I live in Oakland. A few years ago, I called to report a possible break-in of my neighbor's house. Dispatcher asked if anyone was hurt, I said I wouldn't know. Then she said an officer would come by and check it out. No one ever showed up. It's a total waste of time calling 911.

I called after a really bad car accident and the dispatcher stated that why I’m calling without knowing the address or street names. My car accident was in the freeway and hit several times, which caused me a confusion and didn’t know except where I was. I just recalled the freeway and the last exit. Also in Another incident. Road rage. The guy came out and pulled my mom out of the car and started to hit her. I called 911 and no one answered. I called my brother and father, which responded faster. I called again after 30 min, and nothing. We stopped a cop car and stated he could not respond because it didn’t came from a dispatcher and need to call 911. BS..

This happened to me in North County, San Diego in 2016. It was a Saturday morning. I was extremely sick and had chest pain with difficulty breathing. I waited on hold for a little over 10 minutes for someone to answer when I called 911 for an ambulance. Between that disaster and the pretense of healthcare in the US, I left the country several years later without looking back:(

As a paramedic in my area a call was in queue for 7 minutes which means it's ready to be dispatched but hasn't yet. We assigned ourselves at the 6 minute mark and they freaked out. Then we asked why it took them 7 minutes to dispatch us as we were already at the address for a cardiac arrest. Giant investigation people lost their jobs.

Same here in Portland, Oregon. I called to report a fire and I was on hold for 7 minutes. One time my friend called the non emergency line and he was on hold for 3 hours. In the end, the phone ran out of battery and he had to wait in line again after getting a charger 🤦🏻‍♀️

I was followed into an underground garage in Oakland by a creepy man, I called 911, sat on hold for 5 minutes, and was told no crime had been committed yet and to call back if something happened, basically. The man was standing behind my car staring at me as I was on the phone with them. I stepped on the gas as if to run him over, he jumped out of the way, and I sped off. As a young woman living alone in Oakland, I felt I was on my own.This is why I moved out of Oakland after many years...police are often not available in an emergency. (I am not blaming the police, this is a city government/ Pamela Price problem.)

Even here in san jose ,the 911 calls are getting ridiculous. A couple of months back , I witnessed someone in a pickup truck try to run over a PG&E worker in the middle of the street multiple times. The man was barely able to escape by running through cars that were stopped at a light. I called 911 to report it, and after being on hold for almost HALF AN HOUR, I gave up.

It was like 3-4am, the cops didn't come fast enough and the guy driving was dumb as hell and watched his boys dip immediately when I ran out. There's a difference between fast busy and slow busy signals. Fast busy signals are a problem on the trunk line, while slow busy means there's an issue at your call destination. As for self-defense, California actually has a pretty good set of laws. It's hard to legally buy a gun, it's very expensive to legally carry a gun, but once you get there the self-defense laws are generally good and favor the defender. California is a stand your ground state, it has castle doctrine, and it's arguably got the loosest laws in the country for actually pursuing your assailant after he runs away.

This is happening all over the US and even worse, there's a problem with dispatchers not getting info out too. Last year, I made 5 different calls during an incident that went on for over an hour (plus multiple calls by other neighbors. During this incident, several people were assaulted by a drunk person who would not leave. It took nearly an hour and a half to finally get any response. It's not just the 911 phone systems, it's the entire system, including dispatchers.

This is getting bad in a lot of cities. Where I live that 58 seconds sounds like a dream. Here when you call 9-1-1 you’re calling at least 5-6 times before your call connects. And then when it does you get to hear a recording saying that 9-1-1 is for emergencies only and that if it isn’t an emergency to call the non emergency number. Then it repeats in Spanish. You hear this recording over and over until someone picks up. The last time I had to call them it was a life or death situation and a child in my apartment complex was involved. The child had gotten a hold of her moms prescription pain killers and OD’d. thankfully I had some narcan and we don’t live very far from a hospital. Our manager said “to hell with this shit” and we took her in her truck. I can’t blame the operators and dispatchers most of the time. There’s a major shortage of them pretty much everywhere. But this is getting ridiculous. People are dying because of it.

Jesus dude, I’ve called 911 for various reasons in (I think) Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Florida, and both Carolinas and the LONGEST I’ve had to wait was probably 6 or 10 seconds. I don’t even know because it’s almost immediately. I didn’t even know that this was an issue in this Country because we’re better than this. Isn’t it ironic that the a city that taxes you to death, in a State that taxes you to death, can’t keep basic public services running? In *VERY* rural areas yes. But for for the vast majority of the state, expected response time is ~5-10min. The real problem is that EMS is by far the most underpaid and abused public service we have in the state, while also being the most needed and valuable. Why the hell would anyone want to sign on for McDonalds wages to risk your life for a job that will slowly chip away at your soul, while the state drafts laws that more or less say "Fuck you" to people in the field? (see: legislation drafted and passed several years ago making it so you have no lunch breaks) Its just a ticking time bomb waiting to pop, and it's going to be ugly when it reaches critical mass.

the problem is two-fold One, dispatch is a stressful job with a lot of responsibility, long shifts, and they are underpaid for what they do. I once called LAPD directly. They put me on hold, while a crazy person, who kicked my door in, then subsequently was even chasing after my car in a large store parking lot. All while I was on hold with the LAPD. It was literally like in a cartoon. Crazy person running after me, catches up, I can escape, catches up again, escape and so on. Crazy person had a lot of stamina. I finally hung up on the LAPD and exited the parking lot and left without having the chance to report the incident, let alone officers showing up and arresting the crazy person. It was horrific beginning with 2018..i can only imagine how bad it is today. I used to work armed secutity where the zombies used to gang rush the retail establishment i worked at and steal without impunity. The 28 second answering time is an average and I can remember frequently being on hold for 10 minutes THEN! And worse still the police response time was hours later. I had people in citizens arrest handcuffed and seated in the front of the store all that time. Just sad. Now loss prevention is a different story since technically they're not really security since their sole responsibility is to prevent theft. Now security's sole responsibility is to safe guard assets and the patrons of their assigned location. Security can place someone under citizens arrest if they have witnessed a crime whether its a felony or misdemeanor on their assigned location.

