Man that camera lens was annoying there! Thankfully it doesn’t last too long. I’m still blown away by that acceleration! However, as I always say, there’s more to performance than straight line. I’m really looking forward to track mode, active noise cancellation, and torque vectoring to be updated to the car. Of course, I’ll drive it again after some updates! Insane machine, truly. Also, a huge thanks to Brandon (Tesla Flex) for loaning this car! He’s now on KZbin so check out this link: kzbin.info/door/IMasKY5YlgzcOmxVW4loaw

Software can add torque vectoring and power acceleration in the turns but not without a track pack brake upgrade and shouldn’t it have come with that as an option package? If that’s all it lacked it would be doable but it’s not going to get quieter or more enjoyable even with a driver stalk and round wheel. I’ve heard it said that a one trick pony charms for only so long. That road noise is constant and make the Air sound like the long distance EV choice and the EQS a bank vault solidity that lets you escape the here and now noises along your daily commute. The Taycan (Cross Turismo😍) and RS eTron GT the curvy road drivers choice and long trip pleasurable haulers. With a pack of dogs it’s the Cross Turismo with rear steering hands down. 🎯

@@BrowncoatFairy You're so wrong. Round steering wheels on a car with this type of steering ratio is just superior compared to "yokes". "yokes" have their places in real racing cars where you have a much tighter steering ratio so that you dont need to turn it more than 180 degrees or simply because on a track you don't have intersections, parking lots and generally tight turning spots. On a car like this it's just a big dumb compromise. Ask yourself why so many car companies don't put these type of steering wheels from their racing cars on a street cars.

Great review. Love the honesty. I do think the Tesla UI is one of the most underrated parts of the brand. It’s more intuitive than anything else and it’s not even close. I’m sure plenty of people get used to the yoke but, what’s the benefit? Unique ≠ innovation

Completely agree with the UI thing and the yoke. I Think track mode software update will fix most of your complaints about the Plaid's handling and braking, just like in the Model 3, you'll be able to set the front/rear power delivery, reduce stability control that keeps braking in the corners and heating up the brakes, set the regen to be more powerful (M3P does that) to take stress out of the brakes and make them last longer without heavy fading, and probably with the 2 rear motors you'll even be able to control and set to different levels the torque vectoring! On top of that there could be some space to further improve the suspension via software updates. For the type of car, i think the Plaid already does well in the canyons, you are an experienced and fast driver! And it's cool it will further improve with software updates! And the price... you could swap the yoke, new rims and tyres, full custom racing suspension, carboceramic brakes with 6 piston calipers, racing seats, and you still wouldn't spend half the price difference between Plaid S and a Taycan with all those mods
@floorit4443
@floorit4443 3 жыл бұрын
I think for athletic backroad driving, sport or even chill is superior to plaid mode. The plaid drive mode has too much power (insane levels of power) and it just shuts down any on-throttle during steering inputs. Probably will be fixed with a new sw update. The car is actually one of the best handling 4800lb cars out there, it just gets locked down in plaid mode because of oversensitive stability control.

If you ever get a chance try the Bolt’s regen- drive in L mode and use the paddle behind the steering wheel on the left. It’s so much fun in city traffic with the strong regen and front wheel driving torque steer that you have to wrestle with a bit. You can even be holding the steering wheel paddle and simultaneously press the accelerator and control the amount of regen that way as well. On the the Model S I don't like that it doesn't have stalks and Yoke steering wheel, looks awful. Which one should I buy?

Most Americans don't actually know how to drive in the twisties or even find it fun. I see the Plaid appealing to the same mentality that made the recent supercharged Dodge sedans popular, "Hey you guys, Watch this!" I drive (or ride) fast on certain lonely twisty roads I know or on track. I've driven and owned lots of fast cars but never had more fun than diving into corners fender to fender on track with Miatas (or Ducatis). After the _MotorTrend_ review I have been looking forward to you taking a Lucid GT up your mountain. I have a Lucid GT reserved but was impressed by your EQS review. Test drives in my future I suppose. I like to travel across the country and those two seem valid comfortable cruisers. One day I *really* hope to see that electric Miata or even an electric 718.

One hand steering works perfectly and efficiently with the yoke for significant direction changes of any sort. The yoke is a paradigm shift and I recommend getting used to one hand rather than perseverating over traditionally shaped wheel's hand over hand. The yoke really gets the steering wheel out of the way.

