Tacking layers together is something I've seen done with ballet tutus, to prevent the layers from separating out or becoming too fluffy. Called swing catches I think.
@deadbybee
@deadbybee 3 жыл бұрын
But I think she wanted the layers to separate more? Like the flounces kinda "stuck together" when she was dancing in the beginning, but at the end, due to the added frills and flounces, the skirt opened up a lot more, like a rose
@johnriccardi1677
@johnriccardi1677 3 жыл бұрын
I believe the term is called french tacks. A chain of thread similar to a belt loop. You can make them as long or short as needed to achieve the effect you need. Lots of earlier dresses have them to hold a lining in place without the constraint of tacking the layers together thus allowing movement but not total shifting as she was experiencing. I noticed them used on wedding gowns to hold the layers together but still allow movement.
@bigdadbeefsticks
@bigdadbeefsticks 3 жыл бұрын
@@deadbybee I think you're misunderstanding. The goal is to control the movement of the petticoat not open it more. That involves *how* each layer flows and opens up. Tacking it down in certain areas prevent the frills from compressing together in a spin so each layer can only go so far. Each individual rose petal opens up less the closer to the center it is; so the closer to the hoop skirt, the more tightly tacked down the skirt layers will be.
@LadyLocket
@LadyLocket 3 жыл бұрын
@@bigdadbeefsticks I agree, watching the Films dance I thought there is no way the dress and petticoat weren't flying up away from the hoop more than shown, unless of course the closest layers are attached to it somehow. As you mentioned even just a few well-placed tacks will make a huge difference and is common in hiding structural garments and aid an elegant movement none weighted outerwear.

Bella Mae: I am going throw this petticoat in the washing machine. Me: The madwoman. I don't think I have ever been more stressed by a wash cycle. That being said, awesome video. I am really glad you got to make the changes you wanted to the petticoat and that it is closer to the concept you had in your head. When the petticoat was up on the table, it looked like a modern art installation. Also, don't feel bad about tripping on the dress while dancing. After all, they had to make shorter versions for the movie to accommodate the running and dancing scenes and the actors still ended up wrecking the hems by stepping on them.

I think the tacking technique sounds like a great idea! From what I've gleaned from various making-of ballet costume videos I've watched, tutus are made this way too, with the different layers tacked to each other - not so tightly as to completely impede movement, but enough to keep things under control and falling back into place as the ballerina moves.

I think adding the frills to the hoop skirt will definitely help (if not totally solve) the issue of the hoop being seen all the time. I rewatched the dance scenes from the movie at like 0.25 speed and I think you can actually see the hoop quite often, but because of the frills attached to it you don't notice that you're seeing the hoop and not just the petticoat. You can kind of tell which frills are petticoat and which are attached to the hoop because there's like a slight gap sometimes which you can then use to "follow" the hoop frill from there (until she stops moving and it's completely hidden again), very sneaky & smart trick to disguising a hoop skirt on a ball gown I must say!

Oh man, when I was a kid I had a barbie doll with a big dress, It might have been one of those new year barbies, but I remember I lost one of her dark blue shoes, so I replaced it with a light blue shoe that matched. Your shoes at the end just shot me back in time twenty years haha

I thought the first make was gorgeous, but I absolutely understand the issues you had with it. The remake is ASTOUNDING! I sincerely appreciate you sharing your bumps in the road. It’s nice to know I’m not alone in having hiccups in projects, and in being a perfectionist. While I can’t speak for everyone, I know I speak for many when I say you should do whatever ultimately thrills you with this dress. It’s the last one, and it’s for YOU. If that means fewer videos and/or re-dos, that’s just fine. Just do what brings you joy. Much love, and sending warm weather vibes your way! PS: Your doggo is so CUTE!!! Love, love, LOVE fur baby content!!!

No matter how hard you try to convince yourself that is not perfect you are utterly wrong, it is perfect, it looks perfect, the way it moves, twirls and flares is simple perfect and mesmerizing, and I'm being as objective as a sagittarius can be, it also looks better on the inside than the original dress sooo there's that... From a fellow perfectionist, trust me, it is PERFECT, can't honestly wait to see the final dress! Oh and the vlogging style gave us a nice sense of reality and warmth, keep it up!

I’m very late to the party but oh my!!! What a difference that made! My heart was breaking for you throughout the video for you; you sounded so defeated. The end result was amazing, you “edits” really did make such a huge difference. Attaching the skirt to the corset is genius. It gives your twirls a hard stop that makes the twirl bounce back beautifully.

I LOVE your detailed description of the flow and spin of the petticoats! It was so visually artistic! I lived it and could understand what you saw in the original and what you wanted to see in the improved version! Absolutely incredible work! I adore the color scheme! 🥰

I needed this. Convinced me that yes, it is worth it to take off the fabric layer that I'm totally hating on the dress I need for next week. Bummer cause it was expensive, but it just isn't working

When I say that seeing that go in the wash gave me anxiety... 😅 It looks so good, though! The addition of frills and flounces to the hoop was such a good idea, and the softened and tweaked petticoats have great movement and a wonderful shape. Such a glorious confection!

It looks way better than before (not saying it looked bad before). Thumbs up for the courage to retouch it and make it different. Btw, snow in April? Same thoughts here, in the Czech republic. In may, we've had 3 warm days so far, now it's raining, the rest of the snow on mountains is melting and rivers are rising in some areas. Great spring! Thank you for this video
