Seems like Polestar have invented a backup energy source for low battery situations, they start pulling zeropoint energy from the quantum foam of the universe and suddenly you have a one thousand kilometer range! Wow. They should just remove the battery and drive with zeropoint energy all the time. Without the battery mass you could get like 2000 km range? 😅

While i can understand that you like to keep everything safe, i would like to see how the car finally dies and also if restarting is possible to get one more shot to get it off the road to a safe location. That the range estimator goes bananas is a bug Polstar should have caught during development. Just shows how unfinished vehicles get released the the customer, the beta tester.

I think the charge port should be same side as steering wheel for what every country. Since when you go home you can open the door step back and plug in ... done. Also if have to park in a tight spot you'll make room to open the driver's door and so you'll have room for charger

Thanks for another great video:)! Although I hope never to be in that situation with my own Polestar 2, it's comforting to know what to expect should it happen. FYI regarding the conflicting range estimates, a recent OTA update added a setting to let you change the dash range display so it is fed from the more realistic range assistant app that accounts for current conditions (driver & climate influences). Every single OTA update I've got in more than two years now has come with at least one little improvement like this. As for the projected range numbers going berserk, I bet the developer would claim that's a "feature" to get your attention in case you didn't notice you had run the car down to 0%.

the chances of you having to charge on the road, means having Charge port same side as Tesla chargers means you can properly use NACS (north America tesla chargers), where this would have been more of a danger if you have to stand for like 5 minutes holding a gas tank to ICE car on the left side, not an issue on EV. You're more likely to get towed than charged. Even in US. where you can use F-150 to charge another car, it would take FOREVER to do that, and it would be more convenient to hook up car and tow it.

@@bjornnyland Impressive, but most likely the BMS did not estimate the full battery capacity correctly. If I remember correctly, car was brand new, not many charging cycles so BMS was overly pessimistic of the displayed percentage and range. 6.9 kWh lower buffer is way too much even for Tesla.

Could you do a zero mile test with one of the Stellantis eCMP cars? I could not find a good reference for what to expect (carwow did not describe what happened in their video very well). I never went below 3% in my e-208 over 15 months (only a few times below 8%) and never saw turtle, but it's always good to be prepared and informed.
@robinm.6007
@robinm.6007 10 ай бұрын
I can answer to you because when I had it, I drove my e-208 until it died. It was back in 2021 so I hope a lot of changes has been made to the BMS, but still interesting to share. I got the turtle at around 4% left, I parked it in my garage and cranked the heat to the max to discharge it to 0%. Between 4% and the shutdown, I had literally a dozen messages saying that the battery is too low. Then finally when the car shutdown, I had a message saying electrical system fault. Back then there was a known fault in the BMS which didn't allow to either charge or discharge the car when it hit true 0%. I had to disconnect the 12V battery, wait 10 seconds, and reconnect it again. Then I could charge. I saw no change in my range or SOH back then.
@Tomaskom
@Tomaskom 10 ай бұрын
@@robinm.6007 Great, thanks! It's not from driving, so you cannot judge the power limit etc, but still very helpful. Good to know the AC will happily run till the end and warnings are plentiful. Can you guess how much is there "below zero", if anything, based on how long it took to burn through it till dead with the AC heat? From what I found so far it seems there is really no accessible emergency buffer below zero. And turtle onset may be based on cell voltage or similar, rather than SoC, as I didn't get it at 3% - and heard others got it as high as 6% and as low as 2%. If you saw SoH, were you using OBD? If so, do you remember what was the lowest cell voltage before dying? I still had decent 3.35V at 3% (dipping slightly below 3.3V under max load) and about 25kW power limit.
@robinm.6007
@robinm.6007 10 ай бұрын
@@Tomaskom I would say I spent half an hour with the heat cranked up to the max. I parked my car with 0% displayed, it was really stressful, let me explain. I was in my street happily, because I just did 2 hard accelerations and the SOC dropped from 4% to 1%, then 0% in a few seconds. It was less than 300 meters total to burn that energy. I don't think I reached 0% SOC, I think the BMS was wonky. But back then it was scary because the car was sluggish. Maybe my battery was uncalibrated or unbalanced, the car had 5.000kms and was 6 months old, but it stayed 3 months parked at the dealership for multiple issues, which could explain the weird behavior when I reached the bottom of pack. I think there was in 2021 a good 2-3 KWh buffer in those cars, give or take a few hundreds Wh. Also it was in summer and the battery was warm, ambient temp was around 30°c, even in my garage. Back then the BMS was really different than now, so don't take my words for any value I give, I think and hope Peugeot made good progress on that, because wow the BMS was... questionable sometimes. I used Car Scanner yes, but at that time I didn't think about writing everything up, which is something I do now with my Model 3.
@Tomaskom
@Tomaskom 10 ай бұрын
@@robinm.6007 Exactly as you say, the SoC can drop fast near the end if the BMS hasn't seen it for a while, or if the cells are not well balanced. If that happened driving straight from the dealership where it sat for months, both factors could be at play. Full heat is at least 5kW, so 2-3kWh makes perfect sense over half an hour. The total buffer is 5kWh AFAIK (50kWh nominal, 45 usable), but I believe those 5kWh should not be accessible, also part is on the top and part bottom. Btw mine is very early production (registered Feb 2020) and I got it secnd hand before summer last year. So I'd assume it would be similar, although I got all the firmware (BMS and such) updated in January on my request. Car Scanner records and stores the readings, unless you disable it, that's how I found the values I just wrote. But it's a long time and you might have swapped phones or wiped it in the meantime.
@robinm.6007
@robinm.6007 10 ай бұрын
@@Tomaskom I did the test a few months after getting it back from repairs, so I would say the battery saw a large scale of the SOC, I usually drove down to 10% and recharged back to 100% as my only charging equipment was a GreenUp at work back then. Peugeot also did a weird thing back then : 100% was only 41KWh as owners complained not to have regen braking at 100% (which is normal but Peugeot customers weren't tech savvy and didn't have the same EV knowledge as an early Tesla adopter for example). It was quite a weird BMS back then, I hope things have improved now! Good idea to ask for all updates, as Peugeot had a really shitty charging curve before mid to end of 2021. I don't have anymore the phone I used for Car Scanner sadly, I can't give you any value.

Bjorn, The charge port on the right is objectively better. Charging doesn’t only happen in dedicated locations like gas stations or supercharging areas.. when you’re parked and charging on the side of the road, like you were here, its easier and safer to just handle the cables on the sidewalk (or simply out of the road).
