I DON'T LIKE WHAT PRINCESS HAS DONE ON THE NEW SUN PRINCESS
I'll admit it. I'm pretty excited about taking a cruise on the all new Sun Princess. However while I love some of the new features on the ship. I hate this one change they made to one of the most important areas of the ship.

I agree that for cruise ships a traditional stage is better. The best show I have ever seen live was on a circular stage (Beatles Love at Mirage Las Vegas), but that theater was built around the show that they knew would run for years on end. Cruises change frequently enough that it's a bad idea.

YEP Cirque Beatles was designed for round stage… most broadway shows & live bands are not. They don’t “fit” on a round stage. BTW Beatles does have a bad view from the sides: The performers typically face front or back of the theater. Good for those customers, but the side seats get ignored. Soooo even for a show designed for a round stage, there are bad seats with bad angles.

If you have not experienced a "theater in the round" you could not possibly know just how cool it really is! The actors learn how to move around on the stage so you never feel like you are just looking at the play from the back. The round theater allows for more people to sit up front. In Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin we have the Fireside theater. The plays put on there are amazing.

No, Don, that’s not just you! I certainly don’t think it’s a good design, years ago in SoCal there was a live theater in the round. Personally, I would think this design makes life more difficult for the performers..a lot of stuff goes on behind the stage. Not my preference. I have a hard enough time watching what's all going on in front of me let alone the 360 degree watch. Hopefully the designers can make it work for everyone. Thanks again for update Don.

In Phoenix we have a theater called Celebrity Theater that has a 30ft round stage with an audience in all directions. It was built in 1962 and the stage has the ability to rotate 360 degrees. The theater opened with South Pacific and by all accounts the show received rave reviews. The theater is famous for having been the filming location of George Carlin's 1978 concert film. Louis C. K. Filmed his 2013 HBO specal there. The theater has hosted the likes of Van Halen, Aerosmith, and the Brian Setzer Orchestra. The theater still exists today and is one of the most popular venues in the city of Phoenix. They have no trouble with the 360-degree audience.

Round stages work but only for the events designed for them. For other events the good venues simply don't put people into the bad seats. Hopefully that is the plan here. However, the inclusion of screen means that they are probably banking on some of the seats being bad for looking at the stage but you can see whats happening on the background screen.

Don... I agree w/ you regarding a circular stage. I wondered if the performer(s) would need to walk down the aisle, in front of the seated audience and climb the stairs to get onto the stage ???!!! At the end of the performance, the cruise-director would need to do the same as the performer walks down the stairs and somehow "exits" the venue. Perhaps there'll be a trap-door on the floor of the circular platform ??? Perhaps the stage-platform will rotate ???

You're overall concerns about Princess designs and layouts of their newer class of ships are the same concerns that many have. The problem with Princess these days is their design in general ever since they came up with the royal class princess vessel. There simply is not enough venues in different areas to enjoy. Princesses has become extremely greedy and it's all about putting as much people on board at the same time as possible. And this majorly reflects in their design of their new ships from the royal princess class forward.. oddly enough even though the cruise ships are made larger with the new princess design. The interior show lounges and dining rooms and entertainment venues are actually smaller. However there are many more cabins then that of your average Princess ship. And although the other areas have shrunken in size they still try to squeeze the same amount of people into smaller areas that would have normally sat comfortably with larger areas. When princess had the Caribbean princess design with the large Skywalker's Lounge on the back tail of the ship with larger main dining dining room and larger entertainment lounges. Those ships had a very comfortable feel to them that were very easy to navigate the layout. However these new designs from the royal princess class of ships and now their new design going forward from the royal class are really extremely lacking in design. In addition to that the service on board ships have also decreased instead of increased as would be expected by the overall size of the ship. However princess has chosen to staff their ships with less crew members and yet have more passengers. It's all about maximizing the profit per square footage. That these new Chinese designs have enthralled with in the architecture and overall layout of their new class vessels. Leaving people with a very negative impression of princess. Especially when they have previously been on better design princess ships expecting that kind of gracious layout they are met with a more cut back less space available design for entertainment lounges and dining venues. Making everything onboard their new design cruise ships smaller including their corridors their cabins their lounges basically all of their interior spaces even the public restrooms. Simply put princess is not what they used to be. It's like comparing a large graciously equipped Big Comfy Cadillac. To a small compact car. They're just not the same. Meaning the design of the new princess ships has all been made very compact with their interior designs instead of having big open areas like that of the past. The areas are much more compact but yet Force same amount of people into those small areas that normally would be sitting comfortably in a larger better design. Which seems to be Princesses new philosophy all the way around. Pay more get less.

