A lot of the world woke up today learning that Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball, passed away on March 1, 2024. How are we supposed to feel when someone we don't know passes away? When we share this connection from many years of memories... I don't know what I am supposed to do.

Akira Toriyama's creations mean the world to me. Without him we probably wouldn't have Naruto and One Piece, two shows I love. As we get older and we start to lose creative people who without knowing us shaped us and brought joy into our lives we can only try our best in our daily lives to remember them and try to bring some joy to the world even with simple acts of kindness. My fondness memory of one of his creations was in Dragonball Z when Goku went Super Saiyan for the first time. I remember watching it on Cartoon Network and waiting for what felt like an eternity for this saga to finally reach this point and just jumping off the couch in excitement.

The world lost a great artist who obviously touched a lot of lives. Thank you for sharing yourself in this video. I am a late comer to his work, and in part I built a connection to his work because of your reviews and your passion for the material. But I now randomly have Goku figures around my home because of the work he did and because of your passion for his work. And that seems pretty cool to me

Feelings are hard, but going back and playing some Dragon Quest or watching some of the early Dragonball episodes always brings me great joy. He created a legend that will go on through new generations just as authors like Mark Twain and even William Shakespeare has. He changed how people look at manga and continues to inspire new authors and artists. I don't need an eternal dragon's wish to know that man made an impact on all of us. This is just the next part of his adventure which will never end.

Condolences. I feel you, I shared his loss with a few of my family members and wife but they don’t fully understand the influence and memories Akira gave me. Thank you for sharing and keep doing your passions. Great message. To share I watched the DBZ films growing up on VHS before it was introduced to the states. I watched it almost everyday and Hyped to hear the Head Cha-La intro and memorized it without understanding the lyrics.

Agreed. I have nothing but massive love for Toriyama in my life. I think of him as a Sensei in my life. Whether or not he knew he got me through some tough times. I being an Ojiibwe i put tobacco down for him. Talked to his spirit in the spirit world and even took out my hand drum and sang the traveling song and feasted him as if he was one of my own and thanked him for all that he has given me. The body of work i can always go back to to reference. I aloso sang him the Ainiishinawbwe bear song but people do not immediately know how close he is to my heart. I usually don't do this for a celebrity i liked and he wasn't one he was shy and reclusive so not many personally knew him. But did I love him no question about yes. He's had such a cultural impact on many of his that i could not feast him and play out the meories in my mind and heart as if he was someone i personally knew as his show is the favorite of mine all time. It really hit me hard. the tears flowed. the stages of grief kicked in i feel low right now. I ache inside. I mourn for his family. I accept that i am grieving a man i never met personally because none the less i was touched in my heart through all the years. Dragonball is a part of me. RIP Sensei Akira Toriyama 1955-2024

2023-2024 has been shocking news one after another, I just woke up this morning and it just hit me in the face with this devastating news, just like how it happened when Jason David Frank and Kevin Conroy passed away. I have my complete collection of the Dragon Ball manga, learned how to draw via re-drawing the DBZ characters as kid, watched GT as my first Dragon Ball anime, played Budokai 3 on my ps2, started collecting SHF when I got into college, DBZ has been around my whole life til now. Toriyama's works are one of the many things that really shaped our childhood and even influenced our life into becoming who we are today, and for that I'm thankful for all the incredible work he has done. RIP Akira Toriyama, thank you for making our world a more colorful place with your amazing vision filled with compelling story and characters.

I understand how you feel. My feelings towards Toriyama's passing are the same as when Chester Bennington passed. They created art that reached us when we were younger that helped shape us to who we are today. They created memories that we will never forget. Appreciate everything that was given and the memories we can continue to create with what we have.

Aside from that, my best memory of Dragon Ball was going to my childhood bestfriend's house and playing with our Jakk's Pacific and Japanese Bandai toys (the ones with the golden hair). We'd create our own episodes and even have crossovers with our Star Wars/Zelda figures. One year he went as Link and I as Goku for Halloween. Peak 90's fun. Still friends with the guy to this day. I'll just never forget sitting down after school and watching DBZ and Sailor Moon while doing homework. Who would have known that would have me hooked for life?

