In Colombia, there is a saying called don't give papaya which means is don't give a person the reason to rob you. It's just enough if you have an iPhone out in public you can be targeted in Colombia and other countries in South America. I met a woman in Bogota who got robbed for her iPhone, she was crossing the street using it and some guys on a motorcycle almost ran her over and took the phone. I was in downtown Medellin with a friend who had his iPhone on his belt holster and some guy put a screwdriver to his neck to try and take it. I was able to grab the hand with the screwdriver and blind the guy by throwing a drink I had to his face and he dropped the screwdriver and took off leaving the phone. is there any solution to this issue not really. I think the best thing you can do is surround yourself with positive people who like your friend can give you great advice on where to go in the country. Don't carry things that you can't replace and always have a backup just in case you lose something like a wallet or debit card. as I continue to travel I always am haunted by the fact that something can happen negatively and there's nothing I can do to stop that negative but prevent things to get worse if that means just giving people what they want if they're trying to rob you. At the end of the day, the most precious thing you have on you is your life.

Hello Tah. I want to thank you for having the courage of making this video. I'm glad your safe and I'm really sorry of what happened to you. I'm from Medellín and I know how insecure it is, you can be robbed in almost any place, even where you think your safe. Even as a local, knowing better the city, I've been caught off guard and I've been robbed in ugly ways. I thank you for making this video because I think foreigners that want to come to this city need to know that is a city with many security problems, and although they can come and have valuable experiences, there is a risk of this happening to them, especially if they want to live the city outside the tourist areas, in the popular neighborhoods... It bothers me that there isn't more honesty about what this city is like abroad, especially on the tourism pages.

Tah, I'm so sorry to hear about your experiences. Like everyone else commenting here, I wish you didn't have to go through this, I'm relieved that you are safe, and I wish you all the best in the future. I know you're not looking for advice, but I just want to offer one thought. Let your feelings tell you when you're ready to get out there again. Listen to yourself, to your body. They'll let you know when the time is right -- when you feel safe again, and when you don't feel so vulnerable. It could be a while or it could be a short time. Don't put a timetable on it. Just don't let anyone -- including yourself -- rush you back out there. Best.

Hi Tah... I'm so sorry for everything that happened to you in Colombia. It was better to leave since It was too much for your peace of mind. My wife and I are Costarricans, we just came last week from a 2 week trip to Colombia for our first time. In my mind, I accepted the risk that eventually, something bad could happen to us, but happily it didn't. We were lucky as latinos, to blend in the culture, even our way to talk was similar so we didn't attract any unwanted attention. We enjoyed our trip, but sometimes it was exhausting to be in alert mode, checking our surroundings for any harm, all the time. I hope you got to know what it the best in Colombia: its people... My heart aches to know they have to live with that insecurity day to day. I know this experience will not stop you traveling. Your experiences motivate us your followers, to keep dreaming about traveling to new wonderful destinations, to learn the culture to make us better people. Be safe !

Lo siento, Tah. I had a really scary experience with a cab driver in Medellín. He alluded to liking my appearance and taking me to a hotel. He drove around for what felt like an hour. He drove so fast and I didn’t think he’d ever let me out on my own terms. He finally did let me out. It was the most afraid I’ve been in my life. That same week, a couple helped me find my lost phone. It was a rollercoaster. I made friends. I stayed with a kind family and ate fruit from their trees and watched wild horses run. I saw Botero’s art and loved the music and the street vendors. I found so many things to appreciate in my few weeks there, but I was ready to leave when the time came. I don’t know how I feel now. I’ve never been back. I’m glad you are doing what feels right for you. Take good care. Sending you energy for safety and community. ❤️

I’m a traveler too. I’m currently in Medellin. One thing that is a basic thing I do is never speak English. I only try to speak English if I’m trying to impress a girl other than that it’s a no no. I lived in Dominican Republic for 10 years this gave me the background and preparation to travel any where. I can see scams coming a mile a way now. But what you been through I’ve been through the same thing as a male. You would not believe how many times a knife been pulled out on me if I told you. Not en Columbia though not yet.I also can feel that Medellin is a bit un predictable . But honestly that’s everywhere. It’s funny that you mentioned the guy starring. Because I had that same identical thing happened to me. Almost completely the same . The guy is a glue sniffer just how you describe. I was walking with a group of guys and they where trying to speak English with me and I responded and some how he over herd. That put a target on my back. Then a few days later he came up to me very aggressively a d I could not understand what he was saying. It was as if he was trying to rob me. He had his hands in his pocket. And got into my personal space. So I stopped walking to let him walk in front of me. He turned arround and shoulder bumped me . He kept his hands in his pocket the hole time. It happened so fast that when I got back to my hotel I became so angry that I allowed him to get so close to me. I contemplated not going back on that block because that street is full of gangs and if I would have beat him up I don’t know how many guys I’ve would have been fighting. But yeah Medellin has a look of a good place. But you have to remember it’s history. The culture of the people has to be effected to some degree with its history.

