If you enjoyed our first lake drain down video, here’s the exciting sequel!
As usual, there was plenty of work to do to restore our old estate lake but the biggest surprise was how much the carp have changed the lakebed in the last couple of years. I've seen features that I've never seen before and the features that I thought I knew and understood, well, some of them are there and some of them are not. In this video, I show you how the carp are always changing their environment and keeping us on our toes!

More of a fishery channel than a fishing channel.....and that's for the better. Always interesting to see how an owner / manager looks after their venue and their stock, for us to enjoy. The hard work often goes unseen and (more-so) unrewarded, and under-appreciated.

This is so much more than just another run of the mill fishing channel. Your passion is reflected in the professional standards you hold yourself to and the knowledge you impart. You give David Attenborough a run for his money ! GREAT STUFF 👍🏻 (In your last drain down, you found a wire trace with what looked like the brass part of a spinner on it, so i was wondering if you had any sizeable pike in the lake ?)

Thanks very much for the feedback, it means a lot. Unfortunately, the pike don't do very well here due to the catfish.

Thanks Matthew I fished as a kid in London Gunnersbury Park near Kew. It was built by Monks. You would probably call them wild carp, very long and common. There was a tale about a huge pike, dogs have gone missing. But so have children playing on ice

✅ Watch next: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHilf615eMZ_bac We dropped the level of the lake again this winter, as we do every other year, in order to sort through our fish, remove the smaller fish and carry out maintenance work. Each time we do this, there are new problems to fix and this time was no different! I also had a good look at the lake features and if you’ve ever wondered why you can be fishing a water, catch regularly from a couple of spots, and then for no apparent reason, the bites dry up and you run into a period of blanks, this video will show you exactly why that happens!

I always like to dig a deep hole or ditch structure as a cold water sink, this helps with water circulation, water quality and fish growth. About 10 to 15 feet deep, 30 to 50 feet square. Yeh it fills up with silt every few years but it makes a huge improvement. If your water table level is higher than the lowest point, you don't need to cley line it. Also some soil types will naturally seel it's self under the weight of the water like black pete, loam or silt anything that can be compressed.

Fantastic insight as always Colin, I love this type of fishery management content you do. It’s incredible to see the comparison footage of the lake year after year & how the silt is moving around. I wonder if you kept taking the silt from an area of easy access year after year if you’d eventually end up practically silt free all over or is there a limit to how much the silt can move around do you think?

If I'm honest it was too easy, there is trust. I placed that carp back, I didn't take her/him out of the canal. My friends might say I lied, but I don't care

High Matt, great video, a great insight as to what goes on and what needs to be done to look after and maintain a good quality healthy lake, the cleaning, the treatments needed. I was thinking that after felling the trees 🌳 ? You might have seasoned and sold as fire wood, some revenue/ income for the future but, using for bunding/ bank building is a brilliant use. I guess over time could increase bank height and safety and maybe a slight increase in water depth ?? Very interesting viewing indeed so thank you. Any one fishing 🎣 your waters should consider themselves very lucky to have such a quality water to fish in. Cheers mate Les.

Mr Matthew. I was fishing this year with my young nephews. And id like to show them a rig they can use made from materials found in a sea salt water tackle shop as out ordered parts isn't sustainable for them. It needs to be safe, tangle resistant to be able to withstand an incompetent cast of a new fisherman, and made from materials easily available from any salt water tackle shop. Apparently the old and most hated "led clip" is allowed. As it can easily be found in salt water tackle shops. Perhaps a rig that if you were to swap the components for Nash and other named brands of tackle it would be a perfectly good rig The bottom of the water in my location is rather soft but not silty and a little weedy. The kinds of materials that are impossible to find and purchase at the shops in my area but you might be tempted to use are: tubing, putty, heli sleeves, auto ejecting running leds, bait screws, anti tangle sleeves, This thought of way of fishing is a problem that bugs me and reminds me of a simple time when i was new to the sport and trying to catch a fish with whatever piece of gear i could get my hands on. Until i started to think of that problem i have seen an egg sinker in years. Although a led attached with thin mono might seem an interesting solution, sustainability is the name of the game, it's not sustainable as a kid to be throwing the most expensive part of your rig after every take (the led). Please flirt with that thought and any ideas and suggestions you might come up with. It is a problem that perhaps might get you too, a little bit nostalgic.
@runeofroses4287
@runeofroses4287 18 сағат бұрын
Obviously other components more complicated than the ones i listed are off the rules as well, like any other form of led clip but the og friction based, or pop ups. Xtr
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 10 сағат бұрын
Hi there, The solution to your problem is very simple and you can easily purchase everything you need from a sea fishing tackle shop. All you need is some 0.40 monofilament mainline for mainline and hooklink, thread a lead (in-line or swivel) onto the mainline, then a 6mm buffer bead, then add a mainline swivel and tie it secured to the mainline. You’ve just created a simple free running ledger and that’s all I use (the version I use and show on this channel is just a bit more technical). Then use some of the mainline to make a mono hair or mono D rig and tie that to the mainline swivel. The hooklink should be 20 to 30 cm long. Then mount a bait. I use boilies but you can use loads of other baits. Cast out and wait. Here’s my mono hair video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqupmqGXbpeVqK8 Ideally you should use rig tubing as it protects the flanks of the carp during the fight but at the end of the day it’s your decision. Many lakes will insist on this but not all. Hope that helps 👍

Ok back to Kew, the bailiff locked up, locked us in to catch this pike, 2 days/nights 9 rods and the plan was to take it to the Thames river by car. It eat every bait, every optonics bleeped 9 rods, you can't tell me a fish is not clever.

I don't see anybody pushing float fishing for carp. Is this because there far less money to be made on float gear or is float fishing not allowed at many venues?
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 11 сағат бұрын
Float fishing is great for catching small carp especially if there's plenty of them as you can really get them going. It's just not an efficient method for specimen carp lakes because the time between bites can be hours, can be days.

Is the silt build up caused by the other lakes running into it?
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 18 сағат бұрын
Well, it's mostly to do with lead fall accumulated over decades before we owned it. The inflow of water is filtered by weir boards.

Silt depths vary greatly on estate lakes, and there's a big difference between healthy aerobic silt that contains lots of life and black stinking anaerobic silt. There are hundreds of features to fish to and finding these features is part of the game 😊
