Some fifty years ago my late grandmother had probably 10, maybe more, similar DIY trap buckets on her land. We gradually quit it when the catch became mostly baby hedgehogs rather than mice. It appeared that as the trees in the area matured, the former field became a forest, and hedgehogs took over and drove away smaller rodents.

Yeah, Shawn tested a wide-table tilt trap somewhat similar to this that worked very well too, but it was made in Sweden(?) by a company long since out of business. (I couldn't find any for sale on the internet.) The wideness of the table seems to give rodents a false sense of security, even more so than the usual walk-the-plant type tilt traps. This is cool in that it has a cap so they can't easily jump off/out, and putting the bait up in the roof is a great idea. Still attracts rodents, but the trap mechanism isn't thrown off by the extra weight. Just a great design.

The "flip-floor" needs a damper, so that, when it drops and snaps back into place, there is no clicking sound that could scare away some of the rodents. Also, the trap door could be more stable at the middle, so that the mouse will go completely towards the tip, before gravity takes it down. A few mice seemed to find the perfect balancing point where they would not fall. A delayed drop, along with a rubber damper to make it silent, perhaps?

This is a clever variant of the old bucket trap we used in my childhood, and probably my parents childhood too. Back then you'd just take a bucket, put a waxed paper over it, secure it with rubberbands, cut an x into the paper and then smear the middle with butter. This is the same principle, but the balanced hinge makes it better for handling different sizes of rodents as it's more "digital" in it's behaviour..

This idea is not new. Here in Australia we used a galvanised steel version 45 years ago. It was basically the same idea except the top could be entered from both ends with the treats in the middle. It had rubber grommets on the trap door and made absolutely no noise. I was sadistic back in those days and preferred not to put any water in and leave it for a few days before i checked. I used to laugh so much because there would only be 2 or 3 in there but they were so fat that their feet could hardly touch the ground. These were obviously the alpha mice who just ate all their mates to stay alive. Then I'd put some water in and watch them sink cause they were so heavy. Oh those days were so much fun.
