Loved the review…glad I have now found my tribe with the mini 😂 as I usually get a few laughs when I pull this out instead of the latest water boiler in one minute stove. I have done a few mods for personal preference as this set up is a truly set up and mod individually which is a great feature in itself. Have the cutting board without holes have to try one like yours, bought extra handle and on both use a bit of bike tube ranger band wrapped around a few times and leave on canslide up and down and leave handles on while cooking. Areal game changer was buying snowpeak titanium bowl fits exactly into Kit still closes up mostly use it to double up bowls then I can hold without burning hand. Worth the extra ounce I think and of course throw in a extra folding spork you can have company also. I love my stove so much I use it at home everyday instead of my kitchen stove. I have only had to replace a frying pan twice but that’s solid usage for 8 years thx again for the review

For a windshield, I use one I cut out of one of those disposable aluminum roasting pans. You can make several out of one and when one wears out you have more to replace it with.

For a windshield, i cut tall beer cans into 2 sheets which interlock, and bend around the burner, with breath holes. Use very thin, cheap tent pegs to hold in position or some heavy stones

I used a disposable oven tray and cut out the flat bottom part to get a slightly less flimsy aluminium windshield, compared to regular aluminium foil.

It was fun listening to someone that enjoys the outdoors and isn't so much of an ultralight gear head. I just ordered the stove and holder because my pot and frypan are fine. This is a big step because I've been a pop can stove user. I'm going to try the mod that some are doing using rolled up carbon felt in the center with steel wool underneath. Burns longer and with a blue flame.

Great review. You definitely made it honest and correct. It is what it is and in certain situations it definitely shines. Can certainly feed one well. I always go it alone and just recently upgraded to the 27 which is fantastic also like the 25. I just chose the 27 though because space is always at a premium when I'm cycle touring. But the mini still makes an appearance on shorter trips. Thank you again 😊

Thanks Robert! I've been humming and hawing about getting the T27 and still cant make my mind up. Even though the T25 is overkill when going solo I'm so comfortable with it. The Mini fills a gap when I don't need all the things from a large Trangia but every now and again I would really like something in between. Cheers!

Great review as always. Had my Mini for about 9 months now and absolutely love it. Just the right size for solo outings yet big enough to cook up something more substantial than rehydrated noodles or pasta if required. A windshield is definitely a must take item to get the most out of the stove as it's very susceptible to the slightest breeze. Enjoying your videos and loved the locations you use. A great review of this stove kit. I’ve had my T-28 for +15 years. It’s still my most used stove, and the one excess weight I’m happy to carry on lightweight overnight hikes due to its reliability and capability.

Great review, I’ve had my T28 20 years, was my first Trangia before my 27. I made a windshield from an old aluminium pot, same size as cooking pot, cut bottom out and drilled ventilation holes :)

I have been considering the mini but I think I might have regrets shortly after the purchase. If I were to purchase the mini, I would make a modification to the pot stand by making one of the recesses wider to allow for better use of the simmer ring. The modification would essentially widen the recessed area to allow for ease of adjustment of the simmering ring. I don't feel that the mod would effect the pot stand in an adverse way. I think it's possible to make for a wider range with a hacksaw and the only thing that will be impeded is the ability for shielding against the wind, and it's highly debatable if it can get much worse. I haven't tried it myself, I think I have the range that's necessary even if some more would be convenient. Cheers!

Agreed, windshield essential. The Bushline Designs Titanium Windshield was the one which was the best option in conjunction with a paper clip imo. 10% dilution of water in the meths reduces the sooting too.

I agree completely. Haven't checked out any titanium wind shields yet but I think that theese circular ones would be a good match for my triangle and gas burner, fitting great in the billy pot. Cheers!

Thanks for the review Redswede. I just recently ordered the T28, after making use of the 27 for some years. I'm going to have a play and see what I can do with it... but I have to be honest the 27 offers quite alot more function in my opinion. Often my application is not so much longer hiking, but motorcycle trips so the extra weight if not such a problem for me. Great tip about getting a smaller size bag for the T28 though. As always thanks for making these videos... I find them helpful and they certainly have encouraged me to pick up more Trangia equipment than my partner knows about!

Thanks very much for the review, it was very informative. I did just use a bit of electrical tape wrapped around the handle (messy) but your method of using a zip tie has already been done, thanks. I use a different method for a wind shield. I bought a disposable aluminium roasting tray from the supermarket. I then cut a side off, straightened up the folded edge, lightly rolled it and cut it to shape. The size covered 3 of the 4 air holes. I then trimmed to a height of a few millimetres below the top so the pot would still be stable. Finally, marked up the 3 air holes and cut them out. This sheild sits inside the stand, so it can't blow over and is stored between the pot and stand. All the best

Excellent review. I use a Vargo miniature folding windscreen: 5 aluminium panels, each 80mm square, weighing about 35g. For a pot gripper I have cut-down a standard Trangia grip so that the top plate is just 60mm long, with only two holes remaining. This fits well inside the T28 kit and provides a very secure grip. Your zip-tie idea for the supplied grip is very neat though, so I've done that as well.

