virgo (2 days before your bday!) and have been deep in the going out scene, just across the country in LA. I feel like things you said were the exact same things that came out of my mouth afterwards. I really resonated with this and it's nice to see someone else living life on a similar plane! Great vid.

Hi Chelsea! I just found your channel and I think It's very interesting! I live in Europe and here the drink culture is very different, but It depends a lot where you are. I am from the south of Italy and It is very common here not to drink at all when you go out with friends. Most of the times you just get a beer or a glass of wine and that's It. In not unusual getting drunk but It's something you do during "special occasions", like New Years Eve's party, or Carnival, or of course when you go clubbing but to be honest most of people I know go to clubs like once or twice a year. It was way more common to get drunk when we were teens, but It got boring soon, and the hangover is not as easy after you turn 28. But in northern countries It is totally different, and everytime I was around with my friends from Belgium, Ireland, Germany and Czech Republic It was very easy to drink 4 pints of beer every night. But even if I never had much problem drinking all that alchool, after few days I find It kind of boring and unnecessery expensive to do It every single time.

Now I'm good💃🏿💃🏿💃🏿

I’ve been sober 🙏 for over two years now and I have been sober in some cities or circumstances where prior omg I would have gone crazy with alcohol. But I knew if I were to open that door then yeah that’d be a great fun couple of hours but then yeah the following day would be a lost day wasted sick or recovering with more alcohol. It’s not worth it for me anymore. I don’t need to destroy my body like that anymore. I found I deserve a life and alcohol takes that away from us. Good luck with your balance!!! If it works for you enjoy 😉

I’ve never understood the need for it. I was raised by a boomer alcoholic so it left me cold. However I was also in the military and once drank myself into another country. Too me though it’s never been something I pursued I could go out watch live bands and drink coke or I could stick with one beer or get trashed it was all up to my plan or intent. The latter after military was a rare event during my time in service a weekly event

Congrats on the 100 days! I was a slutty bar fly in my 20s and 30s, it was fun, then it got stale. I’m older now and occasionally open a bottle of wine at home or get a cocktail out with dinner. Your body will start to tell you it’s time to settle down and stop unhealthy habits and diet. If you are still wanting to get trashed in your 40s, it’s probably a good idea to seek some help. You will appreciate a healthy liver when you get older.

I get the vibe that you might drink as a way to dopamine-seek? Which would explain why you enjoy the adrenaline rush, and why when you were sober, you sought out other forms of dopamine, by eating sugary foods or making impulsive purchases. It’s not a purely neurodivergent thing, but I have ADHD and I’ve found that I seek dopamine hugely! If I cut out one source of dopamine e.g. coffee, alcohol, yummy foods, it’ll crop up in another area of my life. Ofc, it goes without saying that you know yourself better than anyone, and I’m just some random person on the internet, but that’s just my two cents on the video 😊

I'm in my mid thirties too, and I am coming to the same realization that maybe I don't like drinking that much. 9 times out of 10, I'm like "I just spent a bunch of money to consume poison". And, while I do agree that sitting at the bar is a decent way to meet new people, I'm not sure it's worth having to drink alcohol. Like, it's just not great to develop your social life, or whatever, around drinking. Lately, I've been much more of a cafe person, as lame as that sounds. I'm not interested in a caffeine habit either, so I get some kind of alternative latte (unsweetened matcha, generally). I bring something to do, like a book or magazine, and look up occasionally to see if there's something interesting happening. If somebody is reading something, or working on their laptop, I might be like "what have you got there?" and sometimes it's a conversation. Where I live, people bring their babies and pets to the cafe, so that's cool too.

