There were so many little things in this chapter that made me tear up. The bible Kuma always carries was the book Bonnie always looked through as a child. The "If you were to go on a vacation, anywhere in the world, where would you go?" line, that was introduced to us in the scariest scene of making the Straw Hats disappear in Sabaodi, was actually what he used to ask Bonnie😭 Not to mention the first time we hear him ask that question was in Thriller Bark when he asked Perona where she'd want to go. . . Perona. Another young pink haired girl like his daughter. Damn you, Oda!

Bonnie must have tremendous willpower. She's only 12 years old and had all this sad, heart-wrenching information downloaded into her head at once, it's impressive that she didn't go into a catatonic state like Luffy after Ace died and was able to process it all after one night (and after crying a lot)

The whole “Dragon is a fraud” thing is dumb because they said that they just got enough forces in the present to face the WG. So back when Ginny was captured, a few years after the RA was made, they definitely didn’t have enough man power to rescue Ginny. Also Dragon has a lot of different people to worry about. If he messes up the entire RA falls apart and everything they fought for would be for nothing. He has to think like a general while Luffy can be impulsive because he literally on has his small crew to worry about. Also when Luffy fights the WG it’s normally an ambush done by what the WG saw as a small no name crew and not the most wanted man in the world like Dragon is. They didn’t start taking Luffy seriously until after the time skip

I agree with everything you're saying, but Dragon as a character is a massive disapointment to me. @@ArachnidSyther That’s completely fair and I feel the same way. I myself have never actually cared for Dragon because he hasn’t done anything outside of help Luffy at Loguetown and apparently train Sabo. Its people not understanding what the concept of a revolutionary army is, the Revolutionaries are dedicated to the cause of freeing everyone from the CDs, them suddenly being more invested and willing to risk it all now cause one of their own was captured would betray their entire cause because no one persons suffering is more or less important then someone else's. Storming the gates with the army to save Ginny sure, would have been nice to read, but it would have been a selfish action that spits in the face of the entire point of a revolutionary army. Revolutionaries and pirates are just not the same thing. And I'm sure in universe Ginny the revolutionary would also agree.

9:25 honestly I think the simplest solution is the most reasonable one. Dragon probably wanted to save her, but they simply didn't have the firepower yet, and freeing the slaves in the present time raid was at least partially an act of atonement for not being able to save Ginny
@illoney5663
@illoney5663 9 ай бұрын
I think there's also something else to consider. In Sabaody, we saw a Celestial Dragon attempt to kill Camie out of spite once she realised that's what the Straw Hats were doing. If they went in to save Ginny, they'd probably already know she was in the Revolutionary Army and thus might've just killed her.

Honestly I'm really hoping that Bonney's biological father never gets revealed too, but for a slightly different reason. The thing is, what happened to Ginny happens all the time to people all around the one piece world. It's not unique to her. The anger that we feel towards this specific nameless celestial dragon should be the anger we feel towards ALL celestial dragons(except Mjosgard, he's cool now) And as long as he remains nameless, we will continue to project that anger towards the entire world noble system as a whole, which serves the story way better. The end goal this is leading up to ISNT taking revenge on any single celestial dragon, but rather to tear down the entire system that made these atrocities possible in the first place. Also, the trauma olympics are so funny to me. Powerscaling is so last season, we traumascale now.

It makes perfect sense why Dragon didn't launch an all-hands-on-deck rescue mission to save Ginny, and that's because the man has impulse control and isn't an idiot. They make it very clear in this flashback that the Revolutionary Army is still a small operation that's limited in their abilities, and we know they didn't have the resources to launch a full-scale attack on the Celestial Dragons for another 14 years until the present story. No matter how much he cared about Ginny and wanted her free, Dragon would have been aware it was impossible to rescue her from Marijoa and that making an attempt would only destroy their own forces. Ginny was a Revolutionary commander because she believed in their goals, she wouldn't want her life to come at the expense of the entire group, and she _definitely_ wouldn't have wanted Dragon, Ivankov, or Kuma especially to throw their lives away on a last-ditch effort to rescue her.

One thing I like about Kuma, and just the story in general, is the fact that Kuma is a pastor. I am a Christian myself, and all too often, a major cliché that I see in media is the corrupt church or the bad person believer. It's really nice to see a religious/spiritual character that is genuinely a really good person. You know, what most Christians aspire to be, or should be aspiring to be. And with him, Kuma has become my favorite side character, and I don't think he'll be replaced. Also, the celestial dragons are horrible and deserve every storm that comes their way.

