main dealer mechanic/MOT tester of 45yrs here, the first thing we do is look at the MOT history online, so we have a base from where to start when testing the car, it helps make sure you miss NOTHING on your test. some customers get an independent check done, the best one i have found over the years is the RAC, it usually mirrors my findings. moral of the story - do your homework, tell them you have checked online, and you want a "clean" MOT and full service, with the internal invoice to back it up... ... and NEVER buy a car with a WETBELT...

Not all car traders are dodgy!! This annoys me when garages act in this way, as it fuels the publics general opinion of traders. Remember if you’re buying a second car you’re not buying a new one, we send all our cars to an independent MOT station and sell them with a fresh 12 months and we also repair all the failure points and advisories. However people seem to think It is our job to turn them back to as new condition, and then we have to warrant the car for six months afterwards. After the rent and staff are paid it’s an extremely hard way to make a living!

yes, i work for a family dealer, we don't make much money on the sale [high prep bills] but they keep coming in for service, mot etc, so it is worth it... the most money we are making is fixing other dealers disgraceful repairs/ missed/dangerous faults, we are fully booked into feb now, and it is only getting worse, how do people sleep at night... and, yes, the customers always thinks a four year old car is brand new...
@ImpulsiveAndy13 күн бұрын
I was under no illusion it was a new car. I'd checked over the condition of the bodywork and interior and was happy. I was told they don't sell cars with any advisories so knowing a bit about MOTs I knew this ruled out a lot of issues. My issue is that I wasn't given a true indication of the mechanical state. If I'd known it needed tyres, subframe bushes, rear axle bushes, the vacuum pipe fixing, a lambda sensor fitting, a front caliper, a rear caliper, a new sump and other bits and pieces, I'd have walked away 😐

Don’t forget they do a full service 👍 apart from they don’t. I understand the comments above and support garages that do right by their customers but not a single dealer should be sticking up for this behaviour. Saying a customer wants an old car making new and how you lose money. Thats the business you choose. I’m a landlord of properties, I make little to no money and anything I do is taxed to high heaven, is it the tenants fault? No it’s my own for choosing this industry. I’ve seen a used dealer near me so bad that when a friend bought a car from them, it really horrified me when I saw the 2007 BMW 320d that they sold him; the front had clearly been in an accident at some point and someone had tried to use filler and sandpaper to cover things up. What concerned me more was how the bumper refused to go back on normally, leaving a huge 10mm gap between the adjacent panels; suggesting damage to the chassis. You could honestly slot your pinky finger through! And the lens cleaning jets were left popping out because of the misfit. Inside a lot of plastic and rubber parts had melted like glue, and air con was not working, turned out the belt and crank pulley was on its final legs. And the shamelessness of the dealer to demand £2000

But the problem is nobody bothers taking them to court. So if you buy a bad car and let them off, you're part of the problem. I saw what looked like a decent car for sale recently, sounded too good to be true. It looked mint, 7 years old but had apparently only done 6,000 miles. That sounded odd so I looked closer at the photos. It was clear that the leather driver's seat had been sat in for a lot more than 6,000 miles. So I started by doing a search for reviews of the company on google and sure enough there was a slew of bad reviews about the dealer. Sometimes that's all it takes. Be diligent and remember, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Try to get at least a 3 month warranty, then you can take it to a garage after you've bought it and get it checked over, even re-MOT it and if it fails you've got something on them in writing. Ideally get an AA or RAC inspection or take someone you know with you who knows a lot more about cars than you (but not your dad or best mate who think they're an expert). Don't touch it without a test drive - dodgy dealers don't like you test driving their cars so they'll try to put you off. I even avoid test drives "by appointment only" because cars with dodgy engines are often difficult to start or sound rough when cold so they warm then up first. But ideally just buy through a reputable dealer even if it means paying a bit more and saving up a bit longer. If you're desperate get a cheap runabout to tide you over, or just use the bloody bus for a few weeks.

Bought a car from Cinch (BMW 3 series 21 plate), car was great but it had just passed the MOT in the BCA centre (parent company that owns cinch and webuyanycar). Brakes were squeaky and worn down, I asked them to be checked to which cinch obliged and the local KwikFit advised new pads and discs all around (which Cinch footed the bill for). I've never trusted any MOT that has been done on a car whilst in the custody of a used car dealership, chances are they have a mate at the local garage who will do MOTs with no advisories.

