Honestly I feel like the animation really amplified the uncanny valley feeling the series is supposed to make you feel. You're supposed to feel scared and uncomfortable, which the animation does incredibly well. If this was animated in the traditional anime style it wouldn't have hit the same way imo. The animation is straight up the best part of this series, it gave the show such a unique feel to it which was a design choice that was sadly probably way ahead of its time.

Rotoscoping doesn't have to look like this though, for anyone wondering, the effect is one hundred percent intentional. Try watching some of the old animations like Fire and Ice, beautifully made like this anime, but none of the anxious feeling, because it didn't intend it to have it. Rotoscoping is just like any other way to animate, just a medium that artists can manipulate to get their results, and it's awesome.

Rotoscoping is such an underappreciated animation form for today in my opinion. We owe a lot to it for revolutionizing animation to what it is today. Snow White used rotoscoping animation, and that was one of, if not, THE most influential animated works of all times. Its why movies like the Ralph Bakshi Lord of th Rings have stuck in my mind even after 20 years when I first saw it as a kid; something about it sticks with you. Shūzō Oshimi writes a lot from personal experience -- which is obvious when you read his afterwards to each edition of his work. His stuff, as weird and twisted as it is, is meant to be relatable on some level. People are so used to a superficial online world where everyone fakes their relatability that they feign this exaggerated shocked, or "how could someone do that" response when a person has an honest emotion, does something impulsive, or simply admits to having a problem ( unless that problem is the problem of the moment that everyone suddenly has because it gets them likes and views ).

I think the artstyle is what most people complain about (from what I've heard), but I actually think it's pretty unique and cool. What is not cool, however, is the MC. Bro is actually the most stupid character out of any piece of media I've consumed. Dude was with the girl he liked and didn't have psycho girl's threats looming over him anymore after he confessed, and yet he still ran back to that torment. Maybe it's supposed to be deep, but to me I think he deserved whatever dark ending awaited him. Honestly though, I had forgotten about the walking scene. If you ignore the fact that his situation is stupid and completely avoidable, that scene really hit hard.

The one most important thing that can make an anime creepy for me will always be the animation. The unsettling and uncanny vibe you get the first time you lay your eyes upon a show that can really make you go, “Well, shit- I'm not watching this it's too scary” (yet still continuing to do so anyways, because you know you'll be in for a ride). Which is why this caught my interest and I might consider watching this if I want to experience horror again. Sadly, plenty ‘creepy’ or ‘scary’ shows and animes forget that nowadays and try too hard to be scary to the point it just isn't even close to being one💀 In my honest opinion, ‘scary’ is what the eye first perceives rather than what the ear hears (if that's even making any sense lmao).
@Gingabread-bw6xjАй бұрын
I watched this when it came out and I don’t think this was supposed to be scary at all lol. I think people misunderstood why it’s so slow paced or why the MC is “dumb”. They forget that this is about teenagers, doing dumb shit (as teens do) and how it feels like everything is such a big deal. Like yeah, he could have fixed the situation early on, but he’s a teen, with amplified feelings on top of feeling alienated. It made people uncomfortable that it’s reflecting real life emotions and had rotoscoping. Was this even classified as a horror at the time? I remember it being slice of life 😂, just a different flavour than what we typically see. But then again, most of what I saw was (in my opinion) unfair criticism. It’s one thing to say they didn’t like the art style or story overall, quite another to dismiss the themes and say it’s boring. I’m glad to see it finally found and audience though.

The rotoscoping was a super cool and risky animation choice for a story that was supposed to be about bottled up dark feelings, corruption, everything turning to complete fucking chaos. It’s about a very “human” and uncomfortable topic. And not a fun one. I think it worked so well, but it was also made in a time when anime and especially artistic shows were not respected internationally. They used some controversial choices for the OP as well using the vocalist from Midori who is crazy and experimental, and noko from shinsei kamattechan who is also considered to be a bold choice (and people finally started to like his music when iseyama used him for the AoT op/end.. big anime can pull this off)

This kinda reminds me of Kuuchu Buranko with the animation (often they have full on anime scenes, half anime half realistic like this Anime or fully human) also the girl genuinely creeped me out at the start. I just watched two seconds and it's already creeping me out so I won't keep watching the video, but I hope she didn't rape him and that she does get the punishment she deserves for her actions. Of course I don't know what she does or doesn't do, but it's obvious she's a creep that most likely deserve jail. Edit: I see some people, content creator himself blaming the victim and that's messed up. The comments had a summary of the general video and I have to say this: I feel like even if he "wanted it" he didn't deserve it. For whatever reason all of this happened, if it was a woman with the same identical mentality of the male MC you wouldn't say she deserved the outcome. Going by the description given he had most likely some issue psychologically speaking that wanted him to receive that outcome. Saying he deserved it to a victim, even if they "wanted it" is messed up. It doesn't take a lot to understand whatever his reason is, it's all psychological. It's like saying an abused partner is asking for it because they don't leave/when they leave they come back. It's not easy. This is what is happening to the MC. He might be dumb but he didn't ask for this just because he self sabotaged his chance to have a normal life. It's obviously psychological related and saying he wanted or asked for it when he clearly have issues that needed to be addressed is messed up and insensitive. This Manga/Anime from what I understand is psychological, meaning he DOES NOT want this. He's a victim. It's easy to call him dumb or say he deserved it when you aren't the one going through the psychological issue yourself. I am studying in psychology and for how dumb the MC might be this is still a victim, he's not doing it for fun. NO ONE goes to a toxic person for fun. It's because they need help and it's not easy to escape that alone.

