I Didn't Expect This Quality! - BMW R60/5 Rocker Arm Parts

Жыл бұрын

The ordered motorcycle parts arrived with significant flaws, which caused a setback for the engine rebuild. There were multiple issues across a variety of parts for the top end of the BMW engine, causing concern about the overall quality of the manufacturer. The flaws include incorrect sizing and poor surface finishes.
Despite being super frustrated with the situation, I have high hopes that a solution can be found. There are a few options for a resolution including returning the parts for replacement parts or seeking a refund from the supplier. Even if I receive a refund, I wouldn't want to order the same parts from a different source, just to be surprised with the same "quality".
This issue may also entail waiting for a new batch of parts to be manufactured and shipped. In the meantime, the engine rebuild project remains on hold until a suitable solution is found.
Updates will follow in the KZbin community tab.

haha, you are right. I am am performing quality control for the supplier and for BMW. Maybe they will hire me sometime soon! It's very unfortunate that these parts were delivered, but I believe this will help other BMW owner out there as well. It's always good practice to measure parts before assembling them. One tiny flaw can lead to catastrophic failures down the road. Hopefully new "quality-parts" will be sent out to me soon. Thanks for your comment, Matthew. Regards Andreas

Munich here. I am shocked by these parts! They look much worse than many old parts you can still pick up at vintage vehicle markets in Germany. I do order from 3rd party suppliers quite often and the quality is mixed. However, luckily in Germany you can still buy used engine parts in good condition without much of a problem. Hope you can get things sorted out! Cheers!

Hi there, from Munich! I agree with you on that, there are probably used parts in better condition than the one I received here. Even the used ones I removed were somewhat acceptable compared to these! The supplier is well-known and they deal with BMW bikes all the way back to the models from the 1930's...I just hope their stock isn't as bad as the parts I received, or else they will have a big problem with other customers too. At this current moment the parts are on the way back to Germany for a quality check by the supplier and I've been in touch with BMW Group Germany and they are also looking into this topic. I'm glad I was able to share this with you and all other viewers, just so you are aware of the parts that are out there. You never know what will arrive when you order something nowadays! Thank you for your positive words. Regards Andreas

I'm pretty sure you are supposed to press the bushings into the rocker arms, then ream them to the spec size.
@WorkshopRebuild
@WorkshopRebuild Жыл бұрын
Hello Steve, it would make sense that the bushing pressed into the rocker arm, but this is not how BMW designed this assembly. The rocker arm bushing floats between the rocker arm shaft and the rocker arm. These parts have clearances to each other and this can be found in the service manual. The inside diameter of the bushing is already oversized, which wouldn’t work to ream them out. BMW chose tight tolerances and for some reason none of the parts in front of me are according to the service manual sizes. I‘ll see what the supplier has to say and I‘ll keep you updated. Thanks for your comment! Regards Andreas

I suspect that the rocker arm with the markings on it (the good one) is an old stock part from the original supplier or factory, and the unmarked ones are recent reproduction items, albeit authorised by BMW and sold as 'genuine'. It shows how quality control standards have fallen since the heydays of the 1970s when German engineering quality was simply the finest.
@WorkshopRebuild
@WorkshopRebuild 11 ай бұрын
I agree with you on this! It looks like a different batch of rocker arm parts and for some reason 3 of them were from a bad pile (unfortunately). The quality has drastically dropped over the years and I can only hope quality parts can be found in the future. Until then I will strive to point out errors like this in future videos, because it's just not right especially if you spend a premium on so-called "quality parts". In the worst case scenario, I will setup a CNC machine lathe and start spitting parts out like this myself. Show the process from start to finish and offer these parts for sale. On the other side, I have high hopes that this supplier will get to the bottom of this issue...to help myself but other customers too! Thanks for sharing this comment, it's much appreciated! Regards Andreas

Those rocker arms definitely look odd. Almost like you got one genuine one and three that someone had made in their shed after looking at a scan of a grainy photograph of the original part. I also noticed that the three bad rocker arms don't seem to have any markings on them whereas the good one does. That also seems to be a bit odd. Good luck resolving this, hope you get a satisfactory resolution.

