This is how relationships end. The love dies for one party who is brave enough to state the obvious, and the other clings to the relationship, trying to argue it isn't over, when in reality they also know it's dead. Love no longer exists, but it doesn't prevent the scars from forming and the pain etching itself onto the souls of those who wanted it to work. One of the reasons why "Mad Men" worked so well is that it was full of flawed human beings - real people who suffered for their mistakes and their faults of character.

Don Draper himself is the transition from the 50s to the 60s. Don is what America was. A nation led by men, for men...with beautiful women waiting at home to serve their husbands and be the submissive sex doll, and raise the children. Dons “downfall” is a metaphor for the downfall of the “great American dream” that once was. That what I loved most about this show. Don Draper was America. The journey of Mad Men is a metaphorical portrayal of how America truly became something different than it ever thought it would be. Mostly I think it showed that the ones who think they have the most power, are actually the ones who have the least power.

+peppermint23 Betty was a manipulative calculating person. Don fucked other women, but he loved and provided for her. She never gave him that wifely feminine attention, she was always either demanding shit from him or just childish. I'm not justifying his infidelities, but this is an exteremely painful moment for Don, as he has loved VERY few people and has never truly felt wanted or understood (Betty never did), and one of the few people he did love just told him that she felt nothing for him, with a cold indifference. His world begins to shatter as he sits down on that chair, and Dick Whitman begins to feel the all too familiar pain of being alone and rejected.

+Carlos Alegría "she felt nothing for him". No, she's just telling him she doesn't love him anymore and can you blame her. She obviously cared about Don from beginning to end. Don had it coming. Throughout most of their marriage, Don was cheating on Betty with multiple women at a time. Before she found out Don cheated, Betty couldn't even understand why people cheat on each other! With that being said, I can empathize to some degree with Don. Even though he's a broken man, he did have real feelings for each of the women he's with. He did care for all of them. He also loved his children, in a lot of ways, he acted more like a parent than Betty does.
@drepop80310 жыл бұрын
i agree with most of what you said except betty not understanding cheating. she wanted to cheat before she knew don was. the more he worked and she felt neglected, the more she thought about other men. she almost let the air vent guy come to her room. she even masturbated thinking about him one time. only difference was don was more comfortable in himself with sleeping with other partners where as betty was hesitant and only did when she found out don did. so two wrongs do make a right? also don is a permiscuous person and betty plays like she's not. so it was kind of messed up she got him back by cheating. i do understand her leaving him though. that was alot different than cheating. francis is another don though. betty likes the bad boys lol.
@mischabrown633610 жыл бұрын
THere is a difference between wanting and having. Everyone has desires, but not everyone has the willpower to overcome it. Betty did with the salesman and Don almost never could resist another attractive woman's interest. I think Betty has more moral standing than Don does. Besides, I don't think Francis is anything like Don. Unlike Don, he pays attention to Betty and her needs. I think the two of them make a good couple actually.
@pluckybellhop666 жыл бұрын
drepop803 Actually you're wrong, Don DID deserve to be cheated on and Betty didn't. Betty didn't "get him back by cheating". How many times did guys hit on her and call her beautiful but she didn't flirt back let alone cheat. The whole point is that she could have cheated at any time and CHOSE NOT TO. She wasn't promiscuous she was in need of loyalty and respect (as we all are, it's an important part of marriage) and Don showed her neither. Their marriage had ended long before she left him for someone else and it ended by Don's own doing. Yes, it took being loved by someone else for Betty to really know what it felt like to be loved, but that actually makes Don's case worse. She was there all along, loving Don, he could have repaired his marriage at any point but he chose to be abusive and cheat on her. Don DID deserve it and leaving him DID make it right.

Alot of people condemn the fans who see Don as this one dimensional Alpha Male Badass Personna thinking that the right way to view him is as a P.O.S who no one should be like who lives a sad lonely existence, but if that's how you see it then you're one dimensional too (even if you view him as a "complicated character" or "flawed" or whatever) the full description of his character, which reflects the whole series, which in turn reflects life in general, is the tension between those two perspectives, you may think "well he just has to be a good open honest person and all will be alright." but his charm comes for being who he is, the emotionally unavailable womanizer, it's what makes him the irresistible, part of what makes him able to get with the women in his life, who are sought after by many suiters but choose him, is the fact that he's always out of reach (an epiphenomenon of which is the cheating) yes it's the cause of constant tension in all of his relationships but it's also what attracts the women to him in the first place, it's a sad paradox that can't be resolved.

Remember the time depicted here. For all of time till then, historicly expected modes of conduct for men in certain positions as displays of potential, colide with cultural changes all at once and no model to follow combined with job pressure unmatched till then. Husbands socially stable lives came to one sudden massive explosion, the ripples of which we have yet to see settle as men spin in this social blender. Maybe we men of today deserve a little slack since your grandpas did way worse.

What I find really galling about Betty’s behavior here is that…. It’s not the cheating, or the lying/gaslighting, or being emotionally unavailable. None of those things caused her to fall out of love with Don or leave him. What’s the thing that does it? Don actually telling her the truth and finding out that he comes from a dirt-poor background and basically doesn’t have a family. THAT is really why she does this, and is the one real new wrinkle to Don’s behavior.

