I was in the Yellow Mountain Anhui province. I twisted my ankle on the hiking and I went to the hospital to check my ankle. X-ray, consultation and I was asked if I want Chinese traditional medicine or Western medicine? For homeopathic treatment, I paid 83 Y including the medicine and taping. I had overseas coverage but for $12.00 dollar, it doesn't worth the paperwork. Everything was done in a hour. If this was in America it may cost $500 to $700 and waiting for hours.

I am a western trained doctor and I can assure you traditional Chinese medicine is Not homeopathic medicine as we know it in the West. The traditional Chinese medicine doctor had to train for 6years followed by specialist training just like western medicine. In the West a homeopathic medic have no such training. TCM includes diagnostic technique, specialized training in massage and manipulation, acupuncture and Chinese herbs that has thousand year's history and knowledge. It a 9:18 lso requires stringent testing, research and certification at university level unlike in the West

A government devoted to serve its people in health care can be seen from how affordable the transport system is throughout China. One has to be mindful China until recently has the world largest population at around 14 billion. China was very poor prior to 1978, but has since grow the economy to be the world no 1 by purchasing power parity definition. When the sick goes to hospital, it is odd that he should be made to wait for an appointment to see a doctor. The necessary delay to be diagnosed and treated by a doctor seems to be the standard process in UK and US. The most affordable cost and the readily convenience of seeing a doctor without undue delay speaks volume about China hospitals caring and in treating patients. It is an unforgivable shortcomings for hospitals to keep patients waiting for treatment for weeks on end at sky high prices.

Doctors don't earn that much in China, whose workload is big, can be around 80 appointments each working day in a busy hospital. It's a very dedicated job. China gov monitors the medicine purchase and represent hospitals to bargin with the medicine companies for a better price. Some people pay for the cost, so the patients don't have to.

an in general they are wayyyyyy more experienced than those in the US at the same pay grade (relatively speaking). considering the lowest ranked intern doctors see more patient in a day than those in the US who does in a year. My mom struggled to get her knee fixed for over 7 years in Los Angeles (The US doctors simply couldn't find the cause of pains), and managed to get it done in less than 15 days in Guangzhou China. The doctors almost immediately knew what was the problem after seeing a couple simple x-ray and blood tests. oh, and the test results come out same day (2 hours to be exact, in contrast to 2 weeks later in the US)
@fredm.7145
@fredm.7145 Ай бұрын
In the U.S. your doctor examines you request any test, and subscribes treatments. That request goes to the insurance company who reviews it and on many occasions will decline the request. You either pay out of pocket or suffer the consequences of not having the biopsy, colonoscopy, endoscopy, medication. You file a lawsuit. They drag it out until your dead. The people declining treatment are not doctors.

We literally started panicking the night before every time worrying we could have missed the morning window to call in. We thought it was only our GP and have been thinking to switch our GP practice. But now i know it seems everywhere is the same. And the reception always ask so many private questioning relating to 'the nature of my call' (in their words). The nurse checked my daughter's temperature right in reception, issued a medical record booklet and booked me instantly to see a doctor, in about two hours we got full report and medicine that costs about 200rmb, even cheaper than what we would have to pay in Australia. When I was a kid in Shanghai the system was not this good, the greatest thing about the public health system is that it keeps improving over the years in a fast speed.

I had two occasions to see a doctor when I was in Chengdu last year. For example, a lesion on my forearm that I had brought with me from Australia got worse. 10 minutes after I arrived at the hospital, I saw a skin specialist who prescribed a treatment which worked, all at minimal cost (which I can't remember, it was that insignificant). On the other occasion, at a cost of RMB48, I saw the doctor twice, had blood and x-ray tests and finally, treatment by a nurse, all done in the space of a couple of hours in a morning. That particular hospital did seem a bit old but certainly it was clean and efficient. The system seems to operate very similarly to the hospital based public system here in Australia but without the long waiting times for non urgent cases. They don't seem to do the triaging of patients to nearly the same extent as our hospitals do.

I am an ED nurse in a public hospital in Australia so I can tell you that the waiting time in your case may be at least 4 hours in ED and may be 6 hours to see a specialist. I was in China in June and got skin rash and swelling following mosquito bites and hot weather, I arrived at the Dermatologists office on the 6th floor of a local hospital at lunch time, I left the hospital in half hour: waited for the doctor to come back from lunch, got seen and checked, diagnosed, then went down to the ground floor, the staff already had my medication in the basket. I wanted to share my experience with the healthcare system in China, particularly regarding my treatment for gastro issues. For context, I had been waiting for 18 months for a microscopy appointment through the UK NHS. Frustrated with the long wait, I considered going private. However, I was quoted a total of £1,020 before even starting treatment-£160 for a consultation and £860 for the microscopy. In search of alternatives, I decided to visit one of the best gastro hospitals in Shenzhen, China. As a foreigner, I was able to book an appointment online and was seen within a week. The efficiency of the system was remarkable: I had my microscopy and blood tests done on the same day. A week later, I underwent minor stomach surgery. The entire process, including surgery, medicine, and all other associated costs, amounted to just under £100 as a UK citizen. I believe locals pay even less due to their health insurance coverage. The hospital itself was incredibly modern, clean, and efficient, providing an experience that far exceeded my expectations.

China understands that it has to have a strong social foundation for its people to achieve high levels of development. In US, healthcare or medical services is treated as a favor for those who can afford it like owning a car. Even people with medical insurance are discouraged from using medical services for preventive care which is critical to achieve better healthcare outcomes, So health insurance is mostly used to treat diseases rather than preventing or identifying conditions before they gets worse. It not uncommon to see people using Urgent care as a form of primary care so that they don't have wait for a long time to see a Doc..

