When we bought our house in 2003. Our goal was to buy a house we could pay with my unemployment. Then if I got laid off (construction) we could still make the payment and my wife's income could still pay the bills. We did this despite the lender trying to get us to double our mortgage. When I did get laid off in 2005 we never touched savings.

That makes so much sense to base it on potential unemployment income (worst case scenario) amount! I don't think even Dave has suggested that :)

This caller needs to (1) fire his accountant, and (2) set up a Solo 401(k) _immediately_ and contribute the max (not the tax-deferred max of $22,500, but the overall max of $66,000) right now, while he doesn't have to make sacrifices to maximize his contribution. Even if his sales career fizzles out in the next year, the impact of just this year's contribution could be massive in 30 to 40 years.

As usual, it is the taxes will hit most 1099 self-employed hard when they do not understand that the IRS will demand close to 40% or taxable income and some states will require another 10%. Car loans rarely make any sense unless they are under 1%.

I really hope you're filing quarterly tax returns with payment for FICA and advance payment for IRS !!!! Don't wait until April to verify how much you will owe! This guy sounds really vague and unsure about how much this and how much that. Don't listen to George and John interrupting you and saying don't touch the tax savings account, ignore it, it doesn't exist! You'll be in big trouble if you wait until end of year. When I ran my small sole proprietorship I knew each week EXACTLY what my $income and tax liability$ was. John is right that you need a better accountant and find someone to do your bookkeeping for you (usually offered by a decent size accounting firm.

@user-mv9tt4st9k
@user-mv9tt4st9k 10 ай бұрын
1099/self employed should be paying quarterly estimated taxes. If the business does not make money (e.g., costs more to run than it brings in or breaks even) then income can be filed with taxes at the end of the year. However, filing income at the end of the year requires excellent recordkeeping, a saved stash of money, and itemized income forms with receipts. In short, he needs a better financial person. Preferrably someone who is willing to listen to his long-term goals and steer him in a direction of not spending money to "improve his tax base."

If your tax due for the year is more than $1000 then you do have to pay estimated tax quarterly. Income tax and FICA self-employment tax which is 15.3%. That's why in my original post I told him not to be misled by John and George's casual command to forget about the tax fund until the end of the year. That would be stupid
@indianatime
@indianatime 10 ай бұрын
I think the quarterly requirement is based on the previous year, so if he didn't have 1099 income in 2022, there *might* be a technical reason the caller wouldnt have penalties/interest for underwithholding on this new, high 1099 income in 2023. But, especially with the car suggestion, major flags on this accountant.

@jaysleeper264
@jaysleeper264 10 ай бұрын
You're exactly right. If it's something you were going to buy regardless or something you need for your business, then yes, buy it at a 30%discount as a write-off. Or an appreciating asset. But ppl and their accountants are much happier to spend $100 to save $30. Which, of course is a loss of $70 cash, but now they have a nice car.