I just wanted to come back to this video. Because I had written a verrrry long reply, posted it, saw how long it was, and deleted it! So I obviously had something to say about 😂 However, I don't want to make this about me (because it will become a lonnnng story, again ), but know you are not alone for having a complicated relationship with alcohol. I am lucky, because I love tea more than alcohol! And I can crave a nice cup of tea, much more than I ever wanted alcohol. But socially, I find it really difficult! Especially when I'm around people who drink everyday (and don't want to drink alone)or who think/expect me to be the same as I was when I was 27; depressed and messed up. Because I am not that person any more (I am a different kind of messed up now, I am 44, I evolved). I now drink when I want, but I will rarely drink more than 2 or 3 drinks (and really only a few times a year, I hardly ever go out anymore), mostly because having more to drink makes me feel much more vulnerable (and I HATE that that is something I even have to consider!) and I ready need at least a week to recover and where is the fun in that!?😂 So, anyway, good for you for taking the time and conscious effort in to looking at your relationship with alcohol. I think that is never a bad thing! ❤

Well I have a weird relationship with alcohol, I can not have drink for years and then do a binge for one night and then not drink for more years....its the first drink that gets me, one drink and I can't stop until all the drinks are gone....so I don't have the first drink 99% of the time.

I’ve never enjoyed drinking because my body hates it so much. That alcohol after taste makes me want to puke. But when I was young I thought I’d participate because of expectations. Often I’d pretend to drink and just carry a glass around all evening as a prop so people felt like I was experiencing what they were experiencing. I only had one hangover my whole life. One is enough. I’m not into torture. So as I slowly learned (I’m really a slow learner when it comes to being “human”, at least most of it seemed like that until I was about 40 years old and went back to school to study psychology and art therapy) people don’t pay much attention to “me”, they are worried about how they are perceived. It helped me feel okay to just be “me” at a party. I could enjoy other peoples’ company and not worry about feeling judged. Everyone’s just so hard on themselves for the most part. But if you just do “you” you are very unique and interesting because you are being authentic. I enjoy your videos because you are completely unique and authentic on your KZbin show! ❤

I am 34 and stopped drinking alcohol when I was 26. I started drinking when I was 17 years old. I drank whiskey, margaritas, mai tais and of course vodka. I stopped drinking because of the prices. I wasn’t an alcoholic, more of a social drinker. Over these years I found out that I could be using that money for other things and quit for religious reasons too. I don’t put anyone down who drinks and would rather have my Dr. Pepper instead haha!

Just enjoy yourself. Like anything else, do it responsibly and be aware of motivations and consequences. The buzz from alcohol can be soothing and alleviate anxiety at least for that moment. For people like me who are in their heads a lot and struggle to slow down the busy intersection of thoughts and emotions, alcohol helps to relax and release some tension. As you said, just be present and actively enjoy every sip. Most people with self-control will recognise when to stop and start mixing smoothies for a while instead of Vodka RedBull. In your case, living in New York City also brings you an incredible array of bars and restaurants stacked on top of each other which employ some of the best and diverse bartenders with delicious recipes from around the world. Everyone who lives there should take advantage of that at least once in a while.

Alcoholism and problem drinking is not about a lack of self-control.
@henryparka3718
@henryparka3718 Жыл бұрын
@@LillianHenegar Thank you for your feedback. The lack of self-control regarding alcohol use is exactly what it comes down to. People can bring up genetical, physical, psychological and social factors or even poverty and trauma. Ultimately between somebody who doesn't drink alcohol because they don't like the taste of it and somebody who needs medically supervised attention because they are about to kill themselves lies an infinite amount of sips from the bottle. We're not doing them any favors by treating them like cancer patients. Many people who are struggling with alcoholism are the first to admit that taking responsibility for their own actions is the first step to recovery. I tend to agree with that.

This is timely... I was never a heavy drinker but during the pandemic it became something I did a lot to escape, but then it just kept going, and this year I was like yeah this needs to stop. I'm older than you, so I'm definitely too old for this. :D The odd thing was, it gave me a weird community with people who were doing the same thing, but at some point I realized that wanted to stop having those conversations. "Man, work is so stressful and I'm tired of these four walls, time for [insert drink here] BWAHAHA that's life." So, stopped drinking in February and it's been a struggle but mostly trying to convince people that I'm serious. It's embarrassing that it only took 2 years for people to see me as "that girl who likes a good drink" after a lifetime of basically drinking maybe 10 times a YEAR. But, I'm pulling out of severe inflammation and an almost chronic fatigue that I thought had to do with another medical condition. However, I've noticed that my diet coke cravings have SKYROCKETED... it's like I want a different taste in my mouth or something. Thanks for sharing your story, honestly it came at the perfect time to reinforce my resolve, and I appreciate it greatly.