Cool review! The Mini is definitely my to go stove for solo adventures. Not as storm proof as the 27/25 but does the trick with a windshield. Made mine out of thicker aluminium folie, the on tiu typically find in one time use serving plates etc. Fits inside the stove as well. I also have room for a foldacup, lighter, a cut down dish wash sponge and a foldable spork. A complete kit except from fuel. Just love it. Keep upbthe nice Trangia videos. I bought a 28 for my wife but I seem to use it more. I have the micro, mini, triangle, mess tins and the 27. I like Trangia😂. We put a regular pot holder instead of the lightweight one. I got out our 28 recently and couldnt get the frypan off. After the accident my hands arent that strong. Had to prise it off with my swiss army... Agree a oit the windshield for the moni and micro. The titanium foil windshields fit but, ironically, wind can defeat them. I have an edelrid wondshield of one sheet of soft metal, like the flashing you get on roofs. You can bend it however you want. I also use those plate ones bit remove most of the plates so it just goes round. I dont really cook on the mini and micro, just boil water, mainly because of the simmer ring issue. Cooking is best on the 27. Totally agree on silent packs as well and will maybe try to make a cutting board. I Like that idea, thanks.

I agree that cooking is best in the larger Trangias, but sometimes I'm happy to not have the bulk if I want something easy for just me. The simmer ring kinda works even if it can be more than just a little fiddly. I hope you'll get a speedy recovery from your accident, nasty business that one. Cheers Ewen!

Yes, it's bulky and heavy, but I just love what one can do with it, and if I expect "shitty" weather conditions I wouldn't rely on anything else. But if weight and space is a major concern the Mini does come in handy. Cheers!

I bought one recently and I love it…even used it yesterday at work to make Polish bacon sandwiches for me and the apprentice. for a windshield, maybe use the thicker throwaway baking trays the tin foil ones. Rigid and still as foldable.

When it isn't full and rattles around, I have found that it wears on the inside of the pan as well. That's a good solution you have. It is perfect for one person but two is a stretch. But when I'm just going for a day hike it is good and light and small. Also I find it fun to work withing limitations.

great video, I love trangia cooksets the 27 was the first cookset for camping I ever bought 16 years ago and its the only one I use for month long trips, this year I got the mini which will be perfect for bikepacking short trips not had chance to use it yet so this video was useful. I try not to use meths because I dont like the smell when burning I find it extremely nauseating and then theirs the black soot all over pots/pans, instead (and when I can get hold of it) I use bio-ethinol it burns very clean with no smell.

If I were to review my Mini and if I were as articulate as you, this is exactly the review I’d put out! The “windscreen” is indeed awful, all else is typical Trangia thought-through and practical. One additional comment: the storage bag can also hold a spork, small oil bottle, etc.

A great review about my all time favourite. What you missed though is that it's not compatible with the gas burner, or maybe I did not hear. Yes, the distance between the burner and the bottom of the pan/pot is rather short and if you don't wait for the burner to bloom an you place the pot onto the `windshield` right after the fire is lit, it will take much more time for the burner to bloom. At least that's what I've noticed so far.

You're right there. It's kind of a drawback that you cant use gas, only the mini and the micro kits are unable to do that in Trangias assortment as far as I know. On the other hand they don't pretend that it is. I didn't cover that in the review, you're absolutely right. About the blooming there's two ways to approach it, and neither is wrong in my opinion. You wait for the bloom and get a better efficiency from the burner faster or you put the pot on right away and use every bit of heat the burner can provide even if the blooming takes longer to appear. I guess there's an exact science to it but in the end I think it's a matter of taste so to speak. Cheers!

And if you want to use it with gas you can fill the T28 with the gas adapter and just bring the Triangle with you (doesn’t fit inside, but is of course slim). But then, on the other hand, you could also use the pot and pan on a normal small gas stove, like a PocketRocket etc.

I've yet to use an alcohol stove. Just finding out about it. I'm usually a camp fire guy or in a situation, a propane stove. But the alcohol seems lighter. I appreciate your video.

If you leave the handle open and on top, it springs upwards and stops any rattling (not on it's side). I presumed that was part of the design and not an accident!? I use the zip tie to fix the handle closed on the pan in use, great tip.

There is the risk that the zip tie will melt from the flames and the handle snaps open if you hang it on the pot or pan, it happened to me recently, so even if it's tempting to have it sit there during cooking I stopped doing that now. Cheers!