In Shanghai, I was able to book a same day appointment and it costed a grand total of $6. There I also did an teech X-Ray for free - that would be hundreds of $$$ in the US as well - they found a few holes in my teech. I did two fillings for $40 each. Last year my GF was with me in China, she got a cold and we decided to try out Chinese medicine. So we went to a traditional Chinese herbal medicine pharmacy. There was a doctor there seeing patients. We didn't have to wait, we saw him right away. After looking at my GF's tongue, and feeling her pulses, he prescribed some herbs that costed about $20. (He probably have over-prescribed since we are from Germany and can afford more.) After drinking nasty herbal soup for a day, my GF got well.

Medical in the USA has "gone digital" but its still in a learning curve phase, and there are multiple systems used by different medical groups and doctors. My GP belongs to a large group that does referrals and comingles medical records so any doctor in the group can access your medical history. The digital system is also used to send medication prescriptions to pharmacies so no paper system. Yeah, if you don't have medical insurance the costs can be outrageous, and medical insurance is best purchased through a group like your employment; buying an individual policy is crazy expensive, but still cheaper than going without insurance. The whole insurance system and medical costs in general are very 'murky', very 'gray', so its hard to figure out what actual costs of services are. Dental insurance is a separate service and only covers the most basic of services, but these days dentists are starting to turn into salesmen selling added services like teeth whitening, crowns, veeners, braces, tooth replacements, etc. for more income.

The provocative word "rationing" is often brought up in the US media whenever healthcare reform is on the agenda. There is nothing wrong with rationing any scarce resources in high demand. Nevertheless it is a trigger word in public healthcare debates because of ethical issues. Should senior citizens be denied treatment? Rich people getting preferential services? Three years of the pandemic have burnt out many doctors and nurses everywhere. Many just quit their profession. In the US and Canada many people could not find a family doctor. The concept of one's personal physician does not seem to exist in China. All doctors are pooled into hospitals. Is that true?

Some people believe that if a patient dies in the hospital, it is the hospital's fault. They demand compensation from the hospital, but if the hospital refuses, they will hit the doctor. Nowadays, this situation is much less common. Of course, there are also cases where a patient's death was caused by a doctor's mistake, but it is rare and doctors can be sued

1. I doubt the average salary in Shanghai is 13K, I don't know where you get it, my understanding it is somewhere 8-10k maybe. 2. In general the health care is extremely affordable in China compared to the US and Europe. 3. Even though I hate going to hospitals, I had a few experiences from small to big issues and overall the doctors have a lot of experience due to the sheer amount of people they have to take care of.

Last Thursday I had high fever, called gp and the receptionist simply told me there’s no appointment, call us tmr at 8. It was 39.5 degree fever and I almost blacked out for a moment. I went to hospital at 8:00pm, because that’s the only place you could be seen by a doctor after 6pm. It was until 3am I was seen by a doctor and then I was sent home at 5am. I had to wait in super uncomfortable chair for almost 5 hours during which I had fever again and experience a lot of pain. I was lucky that day there were not too many patients so I was given a bed at almost 2am. I am really happy I will be back to China soon and don’t ever need to go through this.

I live in Shanghai, and 2% of my salary is automatically deducted for government medical insurance. In 2022, when I worked at a consulting firm, my salary exceeded the upper limit for the medical insurance payment base (35,000 RMB), so I paid 683 RMB each month. In 2023, I worked at a law firm where my salary was below the lower limit of the base (6,800 RMB), so I paid 142 RMB each month. Despite this, I can still use the balance in my medical account accumulated from previous years. I rarely visit the hospital. Recently, I bought a gel for treating acne that cost 28 RMB, which was fully covered by my medical account. The registration fee for a top public hospital is 25 RMB, with 19 RMB paid by the account and 6 RMB paid in cash. I'm particularly satisfied with the MRI price: 400 RMB for one part (ankle, knee, etc.), with 360 RMB covered by the account and 40 RMB paid in cash. I will get most of my body scanned before I go abroad next year; it will surely save me a huge amount of money. In fact I think the low price we paid for medical care is based on the exploitation of docters and nurses in public hospitals. They are so diligent with so small salary. To be honest I cannot fully understanded why don't they emmigrant to other countries or work for private/international hospitals.

I’m sorry to say that your generalities as to the wealth of Chinese citizens is totally misguided! Millions of Chinese are almost unable to feed themselves properly yet alone pay to see a doctor or for medication! And salaries in a big city are huge compared to other towns. And that’s BEFORE the latest tragedies taking place today all over the country. I personally witnessed an elderly lady whose up front payment for treatment of a broken hip ran out and her pain medication was withdrawn until family arrived to pay a few hours later. My wife at the time was in the adjacent bed btw. Such care and compassion eh??

Pay & get an appointment, pay, get treated, of course. ¥25, yes, not much to see a doctor, but how much after? From my experience I cut my leg, needed stitches, every time I returned, before treatment, pay first(¥100+ each time), this is not affordable to many & was a pretty simple procedure. It's also worth mentioning, hospitals in Shanghai/Beijing)1st Tier cities differ from inland. It's hard to compare to the NHS, which definitely has it's troubles, but it's free to the point of service & not whether you can afford to pay.

Here in the U.S. cut your thumb on chop saw, go to urgent care for 5 stitches and you get a bill for $5k and of course you need to go to PC for stitch removal and paid for your own medication. The outcomes of the Chinese healthcare system is also clear. For example, according to UN sources, during COVID 2019 to 2021, life expectancy was still going up in China and reached 78.12 in 2021. By contrast, in the US it was dropping in those same years and reached 76.38 in 2021. So it’s better to be in China than in the US during a healthcare crisis thus showing the superiority of the Chinese healthcare system to that in the US.
