It pretty much says “it was your chance to prove yourself, and instead of taking it like a man you took the easy way out and hurt others along the way to protect yourself.” It’s like when someone cheats on a video game like Dark souls, they say they beat it but use cheats or some easy build and just completely miss the point of what it’s about.

What is so fascinating about Buddy Revell is that is he isn't really a bully. And he's extremely intelligent. He simply lives by a moral code that he just wants to be left alone, and will make an example to ensure that happens. Doesn't matter whether you're big or little. He literally doesn't bother anyone the entire movie. The whole movie is Jerry bothering him, getting himself into the fight, and bothering him trying to get out of the fight. In this scene, he's disgusted with Jerry for not having the same conviction for his own shit. And at the end of the movie, he comes back, gives Jerry his money back, and even cracks a little smile that the little guy stood up for himself. I'd say he's one of the most misunderstood villains you're likely to find in movies.
@cgh73376 жыл бұрын
Agree 100%. When Jerry first meets Buddy & asks about doing the school newspaper article on him, Buddy sounds exasperated when he says "What do you want man, I just got to this school" (or something like that). You can tell he just wants to be left alone.

Baloney. Moral code, my foot. He's a creep and a bully who terrorizes a kid half his size. For what? Jerry may have been an accidental pest but he meant and did no harm. This is the moment i realized that buddy isnt a bully, or even a human. Hes an angel in disguise, sent by god to teach Jerry about the importance of standing up for himself, so that when the time comes, and J. Connor calls on him to a position of leadership within the rebel army, he'll be prepared. It all started with Buddy's unorthodox motivational tactics.
@Davethebeaver24 жыл бұрын
oh, come on. clearly, buddy represents a force of nature, one you can't bargain or reasoned with, only face head-on. the message of the movie is one of fortitude, of perseverance. the message that, in our current culture that idolizes weakness and reveres victimhood, is sorely missed.

Richard Tyson's acting is very good in this movie. He did a lot of things very subtly, for example in this scene at 1:13 after Jerry says ''Swear to god, you're not gonna trash me?'' Tyson ever so subtly shakes his head no before calling him a pussy. Another good example, probably the best in the movie is after the fight at the very end of the movie when Tyson give's the money back to Jerry for just a BRIEF moment his face lighten's up ever so slightly showing you that Jerry earned his respect.

Buddy has a code, and even if he's a bit rigid, you can't help but respect it. He doesn't mess with people, he doesn't antagonize, he even respects limits (returns the money, etc). Another great example of how the best so-called villains almost always have validity to their points of view, just exaggerated.

An underrated classic for sure. It was this scene that kept me watching it over and over back in the day when it had come out. Yes, the book report scene is epic but this scene-for me at least- sums up what the movie is about. “No matter if failure is a sure thing and the odds may be greatly against you at least try.” Decades later when I see someone give up without even trying I have that look of disgust Buddy Revell has. That person is worse than a “quitter”. They didn’t even made an attempt to start. I learned that from this movie.

This movie is a true masterpiece. So much subtlety and nuance that I think people missed back then. Richard Tyson is one of the most brilliantly written and perfectly acted characters in my opinion. Some of the finest acting I saw from 80s stars. First, the walk. His slow, heavy steps are probably the most memorable sound from the whole movie. Everywhere he goes, you hear the deep "thud" of his boots hitting the ground. This scene in particular. It is such a cool effect that in this scene unlike the others, his footsteps get softer and less menacing, as Jerry finally feels a very short-lived moment of relief. 2- The dialogue here. Buddy lets him off the hook as even the most intense bully probably would, but he leaves him even more bruised with his words. The scene after this where Jerry goes to the roof to think on Buddy's words is amazing. Not a single word spoken, but you see everything just through facial cues and gestures. Then the greatest moment of the film: When the students are coming to Jerry's aid and buying notebook paper for $1 per sheet to help him pay back the student store and Buddy comes in. This is a moment where other less-nuanced movies fail. In those other movies, the Bully would suddenly be a wimp because of the outcome of the fight. In real life, Buddy Revell kicks the living shit out of Jerry 999 times out of 1000. And they both know it. But Jerry has earned Buddy's respect and even admiration. When he returns the money, he gives him perhaps a very slight, almost not noticeable smile which Jerry returns. Then he walks out silently, same boot sounds on the ground, intimidating as hell to everyone in the scene except for Jerry. Not a single line of dialogue in that final exchange, but some of the finest acting ever! Just such a well-written and acted piece. Love it!

Best High School Movie of All Time Hands down No Debate 2 Thumbs up
@lawrencebittke84784 жыл бұрын
I first saw THREE O’CLOCK HIGH on cable TV back in 1985. To be sure, Buddy Revelle was an imposing guy who could deck you if you struck him the wrong way; but he was no real bully. Bullies bother people who mind their own business, and Buddy kept to himself, not wanting friends and just minding his own business. This was a remarkable film, very unique and very memorable.

Brings back memories of high school. When all my middle-aged classmates scheduled fights after school.
@patriot1384 Жыл бұрын
I never scheduled a fight. If you ran your mouth or bullied someone in class I'd break your snot box right there in the classroom. Needless to say I went to 5 highschools. Hated bullies and hated the things they would say to girls or small weak guys just wanting to be left alone.

Dude was knocking people out like it was nothing in this movie. The other kid was a coward, but it actually made sense for him to try to get out of it.

This film is deeper than it at first appears. We all have people that enter our lives to teach us something, a lesson about life that we add to our arsenal of knowledge that helps shape us. Buddy entered Jerry's life that day to teach him self respect, courage and to never underestimate yourself. He may have went through hell that day but when all is said and done it was one of the most important days of his life and he'll be a better man because of it.

Buddy represents life \ reality. Certain outcomes and realities are unavoidable no matter what we pretend or hope for. The best we can hope for in life is that we will face these realities with courage when the time comes. This is a message that is sorely in need of telling to today’s people.

I remember seeing this movie, at least parts of it, when I was very young. Probably around 5 or 6 (it came out in 87 and it was on cable, so I saw it probably in 88, maybe 89). Anyway, I still had the worldview that you did as your parents told, or if you were bad, you'd have to pay the price. Seeing the bully do what he did, I couldn't understand how he could do these things, so I asked my mom "where's his mommy to stop him??" thinking this was like the be-all-end-all of solutions. She told me "he didn't have a mommy", so my little kid mind was kinda blown but it made sense. He was sort of a ronin lol ahh the innocence of a child.