Thanks for tuning in and leaving a comment! I totally agree with you. The "good" rocker arm, seemed to be manufactured to different standards and the surfaces were much better. The casting looked better and like you mentioned, the casting marks were not the same. It's very possible that these were produced in different batches, but they should still hold similar quality at the end of the day. I am in touch with the supplier and I will try to resolve this issue as soon as possible. I will keep you updated! Regards Andreas

No bike issues, but that's only because I ended up rebuilding my old Land Rover 2.25L engine 3x because of two batches of bad cam followers. Turns out Tata had moved production to a new supplier, so "OEM" were being produced in India, rather than the old supplier in England, and the Indian production units were not properly heat treated. I reached out to an engine builder in England that produces warranties crate engines, and they advised that the original supplier is still producing them in England - so having learned that lesson, I ended up intentionally bumping into Tim Stafford down at Quail; he was super helpful with some tips for my R60 and R76 restorations (even down to questions about those stupid factory VIN tag rivets). Maybe try reaching out to him or Air Support to see where they source rockers from (and then update us all cuz I need a set too!).
@WorkshopRebuild
@WorkshopRebuild 11 ай бұрын
Oh man it's unfortunate that you had to tear your Land Rover engine apart just because of the cam followers. Made in England, US, Canada, Germany doesn't really exist anymore and it's a sad thing really. You're pretty lucky to find a supplier for warranty crate engines in England! I have heard great things about Tim, but I have never reached out to him yet. He must receive hundreds of messages and emails on a daily basis, regarding BMW bikes and parts and that's another reason why I wouldn't want to bother him with the issue I'm having with my supplier. If I don't find a solution anytime soon, I will definitely inquire where quality parts can be sourced. I will keep you updated on this topic and if I hear any good news, I'll let you know. Thank you for your insightful comment. Regards Andreas

You would think that‘s what the engineers put on paper, but it‘s not in this case. The rocker arm bushings have clearance between the rocker arm and between the rocker arm shaft! This is the factory spec and this clearance can be read within the service manual. I have a solution to this and I‘ll share more information in an upcoming video. Thanks for your comment👍🏽👍🏽

This should give them enough feedback to recall the whole batch of parts they have, to ensure they don't send more parts out to other clients with serious flaws. I fully understand what you mean and your statement is spot on! Quality can be produced right at the machine and it wouldn't have to passed through QC. Most modern manufacturing setups have cameras built right into machines that control the quality as the parts are spit out. Not only does this give you live feedback on your quality, but it ensures your series or mass production run is all within spec. It's hard to say, what process was used to machine these parts and how they were checked...but they are definitely not good! We'll see what the supplier has to say about my follow-up email. Well it is a shame with your new parts. I am riding a bmw gs and when I had to change clutch parts, I went to my certified bmw motorcycle dealer and ordered original bmw spare parts. Yes they cost more then oem like parts from other dealers, but they fit without a doubt. There are differences between those two ways of getting the parts needed for repair. But everyone can do like he wants to do. Friends have Harley’s and it is the same problem when you don’t live in the country of the manufacturer. As European don’t buy stuff from overseas and as an American you need premium trusted people in Germany to ride and service a bmw. Amen

Hi all, problem is the supplier, which changed and continued production after BMW stopped production of the genuine parts. As far as I know, the manufacturing of parts have been sold to different suppliers… I am not in details but it’s the same as for i.e. Vespa. Old bikes and scooters always needs spare parts and all aftermarket parts are not so good in quality because the amount of needed spare parts decreases with the age of the regarding vehicles. Even the know-how of the following suppliers often is technical not as high now as the quality while manufacturing by the original manufacturer back then. So the problem ist not a BMW-problem only, it is a problem over all manufacturers, which vehicles are still on the road.
@WorkshopRebuild
@WorkshopRebuild 11 ай бұрын
Yes, this is most likely what they have done in this case, but unfortunately this manufacturer (whoever it is) is not supplying quality parts and that is running through BMW's name! Not only is this a bad image, but it must be a breach of contract as well. Something I do not want to be part and that's why I will keep names out of this video. Despite the lack of know-how, in manufacturing you must be able to read and comprehend technical drawings. This is the first step to manufacturing any parts! If this cannot be done, they should close their business right away. I'm glad I can shed light on this topic and share it with you and many other viewers. Not only will this help you but everyone looking for parts to keep their classic bikes and cars running. I hope this issue will be resolved and I can share positive news with you in the end. Hi Xavier, I didn‘t mention the name of the supplier as I don‘t want to get into any legal trouble. The supplier offers over 14‘000 BMW motorcycle parts and has been in business for over 40 years. I‘m not saying it‘s their fault, nor BMW‘s fault, but it is very fishy. What I am showcasing in this video is a batch of parts that I received from Germany that is supposed to be OEM. After many emails and weeks of waiting, I received a full refund for the rocker arm parts, but probably only because of this video I published. It might have changed the owners mind in giving me a refund😅 Since this video I have released an update on this topic for you to see here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppayd3l5r92abck I‘m very sorry to hear that you have had issues with your R100/7 id badge🥲 It‘s hard to believe that you didn‘t have any warranty on this item. It‘s not like you altered it or damaged it on purpose! I do not tolerate this type of quality, either from a major corporation or a parts supplier. It‘s fully understandable that things can go wrong, but not to the extent where parts carry flaws prior to the installation. Hopefully the supply chain will get better…but if that doesn‘t happen, we might have to produce out own quality parts😉👍🏽 Thanks for sharing your experience! Regards Andreas