Few comments on this excellent othwerwise video. As for price comparison, I think there is no point in comparing Plaid price to other cars prices, it woud make more sense to compare the Long Range version (price wise) to other cars. The only difference between Plaid and Long Range is this stupidly quick acceleration and this is a feature you don't really get on any other car (apart from those 2 million bucks). The 40k you pay extra gives you this stupidly quick acceleration and so it's a bit unfair to compare it feature wise against other cars in this price range, as none of those other cars has this feature. Remove it, and you get 90k car and not 130k car and then you can a more fair comparison price wise. As for the sound dampening, Tesla is going to release the software update enabling active sound cancellation (like in EQS) and it should improve the experience greatly. Something worth mentioning I think. As for the yoke, people say you need few days to get used to it and I saw some sceptics being conviced to it (and finding it better for their driving experience than the wheel) after those few days of acclimatization. For know, I also remain a sceptic in this regard, especially I'm not sure about emergency maneuvers, but who knows. Once again, excellent vide, as always. Keep up the good work.

I own a refresh- you do need a couple of days to get used to the yoke. After that, everything comes naturally. I was recently in a situation where I needed to drive my friends car and going back to a regular steering wheel felt really weird lol. As for road noise, yes it’s there… on the 21” rims with super thin tires. Road noise is just a side effect of that. However, I still feel like my car is impressively quiet and extremely smooth on certain roads. There is very very little wind noise and with the imminent noise canceling update I’m pretty sure this car will be eerily quiet. I have read in forums that the 19” rims and wheel combo make a world of a difference and I sometimes wish I would have gone that route. In the end, I can’t imagine a better driving experience than the Model S or incoming Model X. Really amazing vehicles you can’t go wrong with.

Yea, always wondered why everyone was complaining about brakes, then I looked into it and turns out all performance Teslas use nice big brembos but that’s not the issue, it’s the disc/rotor, if they had carbon ceramic discs the brakes would be comparable to Porsches. So yea that’s why

Face it, the vast majority of Tesla Plaid buyers get them for one thing....they are the fastest cars on the planet (a caveat here that I should mention is other European cars that come fairly close to the Plaids performance usually cost at least double the Plaids base price, and the Rimac Nevera, which is about a half second faster than a Plaid, last week was certified legal for all countries safety requirements, will only have 150 models made and costs $2,400,000 before options!) that you can buy from a manufacturer that you don't have to spend an additional $20-$30K to modify them to still be slower than a S Plaid. AND for you folks that agree and have interest in speed rather than how far we can go on a charge, or how much your Teslas will be worth 3 years from now, or the minor fit and finish issues that are always mentioned by Tesla haters, and are usually taken care by Tesla when mentioned when you buy this Model, this will be right up your alley! The TOP LINE Lucid Air offers 1,111HP, while the Plaid offers a supposedly 1,020HP, BUT there is a KZbin video that has a Plaid on a 4 hub dyno that develops 1,101HP STOCK from the factory. The Plaid also weighs approximately 400 pounds LESS than the Lucid Air, and averages between $20,000 to $30,000 Less than the advertised $179,900 than the Lucid costs DEPENDING ON OPTIONS CHOSEN for each car. Last month a Tesla Model S Plaid in Napierville, Quebec set the new record for the fastest quarter-mile time for the electric sedan at 8.83 seconds and 161mph. The Model S had a stripped out interior for weight savings, as well as SV104 wheels wrapped in Mickey Thompson drag radials at the rear and Michelin PS4 tires on the front. Not content with the blistering fast time, the same Model S Plaid has set a new record this week. At the same track in Napierville the Model S crossed the line in just 8.77 seconds at 162.55mph (261.60km/h), a 5.67 second 1/8 mile time and an outstanding 125MPH to 162MPH time in 3.1 seconds!!! As for what changed that allowed the car to go faster this time the owner, TMC user mulot30th, said there was an additional 60lb weight saving over the previous attempt due to someone else being behind the wheel on the run. Additionally he said there a slight change to the suspension. “Main change is suspension geometry change (slight) which reduce “tire drag” a little bit at least that is what I intended to do with that and have worked,” he said. Interestingly, the top speed at the end of his quarter mile run of 162.55mph is inches away from the electronically limited top speed (when not in Track Mode) of 163mph. As first told earlier this week, Quebec-based Ingenext was able to hack their way past that limiter and reached a top speed of 216mph (347km/h). As for this Model S Plaid, the owner says that while the car does not feel like it is slowing down when crossing the line, he feels there is not much room to improve beyond 8.77s with the current setup, but a BIG brake option available from Tesla and several other Tesla specific after market parts dealers at a much reduced price, and TOP OF THE LINE HIGH SPEED RATED STREET TIRES should also be used! You can check out the record runs both of TOP SPEED and FASTEST QUARTER MILE time on several KZbin 9
