3:18 You can even get a little more storage from the folded seats if you bring up the seat cushions. There’s a little loop beneath the cushions that if you pull, brings the cushions vertical so the seat can fold down fully. Doesn’t really matter, but in the interest of “quirks and features” I thought I’d mention.

You can also fold the backseat bottoms forward to create even more space. The backs will then fold flat

I have a 2012 2.0 liter TDI. It's as excellent as you say. But, yeah, the panoramic moon/sun roof is a problem. The track warps. The seals leak. And, for extra fun, when the seal leaks, water ends up in your spare wheel well.

If you were a safe driver and followed the manufacturer's instructions you would know why VW leaves the DRL lit. It is a reminder that you did not set the emergency break as reccommended. When you set the emergency break and accidentally leave the lights on they will all go off. Very good video!

Absolutely love and appreciate this review as well as all the positive comments. Currently looking at these for my next vehicle. My kids are still small and i prefer the cargo space and mpg over 3rd row seat siv with no cargo space. Test drove a '12 and '13 a few days ago. Time of my life for such short drive. Plus i make long trips so the cargo and mpg has got me wrapped around this awesome wagon. Thank you so much. Definitely going after this now.

@SEBBARU
@SEBBARU 4 жыл бұрын
What's interesting is that mine does not have auto headlights, but the instrument cluster will dim when it detects a low light level. It saves me the embarrassment of being one of those idiots who drives with their daytime running lights on at night. Also, if you shut the car off with your high beams on, the next time you turn your lights on the low beams will be on, which saves people from being one of the idiots who drives with their high beams (brights) on. Simple idiot-proofing. This is what separates German manufacturers from others.

Right Great video, thanks. I owned a 91 Passat wagon in the late 90s and really enjoyed the experience, but my latest purchase of a 2009 Wagon for $650 Canadian has proven to be a super buy. and the handling as well as the features has me blown away! I’m a back-yard mechanic/body man and will have this car working and looking tip top shape soon time! My only disappoint is not having the moon roof or the TDI :( The 2.5L still beats the crap out of my retired Saturn ION and feel the difference between quality & crud! Oh! The 6-speed dual automatic is the best working transmission I’ve ever driven; so smooth on shifting & only 260k kms. Yay VW

I've got a 2011 that wasn't even modified until early last year. I'll hit the mileage warranty level long before the date. Be careful of that moonroof screen.....they are a weak point given how long they are. The retracting springs in mine went "sproing!" one day and suddenly the screen was hanging down on my head. Very expensive fix. But....I just ripped it out completely and tinted the moonroof dark. Problem solved. 40+ mpg, even after the "fix". Hard to beat.

Great video very detailed! I didn't know about the rear wipers having the 2 speed options. Not sure if you know or ever noticed but if you put the windshield wipers on the low settings, the speed of the wipers slow down when you come to a stop, then speed back up to "low speed" when you accelerate, nice feature as well. Its an awesome car. I have one myself, I absolutely love it. I've had one major issue other then regular wear and tear maintenance and that was the diesel particulate filter needed to be replaced at roughly 145,000km (90,100 miles). Volkswagen paid for the entire dpf and I even got a loaner car for free! bought my golf wagon at 110,000km (68,350 miles) it now has 170,000km (105633 miles) and the only issue I have had is the dpf needing to be replaced. fun and strong little car. However for whatever reason here in Canada, I have a 2014 Volkswagen golf wagon tdi and not a Jetta sportwagen. I'm curious as to why they changed the name for them over here. mines a comfort line with the 6 speed manual no moon roof, no touchscreen. it also doesn't have to 115v plug in the backseat.. happy to see it got atleast half way to a hundred on the Doug score lol

@@CarDietrich I find it fascinating what differences they have between US and Canadian markets. I also have a Subaru STi that came standard with a radio, heated seats and mirrors. Whereas the USA didn't get those but got HIDs instead. But both got the wider seats (for our wider North American butts) compared to the rest of the world.
@CarDietrich
@CarDietrich 4 жыл бұрын
I'm assuming your Canada-Spec STI had the 2.5 liter like the US Spec cars? That's another difference, they gave us the torque and the rest of the world got the revs of the EJ20. I had a 2017 STI for three years, got rid of it earlier this year. I loved that damn car.

