I've had the small trangia mess tin for at least 25 years. In the last year or so I became aware of some of the accessories, not only the pouch as shown in the video, but also a useful insert that sits inside the mess tin, meaning that items can go in it, without there being any annoying/non tactical rattling as you move down the trail. Inexpensive, durable, lightweight, and conducts heat very well.

Campingmoon makes a version of both in a heavier gauge aluminum. They have a few more features for about the same cost and they fit, snugly, in the trangia bags.

I've modified my small trangia mess tin, the handle locks and there's now a pouring spout on one corner. I removed the handle and dremmelled a groove either end of the hinge on the bottom so you can press the handle into the notches so the tin doesn't flip when you pour hot water out the spout which is a hole in the corner of the lid/tin. I also drilled a tiny hole in the lid to prevent an air lock when pouring water with the lid on. Works a treat. I used it with a rectangular spirit burner and home made wind shield/pot stand made of flat titanium sheets that slot together to make a rectangular stand.

Like you, I've used a White Box stove with mine for years. I added a heavy cloth tape grab handle to the lid to make it easier to remove and replace it when it's hot from cooking. Works like a charm. I also picked up a wool handle cover from the website to reduce the chance of finger burners. Great for one or two, maybe more, days out with freeze dried meals or good menu planning.

one reason the handle on mess tins is nice (and long with heat protection) is that if you are on uneven ground or over a fire you can hold the tin over the heat source, rather than relying on setting it on something - making it versitile for cooking in lots of conditions. like holding a pan over a heat source, really, whilst having the benefits of a pot/cup.

The 800ml small works well with an Esbit medium or pocket stove. Daiso makes a 500ml tin that nests perfectly inside the "small" tin and has a plethora of accessories for it including a small kettle. I've since many years several of the small tins and use them as containers for various kits. You can easily waterproof them by using an electrical tape, they are sturdy and light weight, yet they can catch bends and scratches quite easily depending on how rough you store, transport or use them. Would be nice to get them in titanium which is much more sturdy but I guess Trangia isn't really into it. Maybe somebody else will jump in and grab their customers, e.g. iBasingo offers already something looking very similar to the large size Trangia tin in titanium yet offering only 1 liter volume. Boiling water is no issue with these tins yet for real cooking purposes I prefer round or oval shaped containers as they are usually much easier to clean than rectangular ones where you have always challenges to get the dirt out of the corners. As most fires and stoves are producing either round or square shaped flame and heat patterns, rectangular shape isn't also the best solution for cooking even though aluminium is highly heat conductive. So yes I totally love these tins but consider and adjust how to use them best according to their pros and cons ... 😁

The small one you can also buy a belt pouch for to fit on your belt and keep with you in the bush. Basically the same size and dementions as the SAS escape and evasion kit. With the pouch and a little skill and researching can provide all the necessary things for an uncomfortable few nights in the bush. And in my day we did not carry them in our chest rig…not invented then. We wore them on a belt/webbing or in the back pocket/pouch thingy we had in our smocks. Remember we thought different then. We literally could live and hold all we needed in our smock. Or jacket for everyone else

I have an Afranti tin (also aluminum) the size of the smaller Trangia and identical in most respects. A downside of the lid is that you can't cover the tin with it while cooking because you'll burn your hand taking it off. I've tried it with a glove, and the lid is still too hot to remove easily just off the flame. A handle on the lid would be nice. The Afranti includes a mesh carry bag with a draw string. The bag has plenty of room for a pot and utensils in addition to the tin. I carry two pots in it, one inside of the other, and the tin has room for my alcohol burner and triangle stove. The Afranti also includes a steaming rack though I've never used it, and I'm not sure what to do with it. The Afranti costs a bit more than the Trangia on Amazon, but the price includes the mesh bag. Since the Trangia's price doesn't include a case, and I prefer the mesh bag anyway, the Afranti is a better value for my money. A case that only covers the tin seems pointless anyway. The outside of a tin doesn't need protection.