Me too, I used to have season tickets to a theater that was in the round! However, not all plays or performances are suitable to that format. They had a traditional stage for other plays. Not all plays were Greek but those certainly work! In fact weren’t they all in the round? Entrances from all four corners certainly added to being engaged. We had one performance that involved a musical production from a blind troupe. The pianist sat with is back to one of the corners and the performers moved to various points so that you never felt you were watching from back stage.

Looking more closely at the artist's rendition of the Princess Area, even though the round stage can be reconfigured or removed and a more traditional stage can be installed after removing a couple of sections of seats, there are a lot of remaining seats on the sides right next to the stage area that will have very challenging views. It also looks like there is significantly less overall seating compared to the traditional Princess Theater seating. With increased passengers onboard this will make it difficult to get seats. Although with the move to the Class-based concept, the swanky suites, mini-suites, and cabana suites will probably be given the first choice of the best seats.

Just a thought, maybe the stage itself will rotate around 360°.

Hi Don, we love your show and always look forward to hearing your thoughts on different situations. If you have a minute please give us your thoughts….we were considering taking a Holland America cruise because we like itinerary! We were told Holland is more for older people specially on long cruise… we are looking at a 34day cruise ., You have been on both…. How would you compare Holland to Celebrity… which we normally cruise.Thank you

Possibly the stage will slowly move.

Don. how are the dining areas and the casino. I don't like crowded ships. Don't know about the round stage. Doesn't sound good to me. How are the dining rooms going to be? How about the casino? Are they going to have performers at the lounges? I like the traditional theater too.

I am guessing they will only have shows designed for that circular stage. I guess will will find out next year when the ship launches. I am not worried, any hickup can be worked out. The people who work in the entertainment arm of Princess know what they are doing.

Where I live in Washington, D.C., the Arena Stage has been a theater-in-the-round for 40 years or so. Shows are staged for the theater so that everyone sees the show and no one misses out. I expect Princess will do the same for this new stage.

They'll probably have non traditional, possibly interactive entertainment in there. I don't even go into the showroom when I'm cruising. After a while the shows all blend together. I think there might be something along the lines of acrobats, Cirque de Soliel. Things that are different from the norm. It certainly lends itself to being a late night dance venue. YES!

I cannot imagine doing acrobatics on a moving ship. They go to do a jump, the ship hits a wave, and the acrobat misses the rope he was trying to catch.

@@electrictroy2010 I went on a cruise where it was a little rough and the acrobatic performers were fantastic, had real audience participation, worrying for them and hearty applause to let them know we certainly approved of them stopping the show after they did a move we weren't sure they should have. I don't know how, but we had some real communication going on.

@@electrictroy2010 I'm sure whatever type performance is done ship movement will be taken into account. Acrobatics is just an example. There was a really entertaining show we saw on Ovation of the Seas in the 270 Showroom that was happening all around us. There really wasn't a single focal point for the audience. Lots of fun. I can see them doing something like that in the "Sphere". I'm more excited that it will be a multi-use venue, again like 270 on the Ovation. They had dancing in there!

I just hope the Princess' "Theater in the Round" venue can be permanently reconfigured to the more traditional "eyes front" style. Princess is going to have to do it fairly soon after launching. When I first learned about the 360 degree theater, I had the same misgivings as Don.

Just watched a vid from princess with their director of Entertainment. She explained the whole stage setup and it’s very interesting on what they have done from storing the extra seats that will be removed for straight on viewing to how the stage it’s split and also rising and lowing. We will check it all out on February 8th when we sail on her. Will you be on this cruise?

Saw an illusionist last night on Regal. Would they have a projection of it if I was facing his back in the round? Are the forward facing seats going to be reserved for the rich people that can afford the higher price packages and suites?

Not just you‼We did the Rotterdam in November and just did the Edge. HATE HATE those stages! As of the end of this year we will have been on 80 cruises! And we’ve got to want them as we live in NC, 4 more left this year! We started in 1985 on Ncl sundward II . Man, have we seen some changes! But this is the pits! We miss the shows with people!