@@CarDietrich The rest of the GD car was the same 2.5L Turbo, 300hp, 300lb-ft. DCCD was introduced in 2004. Interestingly, the only reason why I have the Subaru is because the MKIV Golf R32 was not allowed in Canada, not even for import from the US. They've since changed that law and now most cars sold in the USA can be imported into Canada. They homologated the crash test requirements.

15:55 The hesitation in moving away from a stop may be the “hill-hold” feature, which as I understand it is supposed to hold the car in place for a second or two after you take your foot off the brake pedal to make driving on hills easier. I bought a 2013 Passat TDI a couple of months ago, and find the hill-hold to be somewhere in between noticeable and intrusive. I believe it can be disabled via VCDS or OBDEleven. Nice video, BTW.

Dude, you did a fine job. I really enjoyed your video. I have a 2013 fully loaded KERMA massaged and also a 2015 sport wagon TDI. I like the MK7 but my favorite is the 2013 which is a beast. The 2015 is more refined and more comfy. You may want to know that the front brakes are straight out of the Golf GTI, bigger brakes than the gasoline powered cars. Also, the rear sway bar from the GTI fits perfect and really transforms the ride. KERMA TDI is an awesome upgrade. I disagree about the fun factor grade. It is actually a nice car to drive By the way, this car is far superior to any Sentra, Prius and other economy car out there. The quality of materials is better, the brakes and suspension light years ahead and the looks......let’s face it, for a wagon, this thing is very pretty.

I'm a little late to this video, but since we owned a blue 2009 Jetta Sportwagen with a manual, I have some comments. We did the buyback in 2017 with 140k miles and got an Alltrack. I liked the way Mr. Dietrich used Mr. DeMuro's presentation method. First, if you want to reset the information without waiting a couple hours, just push and hold down the Ok button. Second, the panoramic sunroof is pure garbage and the downfall of the vehicle. If you had known you would have gotten the hardtop. I am a 50 year VW driver and always got a sunroof since my 1983 GTI so when we special ordered the 2009 JSW we opted for the sunroof. Of course ours leaked like all these cars because VW botched the drain hoses. Instead of having the drain hose plug into the sunroof like for decades, VW used a slightly larger diameter short connecting hose that is attached to the main hose with two dabs of glue. You can expect separation of those hoses, while still connected, within 3-5 years depending on how hot the climate is where you live. This allows the water to drain out between the hoses at the sunroof connection to then drain down the A pillar onto the floorboard. This problem is quite easy to fix, and if you have one you better do this to both front connections. Remove the roof grab handle so you can lower the headliner and glue gun the connection between the two hoses. Maybe you have to detach the visor too, but I did this over a decade ago and I can't remember. But leaking was the least of our problems. Later the lame sunshade that doesn't protect from the Sun busted. No way were we paying over $1k to fix a worthless shade. So I ordered a shade specially made for VW Sportwagens off Amazon for maybe $40. It is silver on top, white on the bottom, attaches to the roof with suction cups, and the edges tuck in perfectly so there is no gaps. This was a fantastic upgrade to the car because it actually stopped the Sun from coming through. But more importantly the biggest flaw in the panoramic sunroof is the combination of being large, not having a traditional sliding inside cover, and it being inches from your ears allows lots of road noise to enter so it is never quiet and you have to turn up the stereo to cover it up. The cheap sunroof shade made the car a lot quieter, but not as much as a hardtop, at the expense of never opening the sunroof again. I wish the junk stock shade had broken earlier because we only got to use the aftermarket shade for a couple of years. I checked Amazon and that shade is no longer for sale, but I did keep ours before we did the buyback.

Right before I sold the JSW in this video in 2021, I had it washed one last time and realized the sunroof was leaking once again. It became Carvana's problem.

@CarDietrich
@CarDietrich 4 жыл бұрын
No that's not how it's done, VW sent all the fixed TDI models to auctions where they were primarily purchased by dealers and then the dealers re-sold them to the public. However at this point I don't think VW has any more of them to re-sell, it appears they have all been sold off at this point and unfortunately there are far fewer of them on the market now than there were a year ago when I made this video.

@@CarDietrich; great recreation of the DeMuro style video, a nearly perfect emulation :) as far as the "Doug Score", i'd rate it higher, I have the '12 Golf TDI Mk6, and out of all the cars I've owned, it's been the best, the closest match was my '07 MkV Rabbit MTX, other previous cars have all been low end econoboxes, compared against those low bars, the VW's were both high end cars by comparison... compared against an '88 Ford Escort, '92 Dodge Shadow, a couple Neons and a Saturn Ion, the VW's were "supercars" ;) its all in the frame of reference, i'm sure if I came from BMW/Audi/Jaguar, etc... i'd see the VW's as low end cars...