If the police officer decides to release the person arrested by the security guard, the arrest is considered a detention. The arrest in question involved an individual who assaulted: 1. A patron 2. You are right. In 2018, Oakland’s average answering time was worse. At 45.92 seconds. Then dropped on 2018 to 28 seconds (which is still double CA’s mandated standard), then jumped back up in 2022 and 2023 to nearly a minute. Also, people are reaching out to me saying they’re on hold for 10-15 minutes. I’ve brought this to Oakland city officials. Waiting for their answers. They’re still refusing any interviews with me about this, though.

I'm not even a gun owner but I'm pretty sure that things are going to become more chaotic and more people will have NO CHOICE but to conceal and carry, even if its ILLEGAL....

I didn’t grow up with gun culture - and still generally remain pro-gun control - but I bought my first pistol in early 2021 at the age of 35. I was assaulted by an off duty cop who just lied it all away. You have to have lots of disposable income to play in the courts. I was threatened by a deranged contractor for posting a negative review, my garage was broken into, my car was broken into, someone tried to jump my backyard fence, a crazy person screamed at me as I pulled into my garage. My doorbell cam captured two men rattling my front gate at 3 AM. Calling 911 basically initiates a series of events that, in the best case, means someone arrives minutes later. Basically anything short of homicide results in a report being taken. A minority of cases are cleared, and even those convicted get slaps on the wrist. So having experienced all that since the pandemic, my views on guns have certainly evolved. I understand the harm they cause nationwide but when my and my family’s life are on the line, I’m not relying on a phone call when these things unfold in a matter of seconds.

@@acslater017 As a southern non-fascist, I grew up respecting guns from a military veteran father (also a non-fascist southerner whose grandfather was a real to life dixie-crat, which is kind of incredible to hear given how my father is) and enjoy hitting the ranges and trying out different types of weapons. He has several sidearms specifically for home use. I'm very much pro gun control and red-flag laws. I don't own a firearm as my wife is vehemently opposed to it. I would consider two firearms in the house (specifically an XDS .40 and a Pardini GT40 for those trips to the range) and the only hesitation I would have for a home intrusion would be, "I *REALLY* don't want to clean all this shit up inside the house afterwards..." What really sucks is that you're basically forced to shoot to kill since someone could sue you if they live and thus create a legal headache for you when they were completely in the wrong. I'm not one to dirt nap someone knocking on my door asking for someone at a wrong address, but I guess the video doorbell helps with that. But, for the situations you describe and it escalating into a home invasion scenario, it's best to let them win the prize for playing the game they chose to participate in.

I work at a call center and I can certainly see this is an issue with the 911 operating facility. The culture in there must have led to this being the case. We are extremely micromanaged at my job its crazy to think that 911 dispatchers don’t get micromanaged to the point where 10 minute long calls would not be acceptable. Higher ups are letting this happen.

Emergency Communications Centers are nothing like a customer service call center. Well beyond you're tied to a headset. This problem is a national issue and it starts at the highest level of governments. In NE Florida they decided to get rid of pensions, which has led to people not wanting to go into law enforcement. If a call taker is on the phone with someone either during an active call waiting on patrol units, or giving medical instructions they are stuck until responding units get there. If there aren't enough officers, medics, or fire fighters that wait can be a while. Which is why folks can be put on hold for a undetermined amount of time if they aren't having a real emergency. If it isn't actively life threatening, it's not an emergency. To fix the issue it's going to take a lot of money. Something politicians won't sign for. Remember it cost nothing to say I'm sorry we should be doing better. To fix the problem is millions of dollars per year. The computer software they are talking about going to is going to cost millions, that's before programming and implementing it. Then add the salaries, which are probably too low to attract the right people, then the year of training it takes to get a Dispatcher fully competent and working alone. It's the same for field units. Until everyone is ready to pay more, they'll have to deal with it. Legally at the end of the day, the police have no legal obligation to save normal citizens with very few exceptions.

911 isn't a call center. It's a dispatch operated by trained professionals, most states impose both degree and classroom training requirements. 911 has to deal with people of all kinds. People in the middle of freaking out / having a mental breakdown, people calmly reporting a incidet, people barely speaking english correctly but they know 911 is the number to call for emergencies and of course idiots misusing 911. An operator has to work through _all of it_ or they can be held criminally liable for anything that results if it's a real emergency and they hang up.

As a local PD dispatcher, we're supposed to answer before the third ring and give it out immediatly. Ofc we only have one person on at a time most days (understaffed and underfunded). Sometimes people have to wait on hold depending on what they're reporting (dog being loose vs robbery ect). However this video is extrememly concerning.