I just returned from a 10 day solo visit to Medellin, part of which was spent in the small town of Jardin (3.5 hours away by bus). Most of my time in Medellin was spent in Laureles where I felt fairly safe. Generally, I was back in or near my hotel by 9 or 10 pm. Tah, I am sad to hear you went through so much there. I look forward to your next adventure, which I hope will be far more positive.

@stevegfromnc3482
@stevegfromnc3482 Жыл бұрын
@@hiram7474 Yes, the bus from Terminal Sur. There are two companies that run the route, not too different. I used one going there and the other coming back. Tickets were around 30,000 COP one way. Safety wise I would suggest leaving in the morning so that you get to the other end well before dark. This has more to do with the way they pass/overtake other vehicles than with any perception of potential crime.

I never stay anywhere that’s “local”. I’d rather stay in a touristy or business areas and get a guide to take me elsewhere. As foreigners we need to be careful where we stay and what we do. I'm sorry about your experience 😔 I frequent Cartagena alot never been to Medellin. But one thing you must know is that many of these crimes are committed by many Venezuelans and locals. My chain was snatched in December in Cartagena I was able to catch 1 guy working with the one that snatched my chain the police came and put him in cuffs and they caught the other guy in 5 mins. I never got my chain back. But a crowd formed and wanted to beat the 2 men because they were from Venezuela. They were lucky that the police put them in the police van. Also if you have an iPhone don't use it much in the open. iPhone 12 and 13 sells for 10 to 14 million peso they will take the chance to snatch your new model iPhone.

Oh Tah, I'm so sorry you went through all of this. My heart goes out to you. I think you are very brave, not just for travelling solo but for sharing what is going on with your struggles. You made the right decision to leave Medellin, maybe in the countryside you may have felt safer but maybe not. At first listening to your story, I thought possibly your local friend was a bit paranoid but clearly not. I am sad for her to live like this, this type of grinding stress is not good. The harm that those men caused you and your friends with their threats and weapon is real and I hope that karma pays them a visit for their evil. A lot of men, even friends of mine that are seasoned travellers, are clueless to how it is to be a woman in this world. I realise that crime happens to men too, but women are more vulnerable in my opinion. For my daughter's sake, I hope this changes. Sending love and light to you :)

My Venezuelan wife was telling me just a few years ago that the crime rate in Venezuela was dropping drastically from the severe, severe violent crime that country had been going through. She told me that the "malandros" were leaving the country because there was nothing worth stealing there anymore. These malandros decided to continue robbing people in neighboring countries. They were moving to other countries like Colombia, Perú and others in South America but especially to Colombia. I thought she was exaggerating but to my horror I noticed the crime rate rising exponentially these last few years in Colombia. I can't turn on the local news from different cities in Colombia without seeing stories of Venezuelan nationals (extrangeros as they are called there) committing so many robberies and violent crimes. It's unbelievable! I'm so furious with the Colombian authorities for allowing this to happen. I love the Venezuelan people. I know that country well and never wanted to see xenofobia against them there but I cannot defend them in general anymore. Here in Houston, Texas we're also going through a major crime wave so I understand it's relative but that's no excuse for what's happening there in regards to much Venezuelan crime. Truly sad to see. Good luck to you Tah.

I agree with you here. I didn't really hear as many stories about Medellin even just 2 years ago. If you have to be THAT careful in the streets you really start to question is it worth it. It's really sad that they coaxed you into the robbery. Because when traveling part of the fun is meeting locals, and talking to people. Basically it is as if you can't trust anyone if you don't already know them. That defeats the purpose. I don't want to brand the whole place as bad, we all know it isn't, and we all know that bad can happen anywhere. But when you are on vacation or traveling it is really hard to have to be on guard all the time against violence. On guard against being scammed... sure. With all the negative I've been seeing coming out of Medellin it is not boding well. It's saddest because it is such a beautiful country with so many beautiful people. But it only takes a few to ruin it for the many.

so it seems to be focused on Medellin and indeed something is happening there. In the last year crime has SIGNIFICANTLY shot up.. and I keep hearing story after story and there's a few articles discussing the phenomenon. Medellin has never been safe, maybe it had its moments, everything has been concentrated in that city because of its economic, cultural and "social" development. Foreigners like Medellin because of the offer, women, sex, drugs, partying, disorder, etc. You can ask any foreigner MAN who has been in Colombia and not only in Medellin, he will tell you that his favorite city is Medellin, the other cities do not offer what Medellin has, for example my city is totally different from Medellin.

I'm sorry that happened to you, I too got my phone stolen before in Medellin. There are areas you can go and where you should not in Medellin. I would only try to stay in Poblado area during the night and go out using Ubers during the day to other neighborhoods. Then again I also had similar encounters in Barcelona, attacked in NYC by homeless (I live in NYC), and was beaten up by a random group of drunk racist guys in Boston. Asia is the safest place in the world, so if you came from Thailand, even most US cities are considered very dangerous. I miss Asia so much because the safety gives you the sense of freedom western worlds do not provide.

I saw more guys doing that than robbing you so I’m so sorry what happened to you but this event shouldn’t define or be a reason to others to judge our country. Using google maps only inside a commercial business or car. Replacing my drink if it was ever unattended, rarely speaking enginsh, and wearing dark shades the whole time.
