Honestly, fios is finally worth getting now. They stopped their traditional bundles and contracts for 'mix and match' which means no more rate increase. Plus they upgraded their software and hardware over the past year

I cut the cord in 2017, got youtubetv so I have my sports and dvr, saving me 50 or so a month. 3 years later YTTV doubles their price, internet only goes up, YTTV dumps NESN and I'm back to fios just to get my NESN!!! Maybe optimum tv will get to ma. some day, I hope

@soncosa That sucks. I’m currently evaluating Locast and Philo, which doesn’t have any sports channels. But I’m okay with that.

Well made video, I love that you are using Ubquiti equipment. They make some fantastic stuff. Specifically, I love their AP since they are PoE which makes for easy deployment in large homes or for businesses. I will say that the real price of Internet is higher then the price quoted in the video. 100mbps is $77.95 with Comcast even with owned modem if your off the new customer price. Also something else that I feel is worth bringing up are data caps. Where I am originally from we had a ISP called Armstrong Cable. They have a data cap and lower tier internet packages have caps as low as 300Gb of data. The higher caps come if you bundle service or buy the higher tiers. Basically, what I'm getting at is that more often then not the best way to save money is to just get your equipment and bundle for most of these companies because the price for internet by itself is so dang high with a ton of gotchas. Also contracts are a good thing since they are typically the cheaper of the two options and contracts tend at least with Comcast/Armstrong don't stop you from upgrading or downgrading down the road. They just won't let you cancel for that period of time.

HandyDad, this was an excellent video. You have reinforced my decision that getting rid of cable is the right call. I got a great deal on 100/100 Fios for only $29.99/month for a year. We are paying $40/month to Cox for basic channels. Can you help me select a great starter or mid-range antenna for our TV? All I want are the local news channels, that is it. I checked AntennasDirect and most of the channels are 20 miles away. I absolutely can't wait to ditch cable. We also have a Fire Stick with streaming services so we are all ready to go without cable. Thanks!

I guess Optimum is nice if you live in the NY tri-state area. Unfortunately that is the extent of their service area so I am basically locked into Fios or Comcast as my ISP. I am most likely going to make the switch to Internet only service and use Streaming services for the majority of my entertainment. My big issue is that getting anything done right now is next to impossible because of the COVID-19 issues. hopefully this ends soon so I can get rid of my large triple-play bills. Thanks for the video.

A 4k stream from Netflix/Amazon uses about 15-20Mbps and most 1080P streams are around 5Mbps. I've tried DIrecTV Now and that thing is a data hog, around 8Mbps, but it has the best picture of all live tv services.

@handydadtv4 жыл бұрын
I’ve since moved and my new neighborhood only has Optimum so no more choice for me. But that’s okay because I’m still happy with that Core TV package with 300 MB Internet (which is PLENTY even with 3 people working from home). I just REALLY recommend buying your own equipment. I have my own cable modem, mesh WiFi router, and TiVo boxes. My monthly bill is under $100. It will go up after 2 years to around $130.

Great video! What do you think on companies like comcast or Uverse that only let you use 1TB a month and if you go over they charge about $10 for every 50GB after 1TB. If now we use more streaming services then more internet (MB) consumption.

So, this was a very good video. But since the core of your "solution" is the Optimum package. It's only really a "solution" where Optimum is offered which is Just CT, NY and NJ.
@handydadtv5 жыл бұрын
My intent was to show the process to make the best decision for you. If I didn’t have Optimum in my area, I would have some other cable provider. If I didn’t get a good enough double play deal, I would have just gotten Internet and chosen another streaming service. Point is, now is the best time to evaluate what you watch and rethink how you get it.
@petersuarez6515 жыл бұрын
Wow...I pay $202.00 a month with 100/100mbps 3 boxes, HBO and phone with Fios here in NJ. This is the second contract that I've had with them, and it ends next month. I've already purchased 2 Antennas, 3 Firesticks and will keep on the 100/100mbps internet.They already told me that my internet would be approx $80.00 a month, add $25 for Sling so I can get the cable channels that I like and another $15.00 for HBO, then taxes...I figure...my bill will be $140-$150. So I'll end up saving about $50.00. Hopefully when all is said and done, my savings will be a bit more.

I don't have time to listen to your entire video, but FiOS Fibre internet is simply the best next to Google's Fiber. No cable / ISP company gives a crap about either your Cable TV or Telco they make next to no money, but instead they make money on renting you equipment and their ISP sides of the business. We moved our telephone lines to Google Voice and use an OBi 202. We've been Streaming Netflix since they offered it day one, prior to that we were using their DVD service. Our preference is KZbin TV, Philo, HULU Plus no commercials, Netflix 4K, Amazon Prime, and we have other services. No the Cable TV decline parallels the decline of the Middle-class income. Same mirrored decline as the Suburban malls. Some people earn a hideous amount of money. Even then streaming and in particular no commercial streaming and Cloud DVR are vastly superior to older conventional cable TV. You just want a damn good and reliable internet.

@@handydadtv .. LMAO but Jaquith's right .. also then why "TIME STAMP" your video?
I have Fios TV solely because my parents watch the live Chinese channels. They are not technically-savvy and probably will not be able to learn streaming given their elderly age. Otherwise, I would've cut my cable a very long time ago. However, most or all streaming services do not offer international channels. And if they do offer international channels, they wouldn't have the channels that I personally need.

FiOS didn’t suck. The biggest savings came from the equipment. I’ll go back eventually, if Optimum (Altice) raises its rates. Typical bogus apples to oranges comparisons. Your Fios deal is based on being an old customer while your Optimum is as a new customer. Also it's opti is not just $65., with add-ons it's about $75, and you only get a hand full of channels compared to Fios. And after the 'new customer' rate you will be right back to over $150. I have Optimum in April, '19 and am in the process of dumping them in 30 days.

I had shared Optimum account from 2005-2010 through my mom's second husband, he was an ass hole, so I destroyed his computer with adult content half my teenager life. 🤣. Internet was slow and when you had TV service issues took technicians to fix it if it even did anything. The iOS remote for TV last button to go to the last channel always broke, trash quality remote. I don't imagine Optimum is any less trash as Optimum internet is slow and it is shared network, so neighborhood goes offline, you do as well. I bought Fios Gigabit, best package and it is amazing! I had Spectrum and you need to pay for garbage slow internet that goes down daily and they have audacity to charge you for rental and Wi-Fi when both should be free. Bill was $150 for TV , after TV was taken off, bill went from promotion from $50-$70 they are thiefs. Have fun having a technican half ass fix your internet then you called me again and the technicians said the internet is fine. They tried to charge for an appointment by technicians due to their incompetence by phone. They never charged me since I cancelled on time after they arrived. I made the mistake of ordering Spectrum internet due to not knowing people to talk to and they charged me a little over $130 dollars. I own them now 12 dollars, but they are not getting anything due to crappy service and crappy technicians. Customer phone support is awful too. TV went constantly down for the people that had Spectrum. Thankfuly TV never realy went down on me since I barely watched TV just used internet streaming. I like that Fios is rental free for router and Wi-Fi is free. All you pay is internet bill.
