I've had my GXL for a year and 30,000km. It's a brilliant machine. Take out the back two seats and plenty of room. Paddle shifters are great, especially when driving on soft beach sand. Minimal annoying beeps and there's no ignition cut out to override - so that's good. Old school dash and instruments - functional and seemingly reliable. No squeeks or rattles. Engine pulls like a train and gearbox is well adjusted. I tow a camper trailer in 5th gear and occasionally 6th gear, if there is a following wind or long downhill stretch. 4x4 system will take most people most places. It's super impressive and that's on standard tyres. Sound system has way too much treble but is acceptable if treble is turned way down. As importantly, it's fun to drive. That's something I didn't expect. Mine is mostly used on long country trips and it's comfortable and no problem to get past any slower vehicles. Haven't pushed the handling limits so can imagine on wet roads it may be a bit of a handful. How many people expect to be able to drift a large SUV around bends? BTW I test drove the MuX and Pajero Sport and both were OK. Funnily enough, the Fortuner would not have been my first choice - but it was available and had a build date locked in. I'm so glad I ended up with the Fortuner - still making me smile.

In my opinion Toyota is trading way too heavily on past reputations in Australia. The reliability myth took a hit with the DPF saga and their interiors are third rate. Some cars drive reasonable well don’t justify the sometimes inflated price tag.

I have fortuner, two years, not my only car, but is the one that I drive the most. It´s true, slow and hard suspension, but it takes us (a family of four) to what ever trip we want to do. From routine home-school, all the way to where the road ends. It has come out of under the snow, being buried up to the hood. To pristine beaches in remote locations, thousand kilometers of dirt road with reasonable comfort and safety, so fahr, not a rattle or a squeak. this is a car for the adventure, not the city. Im happy with it and the selling value is great.

I cant understand why its so expensive in Australia. In New Zealand then GXL is is $59,990 and Limited (crusade) is $62,000. At that price point - it undercuts the MUX by $20k (I dont understand Isuzu NZs pricing either) and its basically the same as the Pajero Sport, its really really good value and they seem to sell decently - since the update I see just as many as I do the Pajero. But at over $70k for the crusade in Australia? You’d have rocks in your head to buy one

This thing is one of Toyota's best sellers here in Brazil and it is exactly like this. Way more expensive than it's competitors, but the reliability reputation makes the business. We don't have the Ford Everest, just the Chevrolet Trailblazer (related to the Isuzu) and the Mitsubishi Pajero that combined don't scratch a thing off the Toyota, here called Hilux SW4 and built in Argentina. It's a good product, but aging rapidly and maybe will need to detach it's life cycle from the Hilux pickup to maintain itself competitive

I have the first gen 2016 new fortuner (SW4) top spec V6. Didnt like all the plastic chrome in front and door handles and wood looking interior details like steering wheel with plastic on top. The original 18 inches wheels tucked in under the car made it very unstable in speed over 60km/h. Changed all plastic interior pieces to carbon and bought new Toyota steering wheel all leather for hi spec Hilux. Front runner roof rack. Lifted 2", 285 BF on 20". Widened with spacers 2". Fender flares. Custom grille, chrome blacked out. All black windows. Looks very good and handles high speed turns almost like a range rover sport. It is not fuel efficient when original and a bit worse now with big wheels and roof rack. The V6 1GR-FE is bullet proof and variable valve timing makes is enjoyable to drive with good low end torque.

Haven't watched your video to the end yet, but this new Fortuner suffers from the classic Toyota's "put it where it doesn't makes any sense" button placement technique! The rear diff-lock should be with downhill assist, low range selector, and other off-roading buttons, but it's miles away!! Why?! No one knows! It was the same in my 2014 Corolla and is the same in my FJ Cruiser (of course they did a much better job in FJ cruiser) Btw, I really like the design of the Fortuner in the back. Side is good, and front looks good, especially if you install a nice bullbar.

