Appreciate the walkthrough! Only, how are we suppose to know how to arrange the keg-taps? Are there clues, or is it a case of trail & error?

There are clues! When they send the key down, you'll notice that one of the taps looks like a keyhole. Inside the hat there's a guide for which barrels to turn off, and if you put on one of the the masks you'll see places that the butler touched, which will let you know how to open up the desk and which swords use to open the secret passage! As for who to gas, and when, that's just about watching the map and figuring out what order to kill them in!

Some personal discoveries: If you send up a pinless smoke grenade instead of the mimic mask, it'll almost immediately skip you to the "on alert" part. (You don't have to press the call button) It doesn't matter where the smoke grenade is when you detonate it, it will always dismiss the use of the gun.