Back in 2014 I talked my buddy into buying a new Jetta Sportwagen TDI with a manual for his wife. They used it for traveling and racked up about 35k miles before the dieselgate scandal hit. Man was he pissed. But later it turned out VW was going to do the buyback. She had gotten into two accidents so the car wasn't perfect. When they did the buyback they traded it for a new 2017 Golf Sportwagen and got $5000 cash. After that he said the 2014 Jetta Sportwagen TDI was the best car purchase he ever made in over 40 years.

The warranty you get if you buy one of these cars that has been fixed in the USA is on the engine, the turbo, and the emissions systems, and it is for either ten years or 120,000 miles from the original in-service date on the vehicle OR four years or 48,000 miles from the date and mileage of the emissions modifications, whichever gives the buyer longer coverage.

Great review, I have one as well; but you did miss the second hidden compartment in the cargo area (the one at the top by the bottom of the back seats). There are also nice storage areas on the sides in the back. I also have to disagree with a few of your Doug Scores! This car is fun to drive, and deserves at least a 4. Of course my has H&R Sport Springs and Bilstein shocks, but the DSG mated to the TDI engine is a great combo for spirited driving. Its length is a bit of a factor, but given its low COG I find the handling (which you gave a '5') and acceleration (see below) to make this car much more of a sleeper than most people realize. I also disagree with you '1' for acceleration; I regularly leave more "powerful" cars in my dust thanks to all the torque this little 2.0L engine pumps out. Other than a tuned V8, there is not many vehicles on the road that this car can't hang with! In fact, those who have "deleted and tuned" their JSWs also experience more power and better fuel economy, but I wouldn't recommend that until after the extended warranty expires. Otherwise, the JSW is one of the best unknown and underrated cars around! I previously owned a 1996 Passat wagon with the VR6 which was a great vehicle as well. I am extremely happy to be back in a VW, after 12 years of driving a Toyota I missed the experience of German automotive engineering!

I'm looking into getting a 2013 2L tdi sportswagon, but people keep telling me that maintenance and repairs are really expensive, and that they're not super reliable cars, but no one has specifics.....any advice? It has about 124000 miles on it
@CarDietrich
@CarDietrich 3 жыл бұрын
Here's the deal: yes, maintenance and repairs can be really expensive. You want specifics? If the transmission goes out in my car, that's an $8,000 repair. That's why I bought a warranty for it when I bought the car. However, with 124,000 miles an extended warranty might not be available for the car you are looking at, or at least a reasonable one at a reasonable cost. In general, parts and service on a Volkswagen Jetta cost about the same as they would on an Audi or a BMW or a Mercedes-Benz. That's the bad news. The good news is that by 2013, this body style had been in production for a few years so most of the kinks (besides the emissions lol) were worked out. The other good news is that as a rule of thumb, the people who bought the diesels were pretty good about doing the regular maintenance on the cars, so it is possible that the car you are looking at is in good condition and has quite a bit of useful life left in it. Here's my advice: if you really want to buy this car, get a pre-purchase inspection done. I would advise you to get with the seller and have it taken to a Volkswagen dealer and pay a couple hundred bucks to have the car inspected and also find out how much, if any, of the extended TDI emissions warranty is left on this specific car. That warranty covers lots of stuff, including the engine, the turbo, the fuel pumps, and the injectors and all of those are expensive to fix if they fail. If there's nothing wrong with the car, and the price is fair, buy it. If the dealer uncovers some major issues with it, and the seller doesn't want to pay to have those issues fixed before you buy the car, walk away. You'll be out a couple hundred bucks but in the long run you could be saving yourself thousands of dollars.

Real talk: If you compare a 2013 Jetta TDI to a Corolla or a Civic, the Jetta drives much nicer, has better interior materials (especially the SportWagen because its still based on the Mk.V Body) and is way more sophisticated mechanically. HOWEVER, statistically the Honda or Toyota WILL be more reliable. If you want to see how people really feel, look at how they spend their money: I voted with my wallet and bought the Jetta and I paid extra for a warranty because in my opinion it is a better car overall, but it still has some flaws.
