The problem with these calls is that nearly every time, the solution involves personal responsibility and hard work, and too many people are allergic to both of those things.

You are SO right. I work a second PT job at an Amazon warehouse and this is a common story I hear from a lot of people. For many of them it's their only thing, but they don't want to work more frequently or get a better job. They settle for 16 hours a week in total on a part-time job, instead of full time work.

Jade is absolutely right. This girl is NOT looking for a solution. Her husband is working a bum job, and shes attempting to justify it by saying "we're a military family" (theyre either in the Guard or Reserves, NOT active duty). She could get out of this, but she doesnt want to.

Their financial situation (income aside) isn’t nearly as bad as some of the callers on this show. The only non mortgage debt was an 11k car loan, and they had 5k in savings. It leads me to believe they are probably running pretty lean financially, but 36k a year just can’t cut it. If either or both of them were willing to get their income up somewhat, and they continued to keep expenses down, they would probably be ok

I can show you our budget. We don’t go out to eat almost ever and don’t spend frivolously…” they’ve not yet taken me up on seeing our budget. They’re avoidant to sacrificing financial peace for frivolity. It’s worth it to us to own a house than have that $1,500 going elsewhere. It goes over their head. We’re almost done paying off our debt! We look forward to restarting retirement investing and paying off our house early 🥰

I see it a lot with the lower income people that will claim single and 0 to have maximum amount witheld so they can get a big refund. I had a friend adjust their withholding by explaining how taxes work with standard deduction and how much tax they should be accounted for and basically gave them an extra 400 per month and still got a 3k refund with having a family of 3 kids.

@@NoWaySmokey8889Nah I think it’s a realistic mindset. I was raised by two parents who were poor and it was not good. My childhood memories are of poverty and never having enough, even not enough food. It was depressing and felt hopeless. In this day and age, $30k is almost nothing. And here in California if you make $30k you’ll probably be homeless because you can’t qualify for any apartment making that little. Even in a cheap state I don’t think you could say you’re living “well” on 30k. That’s just barely scraping by.

@@bebop504nope. If you have no debt and you make choices to live within those means, you can live fine. Will you own a home? No. You’ll rent. I live in a red state in the south. I know plenty of families making it on 35k. 30k is a bit low, but still, that is what we taxes for, to help those who don’t have all those opportunities. There is nothing wrong with signing up for WIC for the interim. It is not Welfare. Maybe getting help with formula will give them that extra money to start paying off bills. Now, that doesn't mean extra jobs are not in the plan, selling the car and downgrading for awhile. It sounds like the husband is in the reserves. Get on a strict budget, sell the car with the loan and get a cheap car for now so you can free up some money. And what about babysitting in your home for a kid or two to bring in a little money without leaving your babies at daycare? It also would give the 2 year old someone to play with. Or start a home baking business. There are lots of ideas you could do.This is all short term until the kids grow up and start preschool etc..