Thanks for expressing how you feel man you verbalized my feelings as well in this video. Dragon ball helped us build a friendship in a way too. I can say I'm simultaneously feeling a loss of a creator's life and when the creator goes in many ways so does the purity of the creation. Dragon ball will always be here so his memory will live on in that which is wonderful yet at the same time, if I'm being honest I'm simultaneously mourning the loss of any new creative projects from him. Very weird feeling indeed

I was maybe 13 at the time. I woke up super early one Saturday morning (like 5am) and turned on the TV not really thinking that Saturday morning cartoons didn't really start until 7-8am. Anyways, I flip to one of the local networks and all of a sudden I'm hit with "STAND BY FOR DRAGONBALL Z! COMING UP NEXT!" and then the US DBZ theme song came on. It was an episode of the Namek Saga. That was it. I was hooked. I spent hours on the internet looking up anything related to Dragonball. I downloaded 15 second clips of episodes we wouldn't see for years, I joined forums, I dragged my friends into checking it out when it finally came to Toonami, and they got hooked. To say Dragonball had an impact on me is an understatement. I would have never played Chrono Trigger if I hadn't learned that he did the artwork for it. I don't think anyone or anything has shaped and influenced me like Dragonball did. He will be missed.

I was able to share my love of Dragonball/Z/Super with my daughter. Last year we finished all of DB and Z (me for the umpteen millionth time) and we are still finishing Super (one more disc left) But seeing her reaction of pure joy and having her love the series and tell me her favorite (Gohan) really makes me smile. I’m like you.. I grew up with DBZ on Cartoon Network. I remember getting home from school and being pumped to watch it. It is because Toriyama and this world he created that I found a love of drawing and painting these characters.. or designing my own DBZ characters or me as a DBZ character.. And I reconnected to it with the Figuarts figures… and later DS Super. The first movie my daughter and I went to see on daddy daughter day last year was DB Super: Super Hero.. so yeah.. DB is a huge part of my life. I lost my father 5 years ago due to issues with his time in the coal mines and black lung. Clearly, nothing compares to that.. but.. losing these guys like Toriyama is like seeing your childhood finally be put to rest… and proof that we are all getting older. Thank you Toriyama-San.. for everything. For inspiring me to draw.. and to be able to pass down what you created and experiencing it again with my own children. May you rest in peace.

My first exposure to Toriyama was with Chrono Trigger on the SNES. Nearly thirty (!!!) years later, it's still one of the all-time best games ever and I replay it frequently. On the Dragon Ball Z side, I have such fond memories of coming home from college during the summer and watching through the VHS releases with my youngest brother. The VHS releases came out so slowly, I don't think we ever watched the last six episodes together, but I think we still had an amazing time bonding over that series.

Akira Toriyama really influenced my life in similar ways. I started drawing because of watching DBZ, DBZ was the first manga I ever bought, I would rent fansubs of unreleased Dragon Ball stuff from our local anime store because of how much I loved his work. It's crazy, but I probably wouldn't be as into anime and manga if it wasn't for Dragon Ball and I can honestly say I only picked up Dragon Quest because of his involvement (though it did become one of my favorite game series of all time). It's also really sad to me because I felt like he was just starting to get his groove back and really start creating again, it seemed like Daima was a project he was really involved and excited about because it was something different, yet he's now gone and can't see the reaction to it. It's a tough feeling because of course I don't know him as a person, but I know how much his work means to me and others.

Akira Toriyama doesn't even realize how many lives he has saved (yes, going to that extreme) as well as inspired through his works. For me, it is definitely Dragon Ball. I mean I like Dr. Slump, but DB is the one that got my fire ignited. (Not GT) It will always be part of my life and I will cherish it. It got me through tough times back when I was still at school and even now at times it still does. My previous friend Arif and I used to talk about DB and DBZ and we could go on and on and disregard homework and stuff LOL~ It was part of our life. His passing has affected me more than expected, and even now I can't believe he is gone. But like Goku, we have to continue training to become stronger in our lives, especially in today's world. That would be what Toriyama-san would want to see us doing.

I am a big dragon ball z fan and I’ve know the series since I was around 8 years old. The first time I I was introduced to the series was because my mom bought a vhs of it. Specifically an episode of goku going SSJ3 in front of Goten en Trunks. I was blown away and became fan ever since. I’m also good at drawing just like you and I have drawn Goku, Gohan and all the other Z warriors every day for many years. When I read that he passed away, I was shocked. I thought about it the whole day. I own so much Dragon Ball figures and merchandise. I have done so many dragon ball related things in my life and I owe it all to Akira Toriyama. I also am confused about my own feelings. We don’t know him personally… but I think we know more about him than we think we do, because of his work. His personality shines through all the stories and characters he made. Rest in peace Toriyama san. Your memory will live on forever. Our community will make sure of that.

