I own a 2017 XC90 T8 Inscription Pro with EV range of 18 miles. This car was light years ahead of the pack until 2022 in-terms of refinement, luxury and practicality. I tested the XC90 T8 2024 a few months back and it felt a much more nimbler car (suspension, steering, EV experience and engine insulation). I also own a VW ID-3. I watched closely the update of the XC90 T8 which came out last week. I was disappointed that it did not have the updates I expected like Higher density EV battery to allow for 70+ miles EV range, 4 wheels steering, DC charging and improved self driving which I would have liked to upgrade to because as much as a nice car the EX90 is I use the car for the long trips and do not want to go fully electric in this segment yet. I think Volvo missed the boat with updating the XC 90 drive train to something similar to the "Extended Range" technology similar to the Chinese manufacturers example given Li Auto and others do where the combustion engine primarily charges the EV battery and the car mostly drive on EV mode. Coupled with the anticipated updates I mention above the XC90 T8 would have been unbeatable again for more 5 years to come like it did when it was updated in 2016.

On a somewhat tangential subject, I still think this is very relevant to the driver experience: All the displays I see have a LOT of reflections. The chargers are the worst, for multiple reasons-the type of display, and their being outside, sometimes even in direct sunlight. Some things can get really hard to read. This is not a failure of design for those providing these products. It's more that we need better displays, across the board, WRT reflections. It's not necessarily such a problem for indoor TVs and PC monitors. But for chargers, automotive screens, smartphones, and so on, this is a real problem.

The EX90’s excellent attributes make the less appealing bits all the more disappointing. Sad that a $90K car asks over $200 for a fixed sunroof shade. I’d much prefer a smaller, lighter expanse of glass with a mechanical shade. Also sad that the base model doesn’t have the upgraded suspension as an option, while the top spec car can’t be had with the smaller, lighter 20” wheels. I will take the ~7% efficiency gain of smaller wheels over the esthetics of filled up wheel wells any day. Particularly in a nearly 6,000 lb brick that cannot live up to the sporty pretense. If the double wishbones and air suspension provide a buttoned down but complaint ride, that would be my reason to tick the option box. That’s why I opted for the msport package on my i4 e40 even though that mandated larger wheels that I hoped to avoid. Here’s hoping that Lucid develops a more thoroughly desirable SUV.