Read the manga. Shūzō Oshimi writes complex characters, and adapting a story like that is difficult because in the manga we know what a character is thinking, or at least the protagonist. People judging a character in a film where the actions they take don't make logical sense, are only making judgments on what is presented to them.

For a reason I couldn't understand, even knowing I was at the lowest point in my life when I first watched the anime, I found this show to be oddly therapeutic, why though? I always tend to think of the reason due to it being since for nostalgic reasons, but even so, why did I start to rewatch it from time to time? Was it chance that brought me here? as time went on, despite not relating to the actions that occurred in the show, I actually empathised and related to THAT psychological distress the main character went through and into, the depression, the hopelessness, to the distraught, until I actually figured out that those feelings he was experiencing, so too was I. It was a sudden GIFT, feeling the loneliness realising that how depressed I was, to then oddly finding comfort to that loneliness when watching the show. It really comforted me to that new unusual, complicated emotions I was going through. Then add to all this comfort, I remember those lonely, empty scenes being played with a instrumental, knowing that weird atmosphere constantly being showed to me on the screen in front of my eyes, listening to the OST's, most loved being "Sabita Kumo", those scenes played, added a layer of bliss to that hindering emotion I was feeling, almost as if it was, an elegant feel to it, such emotions hitting me left right, and centre, even if where those emotions become overwhelmingly intense; having that OST's being played eased me into figuring out what I should conclude from all of this, which there it was! it taught just that: the conclusion to make that journey, to arrive at that conclusion, for you to then conclude that end. This show has a special place in my heart because it exposed me to confront that emotion which I thought wasn't confrontational at all, thinking it was endless continuation of misery, but I chose to conclude that journey and begin anew.

this show became one of my favs right away when i finally watched it a month or so ago, its been living in my head since. the same night i finished it i binged the manga to see the ending. this story overall left me feeling a void, its absolutely not for everyone but its something thatll stick with me for a very long time if not forever. glad to see someone shining light on it

i am so happy someone talked about this show i thought it was a fever dream. I watched the anime first and i actually couldnt go through the manga because it just didnt feel the same and didnt have that uneasiness to it

Rodoscope/rotoscope (whatever) killed this anime, but it makes it even more unsettling. Absolutely love it and the manga

@mrs.surstarwberry2247 in high school kasuga meets a girl who's a writer and she helps him heal and fall in love with literature again. They end up looking for Nakamura who is living with her aunt and she's doing much better, then they play together in the water at the beach. The last chapter shows nakamura's point of view meeting Kasuga. Everyone is blurry until she sees him be weird with the clothes, where she can finally view him clearly because it's the first time she relates to someone.

LOVED THIS ONE because it was so offputting. I read the manga and loved it because it was one of those downward spiral, enlarging snowball stories.. unrealistic behavior depicted in a way that really rings true. The anime i liked even more because of the rotoscoping and creepy music. I only wish it had a season 2 😢

I read the manga way back but never watched the show. As a casual cinematography dork I can agree with everything you said, the direction of all the shots I've seen so far are a master class in capturing the nauseating mundane horror vibe of the story. It's really an uncomfortable read, it takes growing up and makes it scary. Like you feel all the anxiety and discomfort of adolescence condensed into a rollercoaster ride of sexual deviance and abuse and twisting it almost into a love story. It actually kinda reminds me of my favorite parts of the book Until They Bring The Streetcars Back that I had to read back in high school, which is wild because that's set in Saint Paul, Minnesota in 1949. I don't know, maybe that says something about the universal human experience but you'd need a smarter guy than me to really put it into words. They shoulda let that author cook, that book could've been pretty rad if it wasn't written to be appropriate for high school English classes but I'll stop rambling.

That fucking “HI SISTERS” literally jumpscared the shit outta me & I never get jumpscared bro😭But this anime really intrigues me, it’s so weird & reminds me of a messed up music video I saw when I was a kid, but it also had a message, like this show does. I’d be interested to watch this.

Sometimes I feel like the only person alive who actually likes the way rotoscoping looks. A Scanner Darkly used this technique as well and I loved that movie too I know I not the only one but I rarely interact with people who appreciate it too

To me this is the most well executed psychological horror in anime, especially due to artistic choices they made. At first it's off putting, of course, even when other anime use rotoscoping (Monogatari series, for example) - it's not as in your face noticeable, as in Aku no Hana. But once you are one episode in, it's no longer that distracting, imo. Most painful thing in this anime is not the cringe of main character's life falling apart, but the fact, that this anime adaptation never been continued, despite season 2 being worked on (according to the teaser at the end of anime). And man it hurts
@jeremybiggs8413Ай бұрын
Aku no Hana is a bonafide masterpiece of atmosphere. It’s criminal it wasn’t more appreciated when it aired. A rare, mature series in a sea of infantilised moe garbage. One of the best anime’s since the 1990’s boom.
@VTWSАй бұрын
The manga is designed to look gorgeous in every panel, and the anime does too but only after you get used to the exotic artstyle. I felt the anime was unwatchable back then but nowadays I find it beautiful. Might be just that I got older, too.

The fact that this is one of the few and I'm pretty sure only anime that uses rotoscoping is amazing. And it's absolutely fitting to sell just how uncomfortable the atmosphere is.

You telling me not to watch it makes me feel like this will be a Beau is Afraid situation, no satisfying end just left feeling like everything is pointless, even though the art was technically good

I am 3 episodes in because of this video. It is SO peak, the art style doesn't bother me at all. It is very intriguing, chilling and yet sometimes "relatable"? Thank you for informing me of this anime. Its really something different, something I have been yearning for, its a shame that there is no season 2.