If I could say one thing to him it would be THANK YOU for creating such an awesome and fun thing, thank you for opening the west up to the idea of Japanese Anime, thank you for giving me something to bond with other kids over, something that inspired me to draw and to collect and to dream. Thanks to the internet I was able to see all of it again and again as an adult I saw Dragon ball after watching Z and Gt and loved it so much, I played dragon ball z games on my ps2 especially the budokai tenkaichi 3 for hours and not getting bored at all and I can still play it for hours. I cant imagine my life without dragon ball Goku is my hero I love that he is pure of heart and helps everyone around him ready and excited for any challenge, Vegeta the relatable character. I read some manga and Toriyama's notes and interviews behind those books. I am really sad that we lost him. He made our childhood so special

Man... You know, I've recently reconnected with the artistic side of myself. I drew a ton as as a kid. But then I bought into the lie that's it's a good hobby, but I won't make a living doing it. I gave up drawing around 13-14 years old and started back up at 31 years old. The only drawings I have from my childhood are DBZ fan art. I've been drawing more DBZ fan art for fun recently. I realized that, among others, I owe a lot of my passion for art and drawing to this man. Similar to what you said, when a celebrity passes - it's sad, but doesn't affect me personally. This one hit different in a bad way. What a blessing that he produced his art and created so much for all of us to enjoy.

There was a time when I refused to watch dragon ball, because I thought all it was was drawn out fights that went in for too long, but when I sat down and started from the original dragon ball, I was filled with nothing but joy watching the show, the original made my laugh like no other show could, the story building was entertaining through out the entire show. Dragon ball will forever be great, it may bot have made an impact for me as a kid like most fans, but I understand why goku was such a fan favorite for the kids, HE'S GOKU! There's still lots I haven't seen of super, but I can't wait to see what else he's added to the story of Super and Diama. Rest in peace, Akira Toriyama 🥹😁

I think this thing kinda hits a little different because someone’s art (which I believe is an extension of a person) was that much a part of our lives that we can’t help but feel moved. i grew up watching DBZ and Naruto and to think that his influence was just everywhere, it can’t help but be somewhat…nostalgic.

Thanks for your video and sharing your thoughts. For me personally, Akira Toriyama was almost like a god. It was Toriyama-sensei's work that inspired me to pick up a pencil and start drawing in the first place. My life would be way different if I never saw Dragon Ball. First it was doodling and then I started making webcomics online. He showed me how fun it was to draw and make comics. It was my childish dream to use my art as a way to get famous so I could meet him someday, to thank him. There was a strange comfort in just knowing that my artist idol was still walking the same planet as me. Even as I got older into my 20s I still clung to that foolish dream of getting good enough with my art to take me places so I could meet my hero. When I heard the news I was devastated. I didn't know the man personally, but I did love him. I know that sounds strange but I guess that's just the one sided nature of creating something so valuable to someone else. I'll continue to hold onto the inspiration he gave me. I'm now in my 30s but I still draw almost every day. I'm going to get back into drawing comics and try to at least touch one person's life the way he touched mine. If I can accomplish that much I think I can die happy. RIP to the GOAT. Akira Toriyama's legacy will live FOREVER!

Yeah, it’s always tough when a celebrity dies, especially one that isn’t in the spotlight. Heard about the news today and honestly, I don’t feel much of anything really. Which sucks, because it makes me feel like I’m heartless or something. But like you said, none of us knew him personally and if we have an attachment it’s more towards his creations than the person himself. And his creations will live on forever so it hard to see this as a loss, really. When movie stars die it similar but different because there is more of that person that reaches you through their performance and somehow it affects you more, or at least to me than seems to be the case. And once a movie star dies, they won’t be on screen ever again, so that feels more like a loss. Anyway, growing up in Belgium in the 80’s and 90’s I watched Dragonball all the time on the French channel (Belgium is barely a country and the best stuff on tv always came from the surrounding countries, mostly the Netherlands and France so I watched in different languages since I was 8 or so) and Dragonball was by far my favourite show, together with Saint Seiya. I lost my interest after the Android Saga because I loved the humour and craziness of early Dragonball butdidn’t care as much for the constant fighting in Z. I still by far prefer Dragonball over Z. Still, it had a big impact. It was one of the first shows where I drew the characters from and it fed my love for drawing. If I ever manage to do art as a living, Toriyama’s work will surely be one of the major influences for me. So in that way, I am indebted to him. But I’m rambling. Regardless of how big or small the personal impact of his death is on me or other people, the fact is we lost a great artist this day and that is always a sad thing.

