This video is part of a sponsored series with Princess Cruises.
When given the opportunity to tour any part of the Discovery Princess in 2022, Adam chose the engine room, and a fascination with cruise-ship engineering was born. So it's not surprising Tested jumped at the chance to chronicle the building of Princess Cruises' newest ship -- the Sun Princess -- at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy. One of the defining features of this ship is its glass dome and sphere. But ... how can rigid spheres and domes remain watertight on a ship, which flexes while at sea? Well. Here's how.

I can only imagine how many homeless and hungry people in the world the amount of money spent on this could house and feed. And that comes from someone who loves Tested and Adam and is glad to see getting huge sponsors and also appreciates all the engineering and hard work that goes into making such a flat out awesome modern marvel. *We've had "Green washing" ... now we have "Adam Washing".* Cruise ships are unbelievably polluting, using the worst type of heavy fuel oils. Want to take a tour of the deck while under power ? You'll experience some of the worst air quality you ever will ... literally walking through the exhaust haze. And what's worse, the ship companies think nothing of running the engines while in port, polluting the city they are visiting ( hence a few European ports have banned the practice ). Your greenhouse gas footprint will be terribly high going on a cruise. And they spoil the port cities they visit. The Netherlands is starting to ban them. Disgorging thousands and thousands of tourists upon a city for an 8 hour stay. In time these ships will be banned. Do your bit and boycott them. *Adam .... forget the great tech blah blah. These things are not part of a global climate emergency solution.*

@@modestmousecoloredperson Granted, it sounds extreme. But it caught your attention - that was the point. Really, it all comes down to personal choice. Nobody has all the answers, but it's a full on clime emergency. it's here. That too can sound "kinda insane". But it's what the UN, WHO and scientists are telling us. Anyway, peace and love !

@@modestmousecoloredperson No, you don't understand the concept of bait and switch. And I don't appreciate being misrepresented as lying. The climate emergency is here. I presented a full bore defence of not supporting the polluting cruise industry. Yes, it can sound extreme. It is. Wake up. Yes, that is me suggesting you wake up. And don't backtrack : your initial comment was about eco-minded comments sounding extreme, not people-telling-people how to live being extreme. Nobody is telling anyone what to do in real terms. That only works in real terms if you have the power to make them. In colloquial terms - the terms we use every day, telling people to wake up, not backtrack and to be more concerned about the environment is just that : colloquialism. Do what you like. Adam can do what he likes. But at least you're doing it in knowledge that it's not the best for the environment. I don't have kids, so in one sense I shouldn't give a flying f??? as I won't be around to see the worst of what will happen. But we all have to pull together ( and no, that's not an instruction, it's another colloquialism. Try switching off the internet/ tv/ radio so that you don't think that every colloquial term is a direction to do something or else. You're not a slave after all. Peace and love.

" - "Europe's most polluted cruise ports: Venice, on the other hand, improved significantly. The most cruise polluted port in 2019 dropped to 41st last year following a ban on large cruise ships entering the port that was introduced in 2021, leading to an 80% fall in SOx emissions."

The back dome is the balls and the front dome is the head. Two engineers got drunk at a bar one night when they were supposed to be doing their design. The next day their boss says hey boys where's that design you were working on last night. One of them groggily reaches in to their coat pocket and pulls out this stained napkin sketch of a 13 year old's joke of a Weiner ship. Hands it to boss. Now this.

I appreciate the amazing engineering, even as I detest cruising. It sounds like the absolute worst way to go on a vacation to me personally. They are expensive, they herd you around like cattle to specific cruising Port locations which have grown to take advantage of the cruising customers with local populace/business just waiting to extract money from your pockets after you get off the ship for your few hours ashore. If you want to be literally spoon-fed a vacation, detest hiking camping and exploring, and enjoy sanitized tourist versions of countries that you visit... Cruising just might be right for you.

Fun Facts: A large cruise ship can have a carbon footprint greater than 12,000 cars, and passengers on an Antarctic cruise can produce as much CO2 emissions on a seven-day voyage as the average European in an entire year. The most commonly used fuel type for cruise ships is heavy fuel oil, which is relatively cheap but highly pollutive. An average-sized cruise ship carrying 2,000 passengers uses 150 tonnes a day when it's at sea; in port, it requires an average of 50 tonnes to meet the liner's electricity demands. Ships like the Harmony of the Seas burn up to 4,900 litres of fuel per hour, 249,000 litres of fuel per day. Cruise ships generate vast quantities of solid and liquid waste, often dumped into oceans and seas, affecting marine flora and fauna. Environmental groups state that the passenger's carbon footprint triples when one opts for a cruise journey as these 'floating cities' produce around 15 gallons of hazardous chemical waste every single day.

There's quite a few great examples of such things, google floating city architecture, there's a lot of designs and renders showcasing them. @theaveragepro1749

problem is that theres alot of maintenance in keeping something like this operational, and a floating community is unlikely to be able to produce that much profit, the only thing they can really do is tourism or office space, but both of them will end up having a fairly long travel time from shore (where everything else is), so it ends up being just a niche hotel for tourism, and inconvenient office space

@XMarkxyz

Not really for many reasons: that skyscraper in London was parabolic so the reflective surfaces of the glass concentrated the sunlight on one arguably large but still one point, while the dome even if they were perfeclty reflecting or working as a lens (thing that i doubt) being spheric scatter the light on a larger area, that's what's called spherical aberration; but mainly, by the looks of it, that is aluminized glass so only part of the light gets in and being flat panels there is no lensing and it ges pretty much stright through
