I-Drive / TorqueMaster to Torsion Spring Conversion - DIY Tutorial

DIY walkthrough on replacing your Wayne Dalton iDrive / TorqueMaster setup with a real Torsion Spring setup, compatible with all garage door openers. You'll need to pick up a torsion bar at a local garage door company. You could call them and ask them what size springs you need and get a price from them while you're at it. Thanks, I was able to use this video to convert my broken torquemaster spring to the industry standard. I have a 16 foot door 9100 Wayne dalton door. I bought a conversion kit on ebay for 98 dollars. It came with everything except the spring bar. I bought that for 60 dollars. Works great. For spring winders. I bought a 36 inch peice of 1/2 inch rod and cut it in half with my Sawsall to get two 18 inch winding bars.

Just replaced the Torque master plus Springs today. They were broken, paid 198.00 for the whole kit. Replaced within 30 mins. The duty cycle for these Springs is 11k but I got close to 14k. The kit was expensive, maybe I’ll convert to something else if it breaks again.

So what is the actual number for the complete conversion kit? I have a 14' x 7' insulated door. Didn't you have to weigh your door before ordering?

I used DDMgaragedoor for my parts. they're online and have a lot of instructions online. Some of their parts are in the form of "kits", but mostly you'll have to determine the parts you need, including the springs you need, from the web site. They will probably help you on the phone, although I didn't ask for tech help. The reason I say they probably will be very helpful is because one of my projects was for a _very_ light door and they called me to verify the parts because they do not get requests for springs that light normally.

New tube is required. Totally different size.

You definitely need a new tube. The tube from the Crapmaster is not compatible with regular torsion springs.

Bought the tube and springs from a local garage door installer. Just act like you know what you're talking about and they shouldn't have any problems selling you what you need.

That I drive does look cool, but I can see why it doesn't last long. installing an actual metal center bearing? somebody doesn't mess around. ;p When your springs wear out, an online place like DDM has a calculator where you can choose long life springs if you wanna pony up the extra dough. For my place, just used regular 10 year springs, but for another project, I got some mid-grade springs that should last about 40 years of "normal" use.
