“That lady is in the financial situation she deserves and wants.” True. Then again, maybe we all are, no matter how good, or desperate our situation. I couldn’t sleep knowing I had just spent $58,000 for a PICKUP TRUCK!!! I would have preferred to INVEST that $58,000 in appreciating assets (single family 3-2) and sheltered a good portion of my taxable income while generating a spare monthly net income $4,000. An extra $4,000 monthly is a lot to me because I track everything, and very closely monitor my expenses. If a person blows through an extra $4,000 month (like I used to do) like it’s wet tissue, then an extra $4,000/mo. Won’t help at all.

If you get a $70k truck for $56k, it was a good deal. Doesn’t mean it’s smart if you’re still paying for it with a loan. Obviously I don’t know if it actually was a good deal, just saying something can be a good deal but a bad decision at the same time.

I’m tired of people saying they couldn’t have rented cheaper. This caller said they couldn’t rent cheaper than $2,100 per month? I just did a Zillow search with the maximum set at $2k, and that yielded 3,424 results within the city limits of Houston. It might not be as grand as she wants, but you get what you get if you’re trying to save money. This is a classic example of a choosing beggar

This reminds me of one of the most valuable life lessons I ever learned. Accountability is not about blame, to take accountability is not to say shame on you or shame on me for this action or that action and I think that's why we all get defensive when conversations make us feel that way. But the truest definition of accountability is simply to take account for, simply take note of what happened, the facts only, what led to this place that we're in now. And when I realized that and realized that accountability gave me back power in my life to realize I could do something about it I actually had the ability to change it and make a different choice, my whole world changed and everything becomes different. You never have to be a victim again regardless of your circumstances if you're able to take accountability and make a different choice. Doesn't mean everything will be sunshine and rainbows and doesn't mean things won't happen to you in your world but it does Infuse and Empower you to realize you can make a difference in your own life more than you realize. . . . . . But it takes a lot of practice to realize how to take accountability and 100 % honest with yourself and others without beating yourself up. . . . Simply take account for what happened, and use that information to make your next choice

I appreciate that Rachel stepped back and asked what the buyer was calling to find out. Then she gave two pieces of advice: first, what Ramsey recommends and second, what they need to do if they continue their current course. Is the debt crazy? Given their income, probably. But we never learned all the reasons they did this. Was it nuts to get a bigger RV and then a bigger truck? Yes. Are they willing to sell them? Probably not. Should we judge them? Not our job. We each make stupid mistakes and hopefully learn from them, but they're the only ones who will pay the price. I've given advice that I later realized seemed like good advice but in a similar situation, I was inspired to do something different. It worked out well but was so scary because I knew others were probably judging me and what if I was wrong? On the RV and truck thing, there are people doing it successfully but not by 100% financing the lifestyle. I was thankful that Rachel gave the equation for how much debt is too much for wheeled, depreciating assets. That was very helpful and information I don't remember hearing or reading in the Ramsey course I took my kids through while homeschooling them or in the many videos I've watched from you. Mostly, I appreciated the life lesson you gave in taking a deep breath and learning what they hoped to learn from their call. I had a texting conversation that went way too long a few days ago and I finally ended abruptly but I've since been learning how I could have dealt with it better. The lesson to stop arguing and stop a minute and then asking, "What did you want from me?" would have been invaluable. I will remember this call for a long time for all things financial and otherwise, especially when tempted into arguing as Jade did. And yes, I totally understand how Jade got derailed into haranguing the caller!

One of the best moves by the automakers was the elevate the old "pick 'em up truck" into a luxury vehicle. It's a rolling status symbol that many will gladly go into debt for that might have a empty eight foot box in the back.

Muhr Truuuuuuck I live in a small town in the Midwest. We have a 2003 Honda CRV and 2006 Toyota Prius for commuting. It’s crazy the payments and gas expense coming from our neighbors. Some of them have multiple trucks! A buddy of mine lives in a huge house in the suburbs of the city near us and has a big ol truck. 🛻 I showed him a pic of our new house, a very small 1,100 sq ft with a wood burning stove and he was jealous 😭 I mean I don’t envy him. A house is security, not a status symbol.

Bought depreciating RV while they had credit card debt. Bought depreciating truck while they had RV debt and credit card debt. Worried about throwing money away on rent but not worried about throwing money away on interest and depreciation. They're renting space for the RV, so they don't move it often enough to need to own the huge vehicle required to move the RV. She's a real estate broker but not working, so they don't even need 2 vehicles let alone 2 trucks. We don't really understand her mindset until the end where she talks about having an extra $3K/month after the credit cards are paid off. She's a real estate broker and the industry is bound to debt and buying the maximum amount that you can afford the payments for. All she understands is cash flow and she's going to keep her cash flow as small as possible until she dies.
@Triquetra15
@Triquetra15 10 ай бұрын
Good point on her understanding cash flows. That is the only way to make sense of her decisions(to a point). I can get what she is saying about it being cheaper somehow(I don’t know what rent and RV expenses are in her area). However, I wonder if she takes into account the term of the loan, the depreciation, and the lot rent. Not to mention the truck is insane. She’s going to be tied to her loans and they almost certainly will go underwater. Then if they are able to purchase a house win the next few years the cost of her decisions will likely become more apparent when they sell these “assets” or continue the payments on them in addition to their mortgage.

Caller might not know this but you can hire people to tow your RV place to place for 200 to 300 dollars each time. They're professionals with fifth wheel equipments and all that stuff. If you're parked at a spot and only 1 person is working, you would be better off selling the 56k truck, have just 1 truck, and hire professional to tow the RV if you need to move. That cuts down your monthly payment to about $1200 a month. RV will still depreciate in price so keep that in mind.

There are so many people that think the solution to a money problem is to spend MORE money. This woman didn't want to pay rent that she thought was too high, but had no problem with an RV payment, truck payment, and space rent totaling MORE than the monthly rent she thought was too much. Crazy. If she had stayed renting, she would've paid off her credit cards and then had thousands per month of free cash to save up to buy a house. Now with these massive debts, she will have a harder time qualifying for a mortgage just due to her debt to income ratio. Makes no sense
