I was a Pizza Hut delivery driver for nearly 2 1/2 years. I saw young people coming in asking for work who were immediately turned away by the manager because they were inappropriately dressed, not well groomed, and/or careless about their speech and demeanor. No matter whether you’re looking for a delivery job or a CEO position, you need to dress and speak respectfully and walk in with your shoulders back, your head up, and your feet not shuffling the floor when you walk. Also, location is key for getting plenty of deliveries and good tips. I got triple the number of deliveries and amazing tips in a small town where restaurant choices were limited as compared to a big city where Pizza Hut was just one in MANY choices and other restaurants had healthier and tastier menus. I now do Favor running, which is a local alternative to Door Dash, and make about as much as I did at Pizza Hut, but with a lot less stress and more freedom of time. But if you do a delivery services such as Door Dash, you have to be well disciplined and on top of your game.

Dave, Doordash isn’t hiring new drivers in most cities. I live in a city of almost 2 million and have good history of dashing from a few years ago and they won’t even let me back on the road because there are so many drivers already dashing and accepting every order no matter how underpaid it is. The food delivery industry has changed since covid. People don’t have extra money to be ordering food for delivery and Doordash changed their operating structure.

Then he should drive to an underserved area, outside of the big city, and continue to get gig work that way. It wouldn't be any different from someone who has to commute 1 hour a day into the city for work. He would be doing the opposite, commuting out of the city for work. Of course you would need to do some research.
@ayo_k326 ай бұрын
@@rebeltheharem7028 Those areas outside of cities hardly offer any money through gig work, especially Doordash. If it’s slow in a major city, it’s going to be extremely slow in a place where hardly anyone is ordering food. Also, some food delivery orders only pay $3-$5, which wouldn’t even cover gas. Commuting outside the city for that would be a horrible idea - he’d be better off working at minimum wage in his own city. At least the money would be guaranteed hourly. When I was doordashing at the height of covid it was very busy and I was still barely making minimum wage- after taxes and gas it was less than min wage. If it’s slow, that time would literally be a net loss.

The thing with DoorDash and Uber, its almost like you are depreciating your car in the future for cash today.....so it's almost a net gain of zero. This is essentially true if you don't have a garage, tools and mechanical skills to do maintenance yourself. You will pay a shop a fortune in just breaks and oil jobs, not to mention the overall depreciation of the milage to the car. I think a poor person would be better off to get any traditional job where their car stays parked outside and their not running it into the ground. I see these Uber drivers on KZbin saying their making 25/hr, but they are only counting their time driving, not sitting and waiting around for their next ride. Also, they seldom factor in gas, taxes, maintenance, and the overall wear and tear to their car. Cars are expensive enough without letting a corporation use it as their own asset. Idk, it just seems like another trap that poor people fall into.

He’s in Chicago, The Big City! There are plenty of places in the city and suburbs to work. It might be a ‘starter job ‘ like Pizza Hut, or WalMart, or Home Depot unloading and stocking, what about work for Amazon, or deliver for UPS? Or even at the Airport loading and unloading planes. There are thousands and thousands of jobs available there. Go find one!

Also, there are good city colleges (about 4 of them) in Chicago. Those are good places to look at for career development. There’s also trade schools in Chicago. And a huge Post Office system to apply for a job at!

I'm this situation you get a job until you get the job. As someone who has hired people over the years, I would always, given equal qualifications, hire the laid off person who delivered pizzas for 3 months over the one that just looked for the next job for 3 months
@roadrunner96226 ай бұрын
That's great, but in some fields (esp. with large corporations), "taking time off with family" looks a lot better than "worked at Burger King."

@@roadrunner9622 I have worked for many very large companies through my career, and I can assure you that someone who gets a job of any kind during their downtime between jobs, if it is more than a month or so, is looked on as a responsible person willing to work hard. Those that go months or more looking for the perfect job are often referred to as a "cousin Eddie" because they have been unemployed so long holding out for the proverbial management position.

My wife and I made the money for our down payment for our house doing 6 months of door dashing after our regular job. Nothing wrong with it. We are both professionals in Nursing and Accounting respectively. You can't be too proud to do what you have to do to reach your goals.

As a person who occasionally interviews people... yes. I can tell. And early in my career i would hire these people on purpose because i thought i was doing a good thing. Every single time its bit me in the but. Every single time. So yes. When i sense desperation and fear in an interview... right or wrong. The pain of all those bad choices comes back. Regardless of what my hiring recommendation actually ends up being. If you come off desperate you are fighting uphill against all of my past demons.

Go to a temp agency. I dont know why this is so hard for people. You are young and healthy and can do any job, you'll get something in days. You live at home, with only the 2 bills. If your parents are OK with it stay there for 2 more years while working at a factory. Then you'll be 21 with a paid off car, no debt, job experience, and be in a better financial situation than 95% of people your age.

I wonder what this kid's childhood and teen years looked like. It sounds like he has not faced much adversity in his young life. By 19, my grandfather was serving in WWII. And then my Dad and eventually I served in the military. Maybe this kid should binge watch some St. Jude commercials on kids who are dealing with cancer. I could go on and on. This kid needs to get a job, any job and work thru this small mess. And this will be the adversity he needs to grow up and make him stronger.

The real key to getting a job fast is location! When i lived in wealthy areas, getting a job is easy because there's always a need for someone at the bottom sweeping floors. From there you make friends and meet people. Your real purpose is being attractive to employers. The starting job might not care if your shirt is wrinkled but that potential employer with a 30$per hr job would rather not sit through 20 job interviews when you are standing right there! Poor areas, it's hard to get traction. Everyone already has 5 friends or family members whose called dibs. I recommend signing up with a trade company that will pay for your school do that for a year or two then you can find other jobs at your leisure.