People saying Don is worse than Betty. Lets see some facts. Yes, Don is a horrible person for constantly cheating on his faithful wife. But so does she when she later cheats on Henry out of the blue. Just because she did it once does not mean she is better than Don. She is just as horrible in that regard. This point is to be taken with a pinch of salt but Don sleeps with people whom he atleast knows, converses with and whom he even tries to help. eg - sussane, midge. Betty sleeps with a random stranger in a bar. Food for thought?. Now lets come to other walks of life. Don is a self made man who came out of extreme poverty. And that is not just based on good looks alone. He is smart, calculated, knows when to speak and what to speak. The man made his own fortune. Yes, he did something illegal. But a person whose mother was a 22-year old dead prostitute and who grew up under an abusive houshold in a whorehouse, he did whatever it took to survive and became a millionaire. He is good to his kids. Empathetic. Never belittles people. He fired his clleagues for making fun of someone's vulnerability. eg - when they were making fun of freddie peeing his pants, when he finds out sal in homosexual. Betty on the other hand is petty. She has a mind of a child. She instills fear in her children. Frequently loses temper over trivial things. Slaps sally. Threatens to cut off her fingers. Refuses to move houses after she asks Don to leave. Cheats on Henry and sleeps with Don. A man whom she kicked out since he was unfaithful and the list goes on.

Don is a great ad man because he can get people to believe they must have the product long enough for them to buy it. Don gets all kinds of women because he can get them to believe they must have him long enough to have a one night stand, an affair, or even a marriage. Trouble is, what Don sells is an image, not a reality. That works for selling products, but women discover they fell for the image and not the reality, and then it's over. That's what's really happening - Betty realizes the Don Draper she thought she married does not exist - and never did. It is frequently shown that Betty cares far more about appearances than reality. Yet there is a point beyond which reality matters to her, and we see it here. In the end, when she decides not to fight the cancer, it's partly about appearances (leaving a good-looking corpse) but also about her acceptance of reality (her chances of surviving the disease are slim to none.)

All the Don haters (Basically all women) favorite scene. The bastard finally gets it right in the heart. I, was so RELIEVED fo Don. I couldnt lut my finger on it until Don himself, explained it ti Joan 2 seasons later on her getting a divorce. He said something like, a divorce is not a sad thing. Its a reason to celebrate, because something bad has ended, and you can start new. THATS what I felt watching this scene. Don has no idea the favor Betty is actually doing for him. After this scene, Betty's scenes on the show were cut to basically nothing. THANK GOD.

As much as I dislike how Don handles SO. MANY. FUCKING. THINGS. I still want him to succeed. I still want him to be the best ad man in the world. I want him to make those big sells. I want him to make things right with his kids and his girlfriends/wives. I want him to stop making bad decisions and to grow up. Because he can be a fucking great dude if he stops acting the way he does. If he stops and thinks for a second about the decisions he makes. As successful as Don is, he still has so much untapped potential. Not to just be more successful, but to be a better person in general. And I'm glad we saw a little inkling of that at the end of the show. But I wish we got a bigger redemption arc tbh.

Truth is betty and don got married because “That’s what people do” as Sterling said once. They “fell in love” but it was more lust and desire than anything. Betty was a beautiful young model ready to be married and Don was big executive with smooth talk, there was no real connection between them. Don wanted to be accepted for who he is but he never trusted Betty with his real self since he saw her as immature and childish. She didn’t understand him. Betty wanted a men to lover her and provide the package-children, house, car and money. She got one but not the other. All this lead to the affairs don had with other women. He kept doing it because he thought betty wouldn’t dare to leave him, since he gave her all she wanted (in his mind). They were basically a terrible couple destined for failure

I like how the director also shows Betty's evil side, a woman who, as soon as she finds out another wealthy man would take her, comes home to break up with Don. She knew how Don was for a long time, but she didn't leave him until, like a true female gold digger, found a better financial opportunity. Unfortunately, not too many people from the comments seem to see Betty's dark side, most of them being either gold digger females themselves or some brainwashed men

Betty is doing a service to two people here. Herself, for going to a kind, and more loving man, in Henry. And Don, for relieving him of his duty, as the picture of American Success husband. A facade, which he loathes. Don can now go to his self-laothing outright. It's where his true self lies. It's better to be miserable, and real about it, than pretend to be happy. At least Don now had a chance to really start over. Well, with Don it would take many, many do-overs. Fitzgerald said, there are no second acts in American life. Don Draper is evidence to the contrary.

I think his extra marital activities were wrong, however, almost expected from his associates as a measure of his overall job potency or selling appeal specific to his type of employment. Required in an unspoken sense but basicly empty and detached with a fleeting physical pleasure quickly replaced by a sort of dred and sadness. All the while, working toward making a financially secure life to deserve the one woman on this pedestal which in his mind he hopes to be worthy of one day. complicated.
@adamrobinette68322 жыл бұрын
Betty was treated by many fans as a terrible person. She did eventually turn mean. But she was a loyal good wife to Don and Don was horrible to her. He drove her to that if you start from the beginning. She knew he was a piece of shit and tried really hard to make it work anyway, while he abandoned her emotionally and physically most of the time. I always said you could tell if a woman screams 'I love toxic relationships, and wouldn't know what to do with a good man if I had one.' if they somehow did the mental gymnastics to sympathize with Don over Betty. He's like the handsome psychologically, and emotionally abusive dream toxic man they always wanted.
