I liked the yellow because it reminded me of a dress I made in clothing construction at university 50 plus years ago, when my hair color was similar to yours. I love how the eggplant turned out and I think it's a color that I can wear now that I have white hair. I'm going to look for the dye in my local stores. Thank you for taking us on this journey.

The purple would look so striking with white hair!

Hi katie. New subscriber. Love your quirky sense of humor. I dye. And my favorite way of course is in the washing machine. It's the easiest. But on the stove top I keep it in the pot and use tongs to change positions of the item so it gets uniformity. I love purple too..and just used the powder boxes from dollarama here in Canada.. super cheap.i dyed some cotton lace doilies and a cotton dress. Cheers

I loved the dress when it was yellow and was holding my breath during the dying process. Oh my word, the purple is fabulous and suits you so much more. I vaguely remember dying stuff many many years ago with Dylon powder that came in little tins, this has put a whole new light on my thrifting. Thanks again for a great video. 🙌🤩🥰

That's a great color for you, it brings out the rosey cheeks and makes you look so naturally pretty so yes, do more of that color!

Excellent work! The yellow dress is nice, but dyeing it purple is an excellent idea since the purple suits you better than the yellow.

Love! Subscribed! I'm down for purple rain. Rit dye likes a generous amount of salt and a bit of dish soap to dye well. To get really even color, you need a huge dye only pot you leave on the stove and you stir and stir. When you soak without stirring you get fold lines. But it looks great anyway.

People covered the buckets to maintain the heat. It helps to color perfectly.

Ooh! Great result on you colour adventures :) The purple might look so radiant especially because the yellowish colour is its complementary colour. Old artist trick to really get purples to shine :) Many times if you colour a natural fibre garment, the sewing thread can still still polyester and doesn’t pick the colour the same way as the fabric does. But I think with this colour combinations the yellow stitches look like a small decorative detail. (Not so nice if someone had done very lazy and messy sewing, with wonky lines and corrections that thankfully vanished nicely into the light coloured fabric, then decide later to colour it dark, only to have that whole monstrosity of sewing sin jump out like it was in spotlights… 😅)

I am so glad I came upon this video! I have a dress that was a “test” with a bedsheet but it is the most boring unattractive beige. Rit dye will be my next “sewing” item of purchase!

Yes! Dye it a dark rich color and it feels like a whole new dress! And if it doesn't turn out perfect, either dye it black or call it a good experiment. Good luck!

I’ve dyed a few things, changing bed sheet colors to my desired colors. I found that doing the whole process in my top load washer is easiest for me. It continuously agates so I can get even color. I also add salt and dish soap and then the fixative after. It’s great too to refresh sheets for my bed with a new color. Love how your dress turned out. I heard somewhere if you’re planning to dye what you sew to use polyester thread in that color. The only problem with that for me is deciding ahead of time what color I want. Thanks for sharing your experience in the video!

I always worry about dying my machine and it'll get on my next load of laundry. Do you find that to be a problem?
@CasablancaCargo2 жыл бұрын
@@KatieMakesStuff I was terrified at first and tried dying on the stove top but got blotches and inconsistencies. I used the smallest water level on my machine, on the hottest setting according to the Rit dye website. The dye was consistent all over and I was hooked. After I did the fixative, I washed the garment in hot water and mild detergent. After that, I poured 3 cups of bleach into the highest level of hot water, and filled the bleach dispenser. Added 3 old towels and did a wash cycle. The dyed color came off the drum. Just to play it safe, the next regular wash was all whites. After these results, i only dye in the washing machine. When I dye a garment, I throw in extra fabric in a netted bag, because it tends to tangle, or a dingy white tee shirt. When I dyed my light brown dress spiced paprika, I also dyed a king size yellow bedsheet. Anyway, it’s almost addicting now, dying cotton fabric the color I want. Makes thrifting sheets a dream.

The yellow was a pretty dress, and your shape, but not your best colour. But the purple!!! BTW dyeing is also a great way to make over a pale T-shirt that has lost its pristine colour: greyish whites especially 😉
@beatricepineda59234 ай бұрын
Both colors are beautiful but yes the eggplant purple suits you while the yellow washed out your facial features. You have medium contrast so this rich purple was a great choice.

Okay so I was in the “pro-yellow” camp but that purple is doooooope. Looks so great on you and in general…the only time I’ve ever used Rit Dye I used the machine dye instructions on the bottle, and it came out pretty even? I honestly cannot remember if it stained my machine. 😬
@KatieMakesStuff2 жыл бұрын
I was pretty Meh about the yellow but am OBSESSED with the purple! My dryer is looking a little lilac, but the washer didn't seem to get stained at all.

The white Rit dye turned my white clothes a little yellow, which is opposite of what they claim. I realize it could depend on clothing material, but it did it to simple cotton too.
@KatieMakesStuff Жыл бұрын
That's strange...maybe try adding the smallest amount of blue will help tone out the yellow. That's one of those historical tricks to keep clothes whiter and maybe it'll work in this case.

How did it not turn brown? I have a few things on a back that are accent yellow and wanted to try and spot hit them with eggplant. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Looks great!
@meganparish14317 ай бұрын
By the looks of things, the dress was light enough to pick up the deep purple colour properly. Leaving it marinading for four hours also likely helped. From what I understand about Rit, you’re only supposed to soak items for an hour but hey. As for spot treating I think rit makes dye that comes in a spray bottle? You’ll have to check whether it’ll suit your fabric or not
@noname-tj3rp2 жыл бұрын
Love! does the dye come out at all?
@KatieMakesStuff2 жыл бұрын
It probably will a bit. RIT makes a fixative but I didn't use it yet. I think I need to fix some of the spotty places then use it to keep everything in place.

Hi,can pure golden dress can be a transform to hot pink or royal blue??
@KatieMakesStuff8 ай бұрын
With the yellow undertones the pink may be more of a coral color and royal blue may turn a shade of green. Certainly worth trying but it may not be what you were hoping for.

It looks great! I have a skirt I want to dye purple, it's currently more sunflower yellow. 🌻 You dress looks pale yellow. Any advice for me?
@KatieMakesStuff2 жыл бұрын
Purple seems to go on yellow really well, but I would say use more dye then you think you need, agitate it regularly, and use a container a bit larger than you'd think so it can submerge without being crowded. And remember that you can always dye it again if it looks splotchy. GOOD LUCK!!