I think if you want a car without deteriorated bushes, new tyres, no leaks and everything perfect then perhaps you need to buy a new car or nearly new car. Buying a used 17 year old car should be gone into expecting there will be some issues, if you’re expecting perfection buy new. Yes it’s possible to buy a near perfect 17 year old car but it’s not going to be £7k, it’ll be £20k and even then things might fail as it’s used and things deteriorate with time, things you might not even see. Get real and understand it’s an old car.
@Buck336613 күн бұрын
So just on the limit tyres and binding brakes are acceptable now to put out to the public for a safe and roadworthy vehicle? The down pipe had one bolt missing. Was it THAT hard to source a 20p bolt and replace on this ‘60 point check”? When I pay 7 grand I want a car that won’t torque steer me into an oncoming car from excessive wear in the bushes, I’d like it not to have a brake binding so my bearing gets red hot and could fail, I’d also like a 240 bhp car to at least have enough tread to make it around a wet corner! See that’s why you pay £7000 at a car sales and not £4000 on someone’s driveway. To have a reputable dealer assess and sort these issues.

Some of the issues you mention are what I would consider to be expected or reasonable for a used car dealer not to find or even expected on a used car. If something really is an issue, the binding brake for instance then how they resolve it should be measure of the dealer. Also you don’t buy a car from a used car dealer so you can get a perfect car, because a 17 year old car is never going to be that. You buy from a dealer as there is some level of protection and if there is a real issue they’ll help you resolve it. Hopefully that’ll be the case here. You should also report the MOT testing station if you think the MOT has been faked. The tester will be prosecuted as will the MOT station if there's evidence of wrongdoing, an old friend of mine was done over 30 years ago and he has never tested another car since. I've heard of a place that will issue an MOT for about £100 and they don't even need the car so I'm sure there are at least a few places that will get your car an MOT for another year no questions asked. We're lucky in the UK that the vast majority of places are very reputable and we have a fairly robust standard in place to ensure dangerous cars are kept off the roads but there will always be a couple of rotten apples so it's buyer beware I suppose..

Alarm bells would be ringing in my head if all of these advisories suddenly disappeared from mot with no explanation and no paperwork to back it up, why didnt he ask these questions? did he not check the reviews? I guess he just wanted a very cheap Astra VXR and suffered the consequences. There's so many things he could've done completely for free prior to purchase. YES the dealership is in the wrong for selling a car with a dodgy ticket no doubt but how did he not notice the brake bind, the tyres on the limit or the handbrake only half working? *EDIT* you literally just mentioned they have terrible reviews so why tf did he buy it...* That genuinely baffles me. not realistic/fair is it doing a review on a business with 17 year old cars. You are ALWAYS going to find things wrong or not as they were when it left the factory at new. cars go through different owners over the years, get messed with. different mechanics work on them, they corrode, etc etc..... if you want a perfect car you must and only can buy brand new. You'd have been better doing this on perhaps a 3 or 4 year old car for it to be more valid right? Just a thought.... If I take perfect wheels off a car and put them on my car I could pass an MOT right? After the MOT test I could go home and put my original illegal slick tyres back on couldn't i and it doesn't invalidate the MOT?

The majority of Independent Dealers are excellent & do really care about their business & the cars they are retailing to the public. It is very easy for consumers to do their due diligence these days on both the car, & importantly the company they are buying from & there is accountability on both sides. As someone who is very passionate about our trade I needed to stand up for us dealers who do the job correctly not just when prepping & selling the car in the 1st instance but also when problems arise (which of course they can do on a used vehicle). Do your homework, be diligent & you will find good used cars at the majority of Independent Dealers.

You haven't exposed the secrets of used car dealerships. You have exposed ONE dodgy dealer. Clickbait title. You cant tar a whole industry with the same brush. You have made a video about your friend buying a car from a dodgy dealer without doing any due diligence.

There are hundreds of reputable dealers, main or second hand. However trust but verify is essential, look carefully or have a professional check, especially buying an older car. The problem we’re about to face is a scramble for ICE cars for those who don’t want EVs and that’ll cause no end of problems. Manufacturers are the in financial trouble currently and this is only bad for consumers. New cars are built too cheaply and too complicated. Especially as they become 7 years or older.

20 years trading. It's a difficult trade. It is all about how the dealer responds to after sale problems or full refunds. However some dealers do make bad choices. Many more check more. Older cars. Higher prices. As more desirable sport and classics are an insanely hard place to sell budget used motoring. Cars well under £8000. Under £6000. Under £4000. They're all older cars way way over 12-14-16 years old. They're literally so old need much more pre purchase checks. . Outside of the UK you need dealer licences. Sadly in the UK literally anyone can sell a used vehicle. The only checks really are MOT and independent inspections. Any bad seller will easily sell a poor merchandise vehicle in the UK

Acceptable to pick a car up and have the EML come on within 20 miles. With the handbrake fully applied the N/S could freely turn. That instantly says to me that it wasn't properly tested, nevermind all the rest of it. I wasn't looking for perfect, I was however looking for a car I didn't need to spend £1.5k on to get to a road legal condition.