I wonder if the metals will eventually split from each other because of their heating properties being so different. Kind of like the copper clad aluminum wiring in house decades ago that caused fires because the copper and aluminum expanded at different rates, causing gaps, which caused arcing, which caused fires. Do you like your NS?

The new NS is better than the one I have in my old pan. DS is new to me but I think I would choose a mix of HA pots and DS pan and take my chances that it lives up to Trangias usual quality. In the end I think they are all good in their own way and it comes down to how much one is willing to pay and then carry in ones pack. Cheers!

I use mine with a Trangia Triangle it's much better, I love my T28 it's a brilliant bit of kit. I have used mine with meths but also bio-ethanol gel which works really well.

Haven't really tried meths or gel. They aren't that common in Sweden and is harder to come by, while the spirit can be bought in any petrol station. Cheers!

@@RedswedeOutdoors the gel is basically hand sanitizer, it burns quite quickly and it's best to use Trangia's own dish to hold the heat in place. The down side is it does burn quickly but this is ok for things that are more liquid based or thin rounds of bacon or an egg. The good points are the fact you can buy the blocks in a small sachet a bit like a sauce from a fast food chain. This means you don't need a bottle and you can stuff these sachets in any spare spaces in your kit. Sorry when I said meths I was shortening the word methylated spirit. Still my preferred method when hiking but when I use my bike the gel blocks free up a bit of space. I reckon in good weather I can get about 5 minutes longer with spirit burner plus with the simmer ring more control. But if I am making a cup of tea or a boil in the bag MRE then gel works well. Great video by the way, I've just found you so I will have a look at your other videos later.

I promised my self, to learn how to use my T28 better this winter. As I have mentioned before I almost starts a fire every time I use my T28. So for me it’s a winter stove. Last winter I used it when most of the ground was covered in snow to make it safer. But the heat from the burner melted the snow under the stove so it started to move around, the ground was leaning. And I was able to start a small fire in dry blueberry plant that wasn’t covered with snow 😂

Thankfully I haven't started any wildfires yet, and hopefully I never will. Haven't tried it in snow yet but I can imagine that the potstand will get a bit warmer than the windshield of a full sized Trangia, that won't get hot at all. Maybe a small coaster in cork can solve the problem since it has excellent heat insulation and weighs next to nothing..? Cheers Joones!

@@RedswedeOutdoors I have to do some experimenting. That’s potstand is probably the weakest point and the burner has maybe to high effect for the construction. When you put water in the fuel you lowering the effect. It would have been interesting to test it with the military Svea burner it has about 70% of the trangia burner. But that burner is larger so it will probably not fit in the potstand. 🤔

Is the trangia burner just one size? The burner doesn’t come in different sizes, does it?

To the best of my knowledge there is only one size, and it's been the same for at least 50 years. So no matter what model you have, T25, T27, T28 or the triangle, the spirit burner fits them all. Cheers!

Great video and awesome information! You mentioned the 25 as your other Trangia. Have you tried the 27 and, if so, how did you like the size difference? Also, with a variety of different materials/coatings, do you have a preferred Trangia material you like to use?

Thank you! I haven't tried the T 27 yet and my T 25 is so old that aluminum was the only option for the pots. The non-stick pan was probably the first generation and the new ones are better. I have been looking at the T27 as a smaller option for myself and will probably end up with a mix of materials, even though I'm not unhappy with the aluminum I have. The pots in Hardanodized aluminum and Duossal for the frypan. Thoose choices are in the both heavy and pricey end but gives me a kit that has all options and can take a beating. I might change my mind several times though... Cheers!