Well, it doesn't help the only ones they mostly had contact with *were the Dutch* who were renowned for being drunken gambling idiots who would convince Japanese nuns to convert just to sleep with them. They didn't commit atrocities like the Spanish or British _but they were kind of useless perverts_ So most Japanese media will flip between that or the atrocities they witnessed at other island nations. It makes total sense how rare Kuma types are (Heiter from Frieren is a good guy, but also blatantly a bit of that first drunk stereotype) You can usually tell before even meeting a Christian character based on his dress and the architecture of his church. Oh and of course The Vatican is "Always Evil" because the Dutch trying to educate Japanese on European history made them all sound like crazy people 😂😂😂 "And then we warred for 138 years, but because it stopped and started we decided it's simpler to call it The Hundred Years War" Japanese fella who just lived through the hundreds of mini skirmishes making up the Feudal Era decade: *YO, YOU FOOKIN WOT M8* " _But wait, there's more!_ Just wait until you hear about the War of the Roses and The Tulip War! Reading the manga and watching the show, my headcanon is Kuma is a christian, in a sense. They have crosses, Ussop gives chopper a cross so they can peotect themselves from evil in thriller, Kuma is the son of a pastor, and lives in a church. He does his healing service on Sunday.we have saints, they call Kuma a saint. Also, i read that manga makers use christian imagery because its cool. So while not stated, Kuma is a stand in for christian values, in my eyes.

Just like how the moment she got sick they got rid of her.

The reason why Dragon didn't set an entire mission to save Ginny from Mary Geosie , is because he has far bigger and more selfless goals like saving the entire world instead of just one person. He is not a crackhead pirate , he is the leader of the revolutionary army. He won't just go an suicide assault just to save one person like his crackhead father and son , his goal is to liberate the entire world. So he is just a far more realistic , and honestly , more heroic person than compared to his lunatic child who outright says he is not a hero , just a pirate , and won't become a hero unless his friends got a major involvement. His goal is to save the entire world , which makes him see that putting a lot of effort just to save one person unnecessary , especially knowing that he has no capability of dealing with the world government as of yet.

Its understandable. Back then Dragon didnt have the forces to stage a rescue mission like that. Top players like Karasu and Sabo weren't even at their peak strength. I have a few things to say about chapter 1098 but first i wanna say i really do appreciate Oda not holding back when showing the realities of slavery, especially state sponsored slavery, hes done it since Sabaody, the chapters where Camie is captured and the slavers talk about her as an "it" and a "product" is so hard for me to read, but i do like that Oda actually shows the horrors of slavery as much as he can in the age rating for OP. Also 1. Another parallel to Sabaody, im sure we've all heard the comparisons and we saw the exact situation that happened to Ginny in Charlos introduction where he kills that guy and forces his fiance to become his new "wife". 2. The Boa's sisters backstory HEAVILY implies this also happened to them, except somehow worse cause they were 12, 11, and 9 when they were enslaved for like 4 years iirc, thats what "forcing them to eat DFs" and "the first men we knew were monsters" implies. Thats to say Ginny is the most outright Oda has talked about slavery and the sexual violence a system like that inevitably creates, but its not something hes avoided talking about whenever he focuses on slavery in One Piece

While this was the first time it was very clear with the Celestial Dragons there have been indications of this type of stuff multiple times: 1) Saint Charlos intro was literally stealing someone’s wife and shooting the husband. What do people think was going to happen to her as his new 17th wife?? 2) Boa and sisters were slaves and hate men. I wonder what happened to them 🤔 3) Viola and Dofi in dressrosa sbs I believe was heavily implied to have a relation but he’s the guy that killed her sister and overthrew her father so she wouldn’t be with him willingly. The main demographic for One Piece might be young kids but Oda had been dark in the same way multiple times before and in other ways too like cannibalism and slavery.

It's true that there have been multiple instances in One Piece that have hinted at or depicted darker themes such as violence, slavery, and exploitation. While the series is primarily targeted towards a younger audience, Oda has not shied away from exploring these mature subjects, often using them to highlight the injustices and struggles faced by various characters. The Celestial Dragons, in particular, have been consistently portrayed as a group of individuals who believe themselves to be above the law and engage in various forms of cruelty and abuse. Their treatment of others, as seen in the examples you mentioned, serves to emphasize the power imbalances and societal structures that contribute to suffering and oppression. Oda's willingness to tackle these darker themes is commendable, as it allows him to delve into the complexities of human nature and explore the societal issues that affect the world of One Piece. It also adds depth and realism to the narrative, making it more engaging and thought-provoking for readers of all ages. While some may find these darker elements to be inappropriate for a shonen manga, it is important to acknowledge that they play a significant role in shaping the story and conveying important messages about justice, compassion, and the fight against oppression. Oda's ability to balance these darker themes with the overall lighthearted and adventurous tone of One Piece is a testament to his storytelling skills and ability to connect with a wide range of readers.