It is part of the deal when you work on old cars or motorcycles. You will get into such issues, should take that into account in the budget. It is very difficult to check all parts coming in for big distributors, they only can rely on the manufacturer. Some manufacturers source their parts from different suppliers, depending where it is available or cheaper. Also difficult in some cases to make the difference between dead on arrival and killed by the user on arrival. In the case of the rocker it was obvious I guess. But some will say the parts are just ok ... I know, I hate wehn they say that. ;-)

Hi You are right, the 4 shafts are out of tollerance in the side but ok in the middle because the 2 big hole deform the shaft itself. No good. The bushing inside surface it's bad, and if you press in to the roker arm will be more tight, so, impossible to work on the shaft. In the same time a small pression to insert need, to avoid that the busting runs in the roker arm.I believe the parts are made not in Germany but by some suppliers may be in india or china, less cost for old bike not in production, BMW save a lot of money. I don't consider that professional, and less professional it' s the answer received from BMW...I can check all the parts??? You pay a lot for this parts, bmw must to check. No good for my opinion. Regards and sorry for my English, I am Italian😊
@WorkshopRebuild
@WorkshopRebuild 11 ай бұрын
Hi Piero, you are completely correct. This rocker arm shaft was probably ground before the 2big bores were drilled. This caused the material to swell on the ends! The bushings have no chance of being put onto the rocker arm shafts, due to this defect. According to the factory sizes, the bushing inside diameter would still be too large for the rocker arm shaft even if they would be straight. The bushing surface is horrible and it's not a good fit for a bushing. I agree, these parts must have been produced by the lowest bidder for this job. I'm not sure where they were produced, because there were a couple stickers on each bag (Germany, Sweden...) who know where they actually came from! Since this video was uploaded I discussed this topic with the supplier and the parts have been returned for a quality check. I paid this price to receive quality parts that can be installed without any modifications...but that is not what I received. It's important to me that quality is delivered, regardless of the price point. If this company cannot make quality bushings, how can they make bolts, nuts or even gaskets? We have to be more careful in the future where we purchase parts and I hope to find a solution about this topic soon. Thank you for your in-depth comment about this topic and thank you for your support from Italy! Regards Andreas

You mention that you bought these from a supplier - does this mean you didn't buy directly from BMW? There are a lot of counterfeit parts out there and even if the packages look like genuine BMW, they aren't necessarily real unless they came from BMW or a supplier that deals only directly with BMW and has an unimpeachable reputation, Those look like counterfeit parts. Last year I bought a BMW part through a supplier in Cyprus who had a good reputation but only a couple years in business. No days I don't even touch or buy German cars even if they are dirt cheap

You might not want to buy any dirt-cheap car! Many cars from the 70's and 80's can be found rotting away in backyard and you'll see these go up for sale on the internet (running when parked haha). Thanks for leaving two comments, Robert. Regards Andreas

In China you can produce quality parts, but you have to pay for it, just like in any other country. It looks like these parts were manufactured by the lowest bidder and shipped to the supplier without measuring them😅 Hopefully I final a solution with the supplier😬

Yes, it's mainly due to the volume that can be supplied, but it's unfortunate for the brand...

Looks like you got cheap Asian knockoffs. The crime is that you were charged genuine BMW prices! Asian budget quality is a common problem I have run into with several makes: Fiat, Jaguar, VW, etc. Chinese companies copy the original parts selling them at a fraction of the originals. Often, they are the only parts available and must be reworked to get them closer to spec. I would send those parts back for a complete refund and never use that source again. He tried to pass those off as BMW.

Even if these parts were produced elsewhere, I wouldn't be mad. It's unfortunate these parts didn't fit in each other and that's the reason why I went on to measure them... The sizes were all over the place and the surface were very poor. Now I can only hope for better quality parts in the future. Regards Andreas