The Fortuner is probably one of the best, if not the best, best value 4x4s any carmaker makes, let alone Toyota. I live in Karratha WA - Toyota and Toyota Hilux Country, where anything other than a Toyota falls apart. FYI. the Fortuner is an upgraded Hilux with a body kit - i.e., all its mechanicals are Toyota Hilux - Australia's best-selling car for years - upgraded with rear discs and rear springs (i.e., the Hilux comes with drums and leaf-springs). I've had my Fortuner for 3 years and 55 000 kms, and it is still as solid as new despite me taking it to some of the toughest offroad conditions in the country. When I bought the Fortuner it replaced an 80 Series Land Cruiser (still one of the best-regarded 4x4s ever made) and a Nissan Dualis, and it does the jobs of both cars better than either of those cars! Eg, the traction control system and factory rear locker means that I have taken the Fortuner to places that even the 80 Series would have struggled to go and to places where most Fortuner owners can only dream of driving. Eg, there is a track up telegraph hill just outside Karratha which is ~45 degrees and full of loose rocks, gravel and holes, and the Fortuner made it up no trouble at all with no wheel spin at all. The track to Gregory's Gorge is like a Sunday family drive for the family in the Fortuner despite being 30+km long rough track and its 2 water crossings - one always deep and the other always rocky. The Fortuner has been incredibly tough - as tough as the 80 Series. I have also driven it at 180km/h on a gravel road with complete stability and traction, 150km/h for 2 hours on a highway to get home before sunset, and it handles sand like a beast - the best sand driver I have ever driven including 80 series and a 2012 Hilux. I.e., it handles sand amazing well with all traction control systems off - i.e., as a raw basic 4x4. I have also done ~2000 km road trips with my kids with the Fortuner packed to the gills and the kids in the rear seats, and the Fortuner did the trip with ease and in comfort even after 20+ hours driving. And it is perfect for the school run and putting around town too. It also only cost me ~$50 000, which is amazing value for Toyota that can do anything and go virtually anywhere. I could take the Fortuner anywhere that a 300 Series owner would take their car - more places, because a 300 Series owner wouldn't take their $100 000+ car half the places I will take the Fortuner because I'm not worried about damaging a very expensive vehicle. I have also made no mechanical changes to the Fortuner because it comes out of the factory good enough for me to take it anywhere. I've improved the all-terrains and I’ve put on 32-inch all-terrains, but a suspension lift would be pointless because it goes everywhere I need to go with the factory suspension. And the factory suspension is solid around town, but also good for rough tracks too. And I bought it using Toyota's Access finance with a 6% interest rate and which gives multiple choices to refinance or sell it. Basically mate, you are clearly clueless and have no idea of the capabilities of cars. I suggest you actually push them to their limits to discover their limits. You haven't gone anywhere close with the Fortuner. The Fortuner is severely underrated because most reviewers ignore it and/or do not even try to push it anywhere to its full capabilities. My suggestion - GET ONE WHILE YOU CAN! When I bought my 2021 Fortuner they were rare around Karratha, but they are now everywhere as the locals are finally waking up to how good and capable they are.

Depends on what you are buying it for? if you want a reliable small 4WD that is a very capable offroader - it would be hard to beat. I have also been looking at the Isuzu MU-X. When i compare the 2 - both have a good reliable engine, MU-X has a better boot and more leg and head room in 3rd row. MU-X probably has more tech and updated interior, MU-X seems to have better steering/handling. What i hate about the MU-X - electronic handbrake, softer body panels (seen heaps of MU-X's with dings in the door panels), excessive tyre wear (yes there is a big class action against Isuzu at the moment), lengthy wait times for the MU-X - heard that some people are waiting 12-18 months - by the time you get it - it will look different. Toyota has old style handbrake, tougher body panels, but less space/headroom in 3rd row as well i hate the fact that the seats dont fold flat into the floor. But hey at end of the day if one wants a 4WD that can last a long time and is a very capable offroader - not a soccer mums pavement princess, then the Toyota is still old school and parts availability will no issue in years to come. With BOWEN's new emission laws (UTE TAX) - ill be surprised if ISUZU and MITSUBISHI dont leave the market - making future parts availability a nightmare.

Check out the 4WD comparison review and then make up your mind. Wonder why people in the bush love their Toyota 70 Series - easy to fix, parts availabliity - none of this fancy tech that is likely to get broken and leave you stranded in the bush.

Yes yes and yes but Toyota resale, reliability, remote dealer network is a no brainer for someone who wants to do some serious travel in Aus. Would I buy one? Maybe, as soon as i returned home from my trip I'd probably move on though... Very entertaining video none the less gents haha!!

I hate it when people justify its shortcomings by saying “reliability”. No wonder toyota is so slow in improving the cabin and features of the fortuner. And the ride quality is still arguably the worst in its segment! Passengers won’t be comfortable for long rides especially on not so good roads. Not everyone wants to own a car for 20 years! Kias are pretty reliable too but at least they don’t sacrifice too much.

Sadly, this is the only full size SUV available in India. No Ford, No Mitsubishi, No Nissan!. So, Toyota is here to take the full opportunity and they doubled the price in last 5 years. It is AUD1.1K here. Toyota just helped many customers to move to luxury segment. You will see lots of X1,X3, Q3, GLA etc. With a bit of a compromise they get into the luxury segment.

