I'm back to Vietnam! I lived in the South of Vietnam for almost a year in 2020, and this time I'm back to explore the North of Vietnam and its capital. Vietnam is one of the few remaining communist countries in the world, so being here is like being back in the Soviet Union, and I was always curious about it!

when I was in Hanoi and asked, why there was no hate for the Americans, I was told because the French where so so so much worse. My respect for the viatnamese people knows no limit. They stood up against the biggest bullies in the world, first expelling the french, then repelling the americabs and at the end the chinese from the north. When I was working for a high tech company in Silicon Valley, California (Sunnyvale) many of my best friends had been Vietnamese refugees from the American Vietnamese war. They are wonderful, smart, creative, nice, hard working, wonderful amazing, great people. I love Vietnam and the Vietnamese people.

Excellent video, I really enjoyed it. I have never known much about VN except my family member died there and one lost his left eye. I admire their courage and mourn the death but the war was a waste of human lives and destruction of a beautiful nation. Remember, the war in VN was overwhelmingly unpopular in the US but my family members had to go. One was Army and one Air Force. A horrific time. I hope the Vietnamese people can thrive and have peace as I do for all. Interesting thing about the weather, so many vets I know or have known often spoke of the heat. They seemed to always talk of the heat but almost never of the things they saw in combat.

You are right, thank you for sharing your story. From Vietnam, peace and prosperity are things most people here hope for. No more wars and tragic stories. About the heat, yes, it's kind of unbearable even for the local. The temperature may go up to 35 to 40 degrees C (or over 100 degrees F), but not only the heat but also the moisture in the air, which makes people feel way hotter than it really is.

You are quite right, Cong is very knowlegable, articulate and wise beyond his years ( especially by American's low standards), Many Vietnamese, Cambodian and Laotian refugees came to California during and after the war & settled in a very right wing place called Orange County California, (Near Disneyland of all places) The Vietnamese kids were amazing students, intuitive, adaptable, friendly and academically superior to most American students by far, Top of the class, fast learners and very hard workers, most Vietnamese kids i knew had jobs after school to help support their families as well as studying very hard day in and day out & weekends,, Some of the white washed American's in my home town in Orange County ( Close to what today is called Little Hanoi) were quite bigoted & racist, even jealous of these wonderful people's happiness & will to succeed and prevail despite the odds and discrimination made against them, The right wing's despicable behavior and treatment of these refugee people in those times was beyond horrible, just as lowbrow and luddite minded as anyone could be.. I am Thankful because i was drafted into military service during the draft turned "lotto" in 1972, i had protested and feared the war since 7th grade and when i turned 18 my ticket was chosen in the lotto,, but i did not run to Canada or elsewhere, i just stood up to them and told them the truth, that the war was illegal from the get go, and because it was a conflict and not an officially declared war, it was a conflict of my interest, personal freedom as an American and bviolated human rights of the people we were killing, so i choose not to fight ,,period, So after telling the draft board to literally F-Off at the recruitment office, i walked away & i never heard a word from the draft board or military again. At that time in '72 the war effort was waning fast, as anti war protests in the US were growing out of control, Kids were leaving the country, or overdosing on drugs, & going to jail to escape that fate of serving these warmongers & killers or committing suicide to avoid a life of war. All this became far too much for the conservative establishment to handle,, and in reality the US had already lost the war long before 1972, Something the proud and pathetic idiots just could not accept after spending so much money and American lives wasted over so many years to no avail & yet still being total losers to a 3rd world undeveloped country & the much dreaded cold war commies coming to get them (in their small and narrow minds). I love the Vietnamese people, Cambodians and Laotians & all asians in general, beautiful culture, happy resourceful people,( though i wish the Chinese would stop killing so many sharks just for their dorsal fins to make soup),, If only that segment of ignorant Americans could get past their bigoted & racist John Wayne man-man tough guy attitude & entitled hollywood mentality, Those Hollywood war heroes that many Americans still embrace and even worship as their idea of liberty and freedom and the American way is just totally ass backward BS..

There are young Russian people who hate their heritage and know nothing about what life was like in the 1990s in Russia, when the country was under U.S. domination. Eli seems to have escaped this trend and has found a way to integrate past and present. No wonder she seems happy!

I’m sure their style of communism is heavily laced with free market economics. A good friend of mine who was in the United States military and stationed in Vietnam during the war went back there with his daughter and was very impressed with the friendly people and he even met a veteran of the Vietcong who fought against him around the same time he was there. War is so depressing when you know that as individuals we can get along but our governments and evil greedy men won’t allow us to.

I liked Hanoi more than anywhere else in Vietnam. Yeah, it's dirty and very busy, but the people are friendly and interesting, and there is something unique about the place. Great video!

Yes on a very superficial level Hanoi seems really good. The food is wonderful the girls are beautiful and all is good with the country but Vietnam is a country of ilusion and nothing really is as it seems but that ilusion is not your business so just enjoy !

Thanks, Eli. I travelled over whole South Vietnam in 1974, including Saigon, Hue, Da Nang, Qui Nhon, Da Lat, Tay Ninh, etc usually in a large military plane. Then I left for Bangkok, Thailand.

Vietnam was strongly influenced by the Soviet Union which provided them with lots of weapons and economic aid to fight against the Americans during the Vietnam War, which was a part of the Cold War.

Viet Nam never denied they can win the war without the support of CCCP and China. But nothing kind of occupation, both CCCP and China never send troops herre, they send equipment and advisor but not troops.

I lived always in the north as opposed to you, and really far into the countryside where the communist feel is much stronger than in Hanoi haha. Im in the south for a couple of years now though. Soviet union never colonized nor explored the global south, unlike the west. They do were internationalists, in the sense they wanted to kill countries nationalism. But the Liberalism is also anti nationalists and explore the poor counties in the name of Profit. Russia and China nowdays don't want us to adopt theyr government system unlike the west and USSR. They want us from the global south to be independent and free from the west. In a multi polar world

Indeed whole Eastern Bloc acted in a rather cooperating and non imperialistic way compared with the western countries like USA, France, GB and Germany. US-interventions to its economical advance are still a chosen method, exploitation of resources and holding countries in financial dependencies as well. The bigger part of the world hates the responsible authorities for this, but people in western countries tend to turn from these uncomfortable realities and possible will need a decade to realise, that western influence is on the downfall and that the USA are an unstable empire beyond it's zenith and already in decline.