Most people were influenced by Dragon Ball to go to the gym, to get a better life, to start again after hitting rock bottom and so on... Even if I don't know what to say or think, i still feel bad, because I know someone who did such great things passed away and I'm not gonna see or hear about him anymore. Dragon Ball was the first thing to hold my fandom to the same level as Ninja Turtles. I remember the day my dad took me to learn how to drive a car. It was the same day as the episode where Goku and Piccolo were learning to drive a car. You know I've joked a ton about how much I think DBZ is bad but that doesn't make it less impactful as a solidification of what it represented. For me it's his contributions to Dragon Quest amongst other projects that you just knew was a Toriyama design. If someone can look at a piece of art and say "that's so and so's drawing" then in my opinion they're a staple of the craft and he was/is.

I'm very grateful for all the wonderful stories and characters he gave us. I'm thankful that Dragon Ball was the series that brought anime into the mainstream in the west, so that his stories became a gift to the world, as did many others' works, thanks to him. @@NostalgiaUnboxed Thanks. He had a very unique voice, and while I'm confident Toyotarou will do well, and bring his own take to the stories, I will miss Toriyama's unique sense of humor. There's so much to unpack from Dragon Ball. The humor, the brave heroes, the tales of redemption for so many of the characters who started out as Goku's enemies but became his friends. The generally optimistic tone for the series in that no matter how bad things got, the heroes always pulled through and lived happily ever after. Part of me also suspects he had something big planned for Frieza, based on the growth we saw in the last few times he appeared. He seems a bit more . . . pragmatic. I don't think he was going to make a complete face turn, but I think he was evolving more into a frenemy of the Saiyans, as opposed to being just a recurring villain. Maybe sometimes they fight, but sometimes they have to work together for some shared goal. I'm hoping that if he did have something planned, he let Toyotarou know what it was.

Before Dragon Ball Z hit the states, my brother and I would go to our public library to use the Internet and read the written summaries of each episodes as it airs in Japan. I remember specifically reading the Buu arc already, and we haven't even seen the Freeza saga yet. Spoilers weren't a big deal at the time because we were just so interested in the cool characters and who they were fighting against. We would also pay ($0.10 cent/page) to print out color images of Dragon Ball Z and put them in a binder to bring it back home. We still have the binder!

The mark he made on the world is indelible. No one can fathom a world without Dragon Ball, but we all know the biggest manga and anime today would be vastly different. Very few creators get to leave a legacy that has inspired so much that they are intertwined with so many facets of popular culture that whole swaths of media today would not exist without their influence. It's an understatement to call him one of the most influential creators of this century. To try to answer that question in your description, we should feel exactly how we do when we get the news. Shocked, sorrowful, hurt, angry, etc. Knowing someone personally or not shouldn't matter, it just changes the degree to which we may feel those emotions. I can't give a complete answer to that without it sounding like a dissertation (it took about twenty minutes just to write this), but I do know that the fact that millions are mourning his passing is a powerful statement. If that person had a positive impact on the world and/or your life, they ought to be mourned like a friend.

So, I felt odd, like not sad, but as if there was a sort of emptiness. It was weird because I think the latest picture of him was more than 10 years old. You never see video footage, you never hear his voice, he had his own character to represent him and the most you had was written interviews. It was hard to feel what I ended up needing to feel. Talking about it, making a goodbye drawing of my own, listening to others, I did get sad, and I shed a few tears, and something occurred to me - I’ve had a story in my head a long time that I’d been slowly building and drawing out for years, taking big breaks in between, and Akira Toriyama was a big influence, and I realise I will now never get the opportunity to finish it and send it to him. And I think now more than ever I feel like I regret having wasted my time in not completing it sooner as I should have.