I love my 2016 Fortuner Ltd. Mine is black and has all the TRD options including the grille and tailgate, monsoon shields etc, and I have a big bull bar with giant spotlights. Big offset black steelies and chunky tyres... it looks way, way tougher than a stock Fortuner. I love it. Nice big basic sporty SUV with great handling, you can hurl it into corners at great speeds (140kmh into backroad corners in the wet) and it pulls around. It looks awesome, and with the dyno tune and other few mods I've had done, it goes hard too. Great SUV, very happy with it. Pajero sports look ugly, as do Isuzu; Ford Everests are for the aspiring middle class soccer mums who tootle around suburban streets, and are massively overpriced for what little additional features they have. I really disagree with the majority of this review, it seems like needless whinges about things that don't actually matter. This is a utilitarian vehicle and does a great job of it.

As far as looks... the Classic 1st edition is still supreme IMO. Sold my 2015 ..loved it. Looking for a 2007 4x4. I'll soundproof it, add new entertainment system and update the suspension. (and take out those silly fold up rear seats!) . Living in the Philippines Fords are not an option with the long repair times and EXPENSIVE parts. .. Hard no. The new MUX are nice. Rented one for 2 days loved it..but not in my budget.

We compared all 4 when we were looking around last year, we were hoping the Pajero Sport would be the go due to its price and the fact we were coming out of an old Pajero, but the PS was the most disappointing out of the 4. The interior was cramped as its very narrow, the boot layout was rubbish and the drive was underwhelming, especially off the mark. The Everest was just uncomfortable and didn't really get much of a look, the way the second a third rows have a weird slope to them when folded didn't help either. The Fortuner and the MU-X were very tightly contended for us. They drove similar enough, the comfort and ergonomics in both was similar, the price was pretty much the same (Crusade vs LS-T) and both have a good reliability reputation. We ended up with the Fortuner due to a couple of small things, like off road capability (driver aid calibration mainly) and delivery times. The MU-X was going to be a 10 month wait, we waited 5 weeks for the Fortuner. While I do agree with a lot of what's been said in this review, they're certainly not quite as bad as what they are made out to be in this video, and there's no way a cramped, budget built Pajero Sport is a better car.

Drove the top-spec mu-x for a couple of weeks with work. Hated it. Sluggish pickup, the interior is rubbish (I hate that row of levers with no dials or buttons). The electric assist steering is overrated. I want one of these cars to feel like I’m driving a big car. Ended up buying a fortuner and love it. Sure, the handling is boring, but compared to our smaller bmw, all of the cars in the class are boring, and the interior is cheap and tacky no matter mu-x, paj or fortuner. Fortuner feels better built, more punchy and far better suited for its intended purpose - weekend adventures!

1. NEVER GET A naturally aspirated v4 in the fortuner. Always get the 4.0 v6 2. It is a cheap Land Cruiser, rugged but with mush less tech, LCDs, cameras.. most of which you can install, but will cost you abit. I am talking from the UAE, only get the v6 ones or else just get the Xterra, much more better look for cities and more tech, but not as good in off-roading tho

Test drove all of them and we bought the Fortuner, dont know where you got your pricing from our GXL with leather was 60k. That money was just getting a base MUX or Everest. I like the dash in the tuna i dont want to be looking at big stupid screen like in the Ford. The Tuna is awesome off road and easy on the diesel, 7.2 on the hiway and 9.4 around town. Ford customer service is garbage and would never own one after the issues my mates Ranger has had.

Only modification is a retune of the ecu done a few weeks ago but thats it. it was the high end 4x4 variant and is used for floods and the shitty roads my country has to offer. no wonder after how many years of almost remaining the same its still on of Toyota's best sellers

It's solid cause it's a Toyota, but it ain't huge nor intimidating unless you live in India or China, where most people generally drive smaller cars. In the US the Fortuner would look like a joke compared to cars like the Explorer, Bronco, Traverse, Acadia, and especially the Durango. And if you look at large family SUVs that are, granted far more expensive than this, they also retain that tough look. And pickup trucks as well. In the North American market, the fortuner is a joke. The Middle East has fortunes, a lot of them, and they never look like anything decent compared to other SUVs that drive around their streets

"go on side"? I think you mean, "it makes the the other cars move aside"? Also, as the previous comment(er) mentioned, the Fortuner isn't big compared to the vast variety of the cars/utes on our roads. It's got a lot of competition with the likes of the Ford Everest, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, the Isuzu MU-X and many more in its segment. But I do disagree with the statement saying that the Fortuner doesn't have a tough look - it's definitely a beaut! The Fortuner is a solid SUV, but it lacks too many features that it should have for a car of its price. However, I know that in asian markets the Fortuner is more of a status symbol than a practical, off-roading SUV-truck hybrid here in Aus, which means Toyota can get away with adding less features but charging more for it.