@@Suto_Ko yep but even better he shows that some can and have changed. Take Mjosgard for example. Queen Otohime’s actions changed him and he seemed to have become a good person. Most if not all the Celestial Dragons are prob just raised to not know any better, being told they are gods and they grow up not knowing what others think of them or if they’re actually being cruel. They prob saw their parents doing those same messed up things and were like it must be ok to do them myself as well. I’m so glad Oda made people like Mjosgard or Dofi’s dad. It shows the group isn’t just bad/evil for the sake of evil. It’s more complex than that if you think about it.

The only way this could have been worse for me would be if Ginny was made to suffer some kind of locked-in syndrome because of this disease, unable to communicate with those she loved until she died. So many people in One Piece have mothers who suffered or sacrificed for them. I grew up with that experience myself and while I was young I was both angry and sad at different times because of it. Now, I'm a man and I take care of my daughters and my wife with all my heart and compared to growing up caring for my disabled mother, this is all easy - practically icing on the cake even on the worst days. Sometimes I even feel bad for those who never suffered like I did as a child, because they don't know how good they have it. RIP Ginny though, what a boss. She got her daughter OUT of that tennryuubito cesspool and back to the man she knew would dedicate his life to protecting her. I know why Bonney can smile. She can smile because she knows how much she was loved.

I’m gonna be honest , Sanjis back story was sad; but I feel like Robin had it the worst out of a lot one piece character. Like her only friends dying words to her “ no matter who are no one is born in this world to be alone.” Then she watched him freeze to death , met and witnessed her moms death in the same day, survived a buster call , being chased as child by any and everyone that wanted her bounty . That has to be the hardest if not top 10 saddest backstories.

This portion of Kumas backstory between losing Ginny and getting Bonney reminds me a lot of Yhorm, the Lonely Giant from Dark Souls 3. As a lord, Yhorm risked everything and fought unflinchingly as a one-man vanguard. Following the loss of the one he wished to protect, he forsook his shield. But one day, in place of his shield, a left-hand notch was added to his machete. Enabling the smashing technique of a berserker with nothing left to lose. For he was no longer interested in self preservation, nor the protection of others.

9:37 this was so real. I was not really enjoying one piece as much until water 7 and had tried to guessed the entire story from this arc and the next and it was so wrong. I saw none of it coming and was blown away by how much I enjoyed it more than what I crafted in my head. From that point on I just said “alright oda you got me I’ll just let you take me along this ride and enjoy it”

I feel like right when I read the chapter, the implications of what happened to Ginny (although they were clear to me) didn't shock me as much as they shocked most readers. It's like I registered it, I put it aside and I moved on. However as I sit with it and think about the story day after day, the horror and the outrage of it stir in me more and more and it just keeps resonating. This was in my opinion a good chapter to have before break week because it really benefits from us sitting with it and nurturing all the emotions it gave us

My theory is that Mariejoa is going to be destroyed, since it's heavily implied that the Redline, and Fishman Island by extension, will be destroyed by the end of the series. When Mariejoa is destroyed, the CDs will have the choice of fleeing and heading down to earth to live among the commoners, or commit to their delusions of godhood. We already see foreshadowing of this by the fact that none of the CDs have really registered what food being cut off from Mariejoa implies. So I think that the majority of the CDs will stay on Mariejoa as it's destroyed and meet the same fate as it, while the handful of survivors will escape to the world below and have a shot of redemption. That way Oda can write the genocide of CDs, without having to draw our heroes mercilessly killing unarmed people.

The thing about what happened to Ginny is that we already knew they did this. We have known since Sabaody. We just had it happen this time to someone we knew a nit and saw the aftermath. Bonus tragedy: In Sabaody who was the one who stopped Zoro when he was going to lay the smack on the celestial dragon that was forcing a woman to be his wife? It was Bonney.

tbh if we ever do find out who took ginny for a "wife" im afraid i would turn into "look at this specific absolute asshole that did this" and take away from the issue at large that most if not all of the nobles are at liberty to do that to multiple women and take advantage of it without second thought. the individualistic approach of singling out one bad guy to beat up and solve the problem works for luffy and the mechanics of shounen manga, but seeing as this concerns the singular organisation that opposes the system and the greater evil it just isn't the place for it imho
@Birthday888
@Birthday888 9 ай бұрын
Eh. We already had that with Charloss though. I feel like we've had too many examples of CDs being human scum that it doesn't matter if they show us who Bonney's biological father was, the issue is still very much systematic. Like, I doubt anyone would argue that it was only this specific CD that commited sexual violence on slaves.

