The stupidest part about this take was his objective wrongness about social anxiety. How can you in one breath say you’ve never had it and don’t relate, and then in another say that the show is objectively wrong about social anxiety and that it’s unrealistic? It’s very realistic about how it feels, and as someone that performs on stage, how she is having panic attacks before going on, and then in the zone while performing is 100% true to life.
@cantinadudes4 ай бұрын
I second this. Have been dealing with social anxiety all my life and while its sometimes exaggerated for comedic effect, the underlying thoughts and panic she experiences is completely realistic. I often freeze in public if people look at me for too long and for him to say its unrealistic is almost insulting, cause it shows that he has no empathy for people with social anxiety

@torahibiki4 ай бұрын
@@cantinadudesbut why? Freezing and being awkward in public isn't anxiety, it's just you not knowing hoe to talk to people. I kind of dislike people pretending it is. Real anxiety is when you feel you're trapped, like if you were in a well with walls all around you with no way to climb out, and progressively gets deeper and darker. That you feel a weight on your chest that will eventually crush you. The feeling to run at full speed pushing your body to the limit just to prove to yourself that you're not having a heart attack, but at the same time being scared to move. Constantly feeling dizzy, disoriented, and feeble 24/7. And progressively thinking that you will never get better and eventually thinking to yourself that the only way out is suicide. That's anxiety, those are panic attacks. Not some kid being awkward at not knowing what to say or how to interact with people. Because they were too lazy or unmotivated to talk to people, whenever family came over or school opened. And parents are at fault too because they don't teach kids how to interact with others. They just give a computer, a phone, or a tablet and their minds develop without human interaction. Humans need interactions. That's how we evolved. Its coded into our brains. And before you say stuff, like other people treated you wrong, or got bullied, and that's why you are so awkward, etc. That's just how it is. You're not a 100 dollar bill that everyone is going to like. Everyone has people whol both like them or hate them. But interactions is how to weed the good from the bad.

While the take on the anime itself is atrocious, the one moment I actually felt disgust is when Joey was telling people at a con that they don't have social anxiety because they're at the con and raising their hand after a question was asked. Criticizing a show is one thing. Telling someone else they don't have X mental health issue "because they don't look like it" or whatever, is actually fucking cringe. And I think that sheds a light on his opinion on Bocchi as well. Joey THINKS he understands social anxiety, but he's just completely wrong about it, and it looks like he just refuses to learn. Which... ugh... I don't hate him, but man, in my eyes, he really went from "He's a cool guy, he has a successful career, he does things in multiple areas, he makes pretty good videos, etc." to "Oh... I will never enjoy people who don’t have an anxiety disorder telling me and others who actually suffer from them how the disorder works. I was horrible in social situations. If I expect an interaction, sometimes even if I don’t, I plan for it. Run through every scenario I can, what they might say, and how I can act and react so they won’t hate me by the end of it. It’s very all-consuming, at least in my experience with GAD (generalized anxiety disorder). That didn’t stop me from performing. In fact, I think it pushed me to perform. I did theatre, I did show choir, and I auditioned for big roles and solos, and sometimes even got them. As someone with anxiety, severe anxiety at that, I had never feel more unburdened or clear headed than when I was performing my blocking and singing my lines. It’s okay to have opinions. Him hating Bocchi doesn’t bother me. But him saying “anxiety isn’t like that” is so fucking beyond the pale. Like, it quite literally is exactly like that.

I like K-ON because of the vibes and believe it or not, there is meaning and plot progression that’s hidden behind the cute anime girl facade. I like Bocchi because, well, it’s relatable. But the story also does have a progression, which is her having extreme social anxiety while trying to figure out how to make friends and not feel like she’ll turn into a failure to society. She combats this by playing guitar and forming a band with friends she made through other people with the same interests. How the characters interact with each other and how they go about playing in a band are a completely different way than how K-ON did it, they’re basically the opposite story wise! I’m trying so hard because Joey used to be the man I could turn to for anime advice, yes, more than Garnt. It’s cool if he didn’t wanted to talk about anime or anything anime related on his main channel or on trash taste (and honestly I’m all for it now, he definitely stopped caring). Just finished watching bocchi and one thing that i love about her, regardless how meek and chronically awkward she is, she obviously has a desire (like wanting to be rich, to be famous, to have fans) like she's not emotionally inept to imagine herself in a position where she lives in prosperity and pleasure. Her problem is she's too scared to make the first move, always being passive, but after she joined Kessoku, she began to realize her dreams and started to take initiative and i think that's wonderful. Also, calling bocchi a k-on clone is so wrong it's actually insulting.

I haven't watched Bocchi the Rock (though I plan to, it sounds like it'd be up my alley), but I had a similar reaction when they talked about an anime I really like simply bc it was in the male idol genre. People are entitled to their own opinons, and I get not everything is going to be for everybody. But I'm tired of seeing series I like get shat on or considered not as good JUST because of its genre.
@EyesDontCry4 ай бұрын
There's 2 things that can happen, someone can have just a different opinion and while you obviously disagree, that's fine. But then sometimes people completely misrepresent a show based on a skewed perspective. For example I think joey saying the music is bad is fine, I disagree but sure if he didn't like it whatever, but then saying stuff like "there's no plot progression" is just blatantly false as someone who watched the show, the entire point is that bocchi (her name literally means alone) is really good at guitar already but she's got crippling social anxiety. And we aren't talking cute anime social anxiety where they are just shy, she has straight up spasms when confronted with the idea of social interaction. It's not really a spoiler, but yeah she improves and gets the courage to perform in her own way due to the help of her new found friends and band mates who encourage her and improve their skills at the same time. This is literally plot progression, whether you like the plot is another story but you can't just say her making friends isn't plot progression when her entire character is being a complete loner lacking in social skills, and that friendship leads her to develop as a character too. To reiterate, there's nothing wrong with a difference of opinion, but that opinion should be based on what's true and if it's based on something that's false, it's fair to say that opinion is faulty and should be altered based on the facts of the matter.

Ok his opinion on everything about BTR aside, I CANT BRING MYSELF TO BELIEVE THAT no one has yet to talk about the directing of the series. The storyboarding, the animation, the layout and the film language(best imo), just the production in general was superb. And the way they deliver the humour in a more appealing way really shows that the director understood the audience very well, especially when humours are significantly getting more subjective in this MEME era, whereas jokes and gags can be considered as very common, corny and reptitive. So the delivery of the joke is really important and BTR did it well. As an animator myself, BTR was a much needed anime adaptation because the production itself is very refreshing to see. Sure he can have his opinion its no big deal. He cant relate to people who has social anxiety like Bocchi, ok sure. But whats baffling is the fact that every criticism he stated are all so contradicting. Its almost as if he hates the show without a valid reason, or is it because BTR is too mainstream?