👍👍👍 A good review that will give those considering buying one, something to mull over. I need no convincing as I already have one and just love it! Agreed, that is definitely not a windscreen .. just a pot stand .. and which does the job. A Tip .. (from someone who lives in Trangia Land). Store always, the Burner in the Plastic Bag provided (or an equivalent)! Apparently, in the presence of moisture, however minimal, 'galvanic corrosion' (?) can occur between the Brass Burner and the Aluminium Pot Stand (worse if the Burner is stored sans Plastic Bag in a thin-walled Aluminium Pot). Not healthy for either item and the Aluminium can with time, perforate. A Mod that I have applied to my Trangia Burner (and before I am drowned out by howls of horror and/or derision 😳 .. 😏). I have filled my Burner with non-flammable heat-resistant Ceramic Wool .. relatively loosely packed and then topped with a tight roll of Carbon Felt to keep everything in place. Why? To reduce (greatly .. even completely .. and it does 👍) the risk of burning fuel spillage in the event of an inadvertent knock over. The Swiss Authorities have absolutely no sense of humour with those who set their forests alight .. eye-watering fines being the order of the day. Pros and Cons? Pros: 1. Reduced Spillage Risk. 2. Less chance of fuel leakage 'if' (I don't) stored with fuel in the burner. 3. Easier to light and use in sub-zero temps. The pot can be placed almost immediately onto the pot stand without waiting for the 'bloom' and without the flame being snuffed. 4. For me, it burns with what 'appears' to be a 'gentler' flame and which suits my style of cooking. Although .. using a tightly-enclosing wind shield, it goes into 'after burner mode' without much ado. Cons: Really, I don't know as I have not made a formal comparison .. relying just on 'gut feel' and observation .. aka 'thumb suck' 😏. 1. Burner efficiency to me, does not appear to be overly compromised. The 'bloom' 'may' perhaps take a wee bit longer .. but then, one is making use of the heat output directly after putting match to burner. 2. Gauging visually, fuel level. I do that beforehand .. having learned how many 'squeezes / glugs' from the respective fuel bottles are required for a specific task. Also, the length of time it takes for the fuel to 'soak in' gives me an indication as to how full the container is. There .. my mod. Perhaps worth a try as the undoing thereof is easy peas with no negative aftermath. That Zip Tie on the Pot Grip works great! 😊. After sizing, trimming the tip and then turning the zip tie inside out makes for a neater end product. Oh yes, also .. I have upgraded my T28 by putting it into a Decathlon Quechua MH 100 1.1 litre Stainless Steel Pot. It fits just right, with room for a flexible circular aluminium wind screen. I think the corrosion is more of a problem with the full sized Trangias since the burner is kept in contact with a pot or a kettle, but I guess it's better to be safe than sorry. The spill protection is sound advice with or without hefty fines. So far I haven't knocked my burner over but it could happen anytime. (I have however contaminated my food with the spirit effectively making it ineadible, it tastes horrible since it, at least in Sweden, contains Bitrex ) Thanks for sharing Thomas, Cheers!

I second using the yellow bag when storing the burner inside kit for any longer time. When I moved north and unpacked my kit after a year or two (only had the favorite 25 at the time), it had somehow corroded a hole in my essential-for-life coffee pot! Disaster!

You can use most trangia pots and pans on the Mini potstand for cooking but to my knowledge it doesn't pack away particulary well with any other set. Cheers!

Is the flange on the bottom of the pot the same size as the flange on the small kettle from the 27? That is, will the small kettle fit firmly on the stand ?

Hi Mark! I don't have a 27 kettle so I haven't tried that out but since the kettle is Ø134 mmand the potstand for the mini is Ø95 mm it stands to reason that they will work well together. Cheers!

As you say, it's not a windshield: it is a potstand. A proper windshield is useful and saves lots of fuel in a windy environment. Decent bit of kit otherwise.

I've always thought Trangia missed the mark with that pot stand. I filed a step in mine so the simmer ring would fit, but I still like the pot to sit a little farther above the burner.

Been using this for years It trumps the 27 and 25 Lighter and less volume Annoying that the flame to pot gap is too short But if the burner holder was taller it would not fit in the pot I used a titanium foil windscreen, with no weight and almost full wind protection

I have never tried the Kelly kettle but from what I understand it needs a minimum of fire wood to boil up the kettle. Looks like a nice setup. Cheers!

@@RedswedeOutdoors You can use any fuel with kelly kettle not just wood or solid fuel. I put my trangia burner on tbis and works too, with fire dragon . You probably could use hexamine or other solid liquid fuels too. They are bulky and take up space, you can cook and boil water too. And trangia pots and pans fit too..

I like to make a wind screen out of a disposable aluminum turkey pan cut in to length you need and then fold it to get the correct height.it thicker than foil

That would make a much sturdier screen than just foil. It wouldn't fit inside the kit but could ride inside the bag instead. Cheers!

I just got figured out that you can nest the inside pan from the 27 over the 28t .that gives you two pot .it not to big .and I never carry both pots in my 27 I only carry the outer pot and the kettle. Having two pots for the 28 makes it so much more versatile. I also saw your video were you add water to the fuel to tame the dragon. That works very well . Did you know trangia tells you to do that on the yellow bag from what I hear. I m not sure because I'm a man and men don't read instructions. I love your videos I love to cook and find it challenging in a good way to do it outdoors with limited resources like alcohol stoves. Keep the videos coming. I'm going to retire soon maybe I'll make some myself. But you seem to have a better personality than me

Trangia triangle or a folding self-made wire tripod fixes the pot stand and simmer ring problems. Strange that Trangia never resolved this glaringly obvious design flaw. Brilliant bit of kit otherwise, though.

I totally agree that the Triangle allows for a better control of the simer ring. At the same time I like to avoid bringing two kits if I can, so I'll try to learn how to work around the disadvantages if possible. Cheeers Julian!