I don't understand why people are so shocked.... this was always heavily implied in the universe ever since Boa was introduced. Celestial dragons aren't all men but Boa HATES men. She's also the most beautiful woman and you think a bunch of incredibly creepy, awful, narcissistic men didn't touch her? Female slaves are also largely synonymous with SA, this shouldn't really be a surprise to anyone just because now there's tangible proof in the form of a child, it's not like Oda showed anything besides Bonny's existence, the SA has always been implied. There's a reason Boa loves the only man who's never lusted after her. that being said.... I'm sorry its such a rough topic for you and I hope you are able to see someone to help you figure your reactions out, and it gets better. Thank you as always for posting such good content

The first anime I ever watched was Full Metal Alchemist 2003 while it was still on Netflix. And let me tell you I was not expecting something as heinous rape to be implied in such an on the nose fashion. I knew anime could be dark but never expected it to touch on themes THAT dark. And then I watched Boa’s backstory and the way Oda wrote it, clearly implying it but not explicitly saying it and just leaving it up to the viewer to form their own conclusions (even though there’s only one conclusion that could be drawn from that information). Stuff like this is just so incredibly gut wrenching.

I understand that you say you're specifically looking for the jackass that did that to Ginny. But the thing is, almost all of the Celestrial Dragons do that. And they've always done that. Every single time one steals a "new wife" from the normal people. Just like with what happened to the nurse back in Sabaody. And just like Boa and her sisters. They just treat anyone that's not in their group like objects and trash to be thrown away when they're done with them. They're all vile and disgusting. Oda's just reminding us of that, since it seems some people have forgotten.

I cannot bring myself to watch most disney movies anymore because I am not OK with watching characters lose their families. Lion King, Bambi, Fox and the Hound, etc. Just can't take it, man. I don't want to be showing that stuff to my kids either - they don't need to know trauma like that until they can process it emotionally. One Piece has scenes like this and I can only tolerate it because justice DOES come, even if the arc of the universe is long. Nobody ever stops the hunter in Bambi, though. Fuck that guy.

Why couldn't Dragon just be too busy saving another country and him argue with Kuma that he can't value one girl's life over a country? Would make sense and we would see Dragon actually putting in work for once. I'm not asking to see him fight but put him on a Den Den Mushi hiding behind a wall in a fight or some shit or commanding a battlefield. At least give Dragon a story consistent reason because if we see him fight and he's Garp or higher level with how power scaling goes its gunna be mad

On the front of Dragon, the issue is...I don't think at that time, they were ready to stage an assault on Mary-Geoise, and weren't until the recent Revely. The Revolutionary Army started out with pretty much nothing and assisting where they could find revolutions already kicking up, and building steam from there. They didn't go from where they were to where they are not overnight. And speaking of "When the flashback ends", keep in mind that this is all a flashback as Bonney is being lifted by Saturn as he orders marines to headshot her, and Kuma is mid-flight to _somewhere,_ so we have to think Kuma is about to "Omae wa Mou Shinderu" Saturn

I think people who condem Dragon forget that the revolutionary army is trying to be a long term solution to the world goverment. Sure Luffy would go after Ginny regardless of consecuence in this situation (as he did with Robin) but Luffy is not trying to bring down the goverment, as much as he opposes it, he just does it when it directly stands of the way of something he wants. Dragon on the other hand is trying to bring war, to bring revolution and to absolutely dismantle the goverment, to do that you can´t sacrifice a ton of resources and people anytime someone you care about gets captured (regardless of how much you might or migth no want to) because it could bring the whole operation down and then everything is lost. When you lead a cause like a revolution a lot of it is based in the hope and emotion people have regarding way of living, the people on the revolutionary army don´t owe their loyalty to Dragon in the way the strawhats do it to Luffy, the might respect his leadership but their loyalty is with the cause, movilizing them for personal matters (regardless of wether they also cared about Ginny or not) is losing sight of the general cause. Add on that it wasn´t some random dude that took her but a celestial dragon, which you might say aligns with the cause since they are the top of the goverment, but it's clear they can barely take wins in small nations, the scale and consecuences of an attack of that caliber might have ended their efforts (specially since this was 12-10 years ago when they were relatively new) completely or set them back years of planning. Sure it sucks and seems cold, but big scale change is often like that.

What I tend to get from Dragon and the rest of the Revolutionary Army not going after Ginny was that they just did not have the man power. Like yeah Fisher Tiger climbed the wall alone, but they were not looking for a random escaped fishman slave, but they have all eyes out for Dragon and his gang. Most likely they could not have sent a rescue mission that would not have cost more lives then they save. That is just how I read it though, and for sure I could be totally wrong.
